I had a good diet going and work out. I lost about 14 pounds a little bit over a month..and gained some good muscle, I had some heart problems and I cant workout again untill end of august..

I have now gained like 5 pounds and I dont want that 2 months of hardwork to go away.

Can I just keep a good diet and lose weight( and not too much muscle ) then add the lifting after summer.

I was eating around 1500 cals a day and tredmill 5 days a week..lifting 3 days a week. and losing good weight.

If I cant workout now, Should I just eat like 1000 cals a day..and I wont gain weight .

Can I lose fat this way then just Start lifting after summer ?

You can lose weight just by dieting. Since you have a good diet just adjust your calorie intake using the BMR formula above (sticky) and monitor.

1000cals is not a good idea. Actaully 1500cals was too low considering the excercise you were doing you could well be in starvation mode.

Good luck

Don't worry about it, it happens; just be sure use this as motivation.. now get back on the right track :tu: .

Yes but do not lower your calories too low because you will lose muscle if you adopt this tactic. Determine the correct amount of calories for you based on the formulas you can find in the "sticky's" at the top of the cutting/fatloss page. If you can't workout I recommend that you perform cardio only a few times a week as there is always a chance of muscle loss attributed to it.

As Canada said in the above post, 1500 calories was probably too low. How much of the weight you lost was fat/muscle? You say you have gained muscle but on this amount of calories i suspect you are confusing strength with muscle; in theory i believe it's possible you could have been losing muscle but gaining in strengh if you were new to lifting thereby suggesting muscle gains (i could be wrong though; I know that many can gain muscle while in a calorie deficit due to being new to weight training and/or being genetically gifted). To be sure next time get some body fat calipers (do a quick google search if you don't know what these are, or go to ebay).

NO, NO, NO. Eating a 1000 calories is a terrible idea. Sorry to sound harsh but you really need to learn a little more about nutrition and the affects od not eating enough (aswell as the difference between weight and fat). Starving yourself is the last thing you should do to lose fat; have you seen Lindsy Lohan recently? Sorry to sound like a jack@ss but i want to hammer the point home, GO READ THE "STICKY'S" i suggesested further up the page :tu: .

Yes, but keep your calories about 15% below your maintanance level to begin with so you aren't losing too much muscle, track your progress and adjust accordingly; you may have to slowly increase your calories until you get to this point because if you raise them to quickly you may store them as fat (upping them by about 100-200 a week should do it). Aim to lose about 1-2lbs a week only (unless you have a lot of fat to lose; a little more is sometimes acceptable), you'll be thankful in the long term. The body fat calipers you should buy can help you keep a close eye on whether or not you're losing fat/muscle; if you find you're losing a lot of muscle consisitantly then i suggest you start upping the calories slightly until this stops. If this tactic causes you to stop losing fat then up the amount of cardio you are doing. When the summer comes and you can commence lifting again, re-calculate the amount of calories you should consume using the same formulas.

You can continue to lose fat or just maintain. Eat clean and sensibly, and play sports or do cardio. Just don't drop calories too low to minimize muscle loss as much as possible. Why can't you lift right now?

Reread your post. What exactly do you mean by heart problems? All exercise is a no-go? That's not usually what they tell heart patients. What's your diet like?

If you can do cardio, then cardio + more calories is musch better than lower calories. Even though your net calories will be low, you are more likely to burn fat while retaining muscle.

I'm injured right now, and can't lift, so I'm going through a similar experience. A decent amount of protein and regular meals are an absolute must. As few cheats as possible - no regular scheduled ones. Unfortunately muscle loss is inevitable, but you can get back to where you were reasonably quickly and not loose too much buy taking the fat loss slowly and making sure your diet is wired.

I forgot EFA's - more vital than usual, as are other fats, drop some carbs in favor of good fats and protein if necessary.

Curious. Your doctor say no weight lifting? I can understand no heavy weights, but I would be shocked and no weights at all.

How about basics like pushups, situp, jumping jacks?

Here is the huge problem with a diet only weight loss solution.

It's freaking doomed to failure. Period. Pure basic math and biology. I promise you will gain it back in no time.

Why? Simple. When you lose weight, you are losing a combination of muscle and fat and glycogen. Your body uses all of them for fuel all th time. Depending on your activity depends on what percentage of each its burning.

You lose 20 lbs. Between 30-50% of that will be muscle. For every lb of muscle you have you burn between 20-55 calories burning capacity. Fat doesn't burn any calories.

So you have no lost an additional 200-550 calorie burning just to MAINTAIN.

Well you had a 500 calorie deficit to lose the weight, now that same deficit will only maintain your diet. You wont lose a lb more. Go to a maintenance phase, and you start gaining it back.

That is why most peoples diets fail. They lose their capacity to burn calories through their muscle lost.

THanks for all of the help guys. to clear up the detail on my heart..A simple cold virus I had , went straight to my heart..The middle of my heart is imflammed and I am taking penacillin shots for 5 years to be safe. Since my heart is kinda damaged the docs said no lifting/sports for 3 months to make sure i dont damage my heart more.

I've now went back to my diet but changed it a little to add some to it.

thanks
