View Full Version : Are my calories too low?
Maya Fri, July 1st, 2005, 04:37 PM I started working out beginning of April.
Here is my schedule:
Mon- weights 1hr. (chest, tri, shoulders, abs)
Tue- cardio (35 min, 3.5 m/hr, 8-10% incline) LISS
Wed- weights 1hr (back, bicep, abs) after that 35 min cardio like above
Thu- cardio (35 min)
Friday- weights 1 hr. legs, abs
Sat- off
Sun- off
So in total I do 3 x weights and 3 x cardio a week.
I'm female, 5'10 medium frame and work at a desk all day.....and according to FitDay I burn about 2000 cal a day (not including my workouts)
So including my workouts I burn about 2300 cal a day.
Since May I cut my calories to about 1500, before that I didnt see any weight loss, but I did see a difference in the shape of my body.
Is 1500 too low??
I Would like to retain as much muscle mass as I can. I like to look fit and cut, not skinny and scrawny
I would like get dow to about 18% bf. My upper body looks good, I still have to loose some fat from the problem areas like stomach (not nassasary a 6 pack but some definition) and legs (I dont see much definition there yet :(
I would appreciate your advice
PS. I work out pretty hard, 4 sets 10-15 reps till failure. Mostly free weights
For example I started squats with 45 lb, now I'm at 95 lb
bradh Fri, July 1st, 2005, 04:43 PM Looks pretty good to me. The general rule of thumb is cut 500 to 1000 cals but don't go under 1200cals for women. If you want to take it nice and steady might be a good idea to up it to 1800cals. Take measurments and adjust accordingly.

here is the only picture I have (at least you can see some of my stomach and arms)
I will try to take some picures

Agreed. From that pic your abs look really defined.
1FastGTX Fri, July 1st, 2005, 06:52 PM It looks like your routine is working for you. You will get LOTS of various opinions on this, but I personally am not a fan of cardio right after weights, or right before. It's just not my thing personally. Again, lots of opinions here; many people here are getting fantastic results doing the opposite from what I prefer. :)
Anyway my preference would be to either move the cardio to the morning (try to separate it from weightlifting by around 6-8 hours) if possible. Or, dare I say, remove cardio completely from weight-lifting days...I wouldn't want to do this, but you could move them to Saturday and Sunday.

I do combine cardio with weights once a week to squeeze my workouts in 5 days.
Also the wednesday workout was an easier one, with another trainer at the gym, only 30 min. But I feel like I cant do everything I want to in 30 min, so I end up finishing on my own and end up doing 45-50 minutes of weights anyway.
I might drop that wednesday cardio and do cardio twice a week, but 40-45 minutes.

Depends on your preferences I suppose. I'm in the "work out hard but not long" camp myself. I try to get out of the weight room within about 30 minutes, hitting like 2 (maybe 3) bodyparts, just a few sets but heavy and high in intensity.

That would be MY choice probably, might be more appealing than going to the gym 2 times a day (cardio AM, weights PM), that's for sure.
Keep us posted! :tucool:
