Don't confuse any other beverages with water. I don't include the water i use in my coffee or protein shake as part of my daily water intake. Alcohol will hinder your progress because it contains calories. Useless, non-nutritive calories. Moderate useage becomes problematic in many different aspects leading to possibly higher estrogen levels. Something guys should want to avoid.

I believe carbonation is also a diuretic. So, if you're drinking a soda, treat it like a dehydrator.
The FAA also suggests staying away from coffee, sodas and teas—otherwise called diuretic drinks. These beverages contain caffeine, alcohol and carbonation, which causes excess urine production or decreased voluntary fluid intake—a sure sign of dehydration.
From an interesting article on Pilot Dehydration (http://www.pilotfriend.com/flight_training/human%20factors/dehydration.htm). It showed up when I googled for carbonation and diuretic.

Carbonation is absolutely not a diuretic. And besides, caffeine is a mild one at that (when compared to pharmacutical diuretics).
Carbonation may prevent intake of more fluid, since your stomach may be filled with air, but it won't cause excessive urine production and secretion from the body.
Google is also a good way to find out answers too. Just be discerning of the source.
