Hey all. I just started using Whey protein after workouts this week and I seem to have trouble sleeping.

I have to scoops in skim milk right after I get home from they gym. I workout relatively late, starting at 8 or as late as 9-9:30 and finishing off as late as 10:15. So I drink the shake as late as 10:30 and go to bed aroun midnight. This has been a normal thing to me. But, since I have started using this supplement, I have had weird dreams, wake up it the middle of the night, can't get back to bed, etc. I know I'm excited about my new lifestyle. But, I have been lifting for the last 3 weeks and never had these problems.

Is this a normal thing? Is this more of an energy drink? Besides nutritional? Should I just drink the shake right before I workout?

Is it just me? lol. Whats your experience with the stuff.

FYI might not be the Whey. I switched from late evening workouts to early am because I found that my metabolism was too charged up from working out and could not get a good night's sleep (and this was before adding supplementation).

Don't forget you get energized after working out so it could quite possible be that. Whey protein is broken down by the body fairly quickly but it's metabolically expensive to do so. From what I've read a casein based protein (like cottage cheese) is a good choice right before sleep since it give you a slow intake of protein all night to your muscles.

If you have your whey (likely mixed with a high GI liquid to replensih glycogen) a couple of hours before bed, that's going to start the digestive process (which requires a lot of shunting of blood and internal energy). It takes a couple of hours to bust down protein. When you sleep, you're supposed to ramp down not up, so it's not a total surprise you may have a restless sleep. I'd say ride it out a little longer and see if your body adjusts to this routine (keep it routine and it just might). Things may settle down.

If not, you may have to make an adjustment.... like working out a little earlier. Or, flip the game plan like I did.

Good Luck
