View Full Version : Total Website Upgrade- comments please!
andi Tue, June 28th, 2005, 10:43 PM I just sent two days tweaking and adding photos to get my photo website looking slick- and I'd appreciate your comments and suggestions!

Please let me know if you find anything broken, misspelled, wonky, shonky, or just plain wrong. Also, let me know if you like the layout, colors, etc.
It's already been suggested that I sell photos- pretty soon I'll add a payal shopping cart so I can sell prints and cards, but it'll be a little ways off.
Thanks for any input you might have!

Caruthias Tue, June 28th, 2005, 11:01 PM Looks good! Here are a few things I noticed. I'm on a pretty small resolution - 19 inch monitor at 1280 by 1024, and I think some the things I noticed are because of that. However, that doesn't mean it shouldn't be fixed, especially if it's a professional site where you intend to sell your art/services/whatever.
See picture for what I'm referring to. Linked because it's huge.

1 Title is too small
2 Again, this stuff is too small
3 White on edges of orange graphic sticks out
4 I can barely read your name in the background - also, the photos in this graphic should look good as small as they are. The photo of the four guys in blue sitting down looks like it might be quite interesting full size, but as small as it is and with the lettering obscuring the guys sitting down, it just doesn't look as good.
5 All the white sticks out.
EDIT: Adding one more thing. Okay, you see where you have eight images below the orange ad thing? Two rows of four? The bottom one is off. Because there's one vertical photo and three horizontal ones, it's unbalanced to the right, where the vertical photo is. If it's a script that's calling up images that constantly change, then I guess there's not much you can do without completely reworking it though :d_frown:
andi Tue, June 28th, 2005, 11:19 PM Thanks for that! The graphics from dreamstime, istockphoto and shutterstock are generated by them- I can't change them. The antialiasing around the orange graphic obviously isn't that good, and the table around the dreamstime images is generated on their site- I can't change the table coding. The layout of the photos there is also generated by the agencies.
I had considered making everything larger, but there are still people that run at 800x600 (especially on laptops), so I had to pick a happy medium. As it says on the site, it's best viewed at 1024x768- it can't even be seen on the screen all at once at 800x600.
I was actually more concerned about how the galleries work, since that code is where I spent most of my time and effort ;)

Fly_Moe Wed, June 29th, 2005, 11:57 AM I'm about to go work out :D (since I work out during my "lunch time"). When I get back i'll add more stuff if I find it. But for some reason it took a VERY long time to load your home page. Once I started clicking through some of your photos, it was pretty fast. But when I tried going back to the home page, it took a long time again. I don't know if that's an issue to look into or not, but I thought it worth mentioning. It could be an issue with my connection, I dunno.
Anyway, just from my first impression of your site, everything looks good. I really like some of your photos. Good job!
PhillyGirl Wed, June 29th, 2005, 12:50 PM I am in love with the nature photos! Very beautiful.
It could be because I'm at work and it may be a connection issue, but it took a long time for the site to load. The buttons at the top of the picture, float. They are positioned on the picture, but when you go to click on them the buttons move up to the space where they are supposed to be. I'm in Home-->Main Galleries-->Nature

Hope this helps.
Edit- After I posted, I clicked on the link I copied above and the buttons are in the right place.

Andi,
what did you use to build it? Looks good...to me.
The font is getting washed from the graphics...i think one poster mentioned this.
On my pc size looks fine.
andi Wed, June 29th, 2005, 11:21 PM Yeah, not sure what's up with the slow loading- probably an issue with my webhost, it's still happening for me. And yes I noticed the jumping navigation icons, I don't think there's anything I can do about that. Thanks for your input! Glad you like the photos :)
Nate Wed, June 29th, 2005, 11:40 PM I'm running 800x600 and i've got pretty large scroll bars going on when I load the site.
As for the slow loading, it loaded very quickly for me.
The site itself and the content is quite good. :tucool:
andi Thu, June 30th, 2005, 12:36 AM Thanks Nate. Unfortunately the amount of effort that would be required to have it dynamically resize depending on resolution is more than I can put in at the moment. I've got people telling me its too big, others say it's too small. Maybe the next time I tear it all down again I'll start with dynamic sizing :D
Thanks guys!
Gila Monster Thu, June 30th, 2005, 03:14 AM Hi Andy, I liked the site (though I had only a breaf vewing), but I would like to comment on the collors. That dark grey is just too gloomy in my opinion, and that orange button emphasizes it. I don't know if that was the initial meaning, but if it wasn't I'd suggest to replace the dark grey background with some lighter shade and perhaps add some pinkish/blueish collors, perhaps in the letters.
Just my opinion, hope it helps. :)
Edit: Browsing through the nature pictures (very lovely) I noticed that the grey background emphasizes the colloring on the pictures, which is it's purpose I suppose, but that dark shade of grey still looks icky to me.
andi Thu, June 30th, 2005, 10:17 AM Thanks Gila. Unfortunately you can't make everyone happy all the time ;)
phillydude Thu, June 30th, 2005, 11:02 AM All looked good to me Andi... I just wish you lived closer so I could hire you to do some work for me... see my thread in the Media Gallery for my current dilemma.
andi Thu, June 30th, 2005, 11:16 AM Andi,
what did you use to build it?
The galleries were built using Coppermine Image Galleries, with the "kaki" theme, which I also applied to the rest of the site. The theme was originally greens, I changed it to grays to allow the photos to "do the talking."
John Stone Thu, June 30th, 2005, 11:28 AM I always enjoy looking at your work, Andi. You've added some impressive shots since my last visit. I love the new site design, too!
The first page also loaded slowly for me, but after that was quite speedy.

Thank you John! I appreciate the comments. I'm hitting the road tomorrow for a 3.5 week drive up and down the west coast, so I'll be adding many more photos in the days to come! :tu:

I'm in my hometown of San Diego at the moment, on our road trip around California. Yesterday we spent the day at the zoo, and I've just added a few animal photos to my Nature gallery. I'd appreciate any comments or ratings you'd care to leave! I sure wish there weren't cages to shoot through, but better that than to be mauled by a jaguar :)
Look for pics soon from Vegas (okay, not California but couldn't come west without hitting Vegas, baby!), Yosemite, and the coast. We're having a ball. Woot!
Solag Wed, July 6th, 2005, 02:13 PM Ohh wow! I really like how you got the leapards eye up close. I like the hippos as well. Your pics are awesome, can't wait to see some pics of the neon lights in Vegas!
Nate Wed, July 6th, 2005, 03:34 PM Great photos. I love the meerkat!
andi Wed, July 6th, 2005, 05:10 PM Thanks guys! And Nate, thanks for the comments in the gallery!
