Lately I've been drinking heaps and heaps of water (at least 5-6 litres a day), and I have broken out in a bad bout of acne, could this just be the water flushing the toxins out my body?

I've never heard of excess water causing breakouts. Are you taking creatine by any chance? If so, that always happens when I take it, maybe that's it.

Is it tap water? When I was in high school I drank tap water and had some pretty bad acne. Much of it cleared up after I stopped, mainly because testing concluded that our water was dangerous to drink. Too much sediment.

I am convinced squats cause acne. I know it sounds dumb, but when I began to squat more I got 3 pimples on my shoulder. I have barely had any on my face as a teen and never anywhere else on my body, then suddenly a shoulder breakout. It's happened a couple times since I began doing more squats -- has anyone else had this happen? It's more curiosity than a complaint...

the answer to your question regarding water consumption and acne are true. In High School when I had acne my dermatologist told me the best thing to do was drink water and that it would cause breakouts at first as my body was using the additional water to purge toxins. He said after a while it would stop after the toxins were out for the most part.

How long have you been drinking that much water and how long have you been breaking out?

I've suffered from persistent acne since my youth (I'm 40 now). Sometimes it is pretty bad, and an outbreak can appear very quickly indeed, often in several places at once.

I've never noticed a correlation with water, however. Acne, in any case, isn't caused by "toxins". Acne is caused by a sequence of events beginning with the body's response following over-secretion of sebum, and also involves a specific bacterium. I've never once heard of "toxins" playing any part in this.

The only things (other than powerful drug treatment that I had some years ago) that I've noticed have any influence on acne are:

1. Peanuts -- MAYBE lead to an outbreak.

2. Washing with very hot water -- USUALLY gives temporary relief to the itching and inflamation, and temporarily destroys or reduces some spots. I don't know if it makes any longterm difference, though, as they seem to come back anyway.

3. Friction or irritation -- if I have a shirt-collar or something that rubs against my neck, or if I rub my face too much with my hand (e.g. through nervousness, etc) inflamation and spots often follow.

I don't buy "toxins", though.

Don't know how severe your acne is, or if this drug is even still available, but I had it so bad as a kid they put me on a drug called Accutane. It has 6,392 side effects, including, as I learned recently, suicidal tendencies... but it got rid of my acne! :p I was a severe case, though, and it worked wonders for me. It just about cured my acne permanently and since taking it when I was 17, I have not had any issues with my skin.

they put me on a drug called Accutane.

I was on the same drug (which, in Britain, is called Roaccutaine). The list of possible side effects is long, but in Britain (and presumably elsewhere?) treatment with this drug is accompanied by strict medical supevision and blood tests.

It also worked well for me (although I still get acne sometimes, it is almost always very mild, and as nothing compared with how it was back then).

Incidentally, "suicidal tendencies" and depression must surely be very speculative things for the side effects list to include. In any case, acne is today understood to be a very important disease from a psychological point of view, and acne can cause depression and suicide itself.

Working out seems to help me a lot with acne. Though, I've tried two different types of pills, proactive, and a few other things and nothing works as good as Clearasil Vanishing Cream which contains benzoyl peroxide. If i put it on my whole face and leave it on over night, the acne will disappear after one to two days. But ever since I started working out more it has gone away. As for pimples on my back and such, tanning gets those as it makes my skin a bit drier which takes care of it.

I did accutane. It's a mess of a drug with hellacious side effects. It worked for a while but ultimately for me the only thing that really "cured" my acne was age. When I turned around 23 or so I started to notice that I wasn't a mess like I used to be. At 27 the most I've had in recent times is 3 decent face zits but normally the number is 1 and just as likely to be 0 as 2...I don't think about it any more.

The one thing that really brings out my zits is stress. If I notice a flare up I can even analyze to see what stress is in my life...and when the stress kicks in watch those zits come along! My wife can use it as a marker to see if I'm stressed :)

I get bad cyst-like zits on my shoulders when my workouts include squats, calf-raises, or anything else that involves the bar on my shoulders.

I figure that dirt, oil, detergent, etc. is been pushed / scrubbed deep into the pores underneath the weight of the bar.

Firstly quit with the excessive water amount. You could be poisioning your body with so much water!! the healthy amount to drink is between 2-3 liters of water!!!!!!

and yes, you are flushing your system and thus causing bad rubbish to surface (usually through the skin!). Dermalogica do an amazing gel called Medicated Clearing Gel its great for breakouts, spread a thin layer on your skin 2-3 times a day after cleaning, and you should see results within a week.

Its miracle stuff - i promise :claplow:

I've never heard of excessive water causing an increase in acne, but it makes sense. However, if you have insurance find yourself a dermatologist. There are infact six different types of acne. Each one requires a different treatment. I was given a mild antiboitic and has given me great results.
