does anyone here do cardio and weights on the same day?
I wanted to try something different so as soon as i get up i do cardio for 30 minutes, wait 15 minutes then start my weights. is this wrong?

If you are thinking of doing an intense weight training session with some decent weights then I beleive it would be more beneficial to do the weights first, followed by cardio so that you have enough energy to get through your weights workout. The thoery goes that in your weight workout you use up your glycogen stores and so that by the time you're into your cardio session you are burning fat.

I agree with this... if you are going to do both in the morning (or evening) you should lift first

an alternative would be to do your fasted cardio in the morning and then weights in the evening... this is what I do ;)

Do you do this every day? I've been alternating my cardio/weights, but really love the cardio feeling in the morning so I would love to do it daily but always heard it was a no-no.

I do weights and cardio three days a week and then cardio the other days, but I second everyone's advice to do the weights first if you're doing them in the same workout.

in the mornings, i weight train one body part, the workout lasts approx. 30 min. then i do cardio for 30 min. every day except sundays and i don't do cardio after my leg workout.
i get bored with my routines so i read somewhere that trish stratus does one body part per day. i've just started doing this so i can't comment on my results yet.

If I do cardio on a weight day, I have space between them. Meaning if I do cardio first thing in the AM, it is NEVER a HIIT session - it's usually a LISS - afterwards I will go eat something, let everything settle for a bit and then go hit the weights.

Ideally, I like to hit the weights at a completely different time from the cardio (like I will do one later in the day instead of both within the same time frame.)

almost... my schedule looks basically like this

a.m. cardio -- p.m. weights (legs), then more cardio
a.m. cardio -- p.m. weights (back/chest), then more cardio
a.m. cardio -- p.m. cardio
a.m. cardio -- p.m. weights (bi's/tri's), then more cardio
a.m. cardio -- p.m. weights (shoulders, abs & obliques), then more cardio
a.m. cardio -- p.m. cardio

you wouldn't need the extra cardio after weights though, I'm doing this to push fat loss along as fast as I can so I can compete this year.

I'm going to give this a try for the next week or so and see where it takes me...thanks! I'll be sure to report back.

if you do, make sure the cardio is LISS... I do mine mainly on the treadmill at a 20 minute mile (3.0 on our treadmills) and a 10% incline (works the back of your legs really well) ;)

I'm glad you mentioned that! I do HIIT now - how would that fit into my new plan? Only on cardio only days? What if I did away with the PM cardio on those days and made my morning cardio still HIIT?

Yes, I do cardio and weights on the same day. However, I do aerobic conditioning 80-85% MHR - usually running - after I lift weights. I save the HIIT for non-weight days, and for some of my evening training sessions.

a.m.- weights, then cardio p.m.- cardio
i do this everyday except on sunday (day of rest) and leg day.

what is "LISS"?

LISS is Low Intensity Steady State cardio. I prefer it over HIIT personally, but people can go either way. There was a whole thread discussion over HIIT versus LISS here:

http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showthread.php?t=15236&highlight=LISS

Some interesting opinions and information in there, but I personally believe it just comes down to whatever you prefer.

so, LISS is cardio for 45 min. at a light speed? and HIIT is more intensive for 4-20 min. doing intervals?

Not 4 mintues. You really shouldn't do it for less than 20 minutes. If you can't do intervals that long yet and want to do HIIT, mix in more low-intensity recovery pieces. But still go for 20 minutes.

Here is my schedule:

Mon- weights 1hr. (chest, tri, shoulders, abs)
Tue- cardio (35 min, 3.5 m/hr, 8-10% incline) LISS
Wed- weights 1hr (back, bicep, abs) after that 35 min cardio like above
Thu- cardio (35 min)
Friday- weights 1 hr. legs, abs
Sat- off
Sun- off

So in total I do 3 x weights and 3 x cardio a week.

Looks good to me. I think it's best to limit cardio to off-days. Cardio on training days should be avoided IMO unless weight loss has stopped and diet is in line such that calories should not be dropped any lower.

I once had a trainer advise me to do 12 mins of Cardio pre-lifting, to get the heart rate up (warm up), and then 12 mins of Cardio post-lifting for cool down.

anthony ellis says to do 5 minutes of cardio at 80%max-hr pre-lifting.
I have a friend who did his program, and he's looking great.

based on that evidence, i dont think it matters too much.
