View Full Version : Homemade Protein Bars, anyone?

Hi, everyone!

This should *probably* go in the recipe section of the forum, but as of yet, no one else is posting there, and since I've only a question (not an actual recipe) I'll post it here instead. If anyone comes up with a good recipe, we can then post it in its proper forum.

My question is: Does anyone have a good recipe for homemade protein bars? I see recipes all over the net, but they all contain oatmeal, natural peanut butter, protein powder, and honey. The first three ingredients are just fine, but adding enough honey (read: liquid sugar) to make the whoe thing stick together just turns the protein bar into a carb disaster. I think I'd almost be better off eating a Snickers bar.

Anybody know some low carb, or even *reasonable* carb alternatives to these honey-based recipes? I should point out that I'm not on a low carb diet or anything, its just that I don't think these honey-based protein bars are all that healthy.

Thanks in advance!

-Dan

i made some a while back.

all you need is:

oatmeal
natural peanut butter
whey protein

thats it..

i saw a recipe that added skim milk powder.. but im sure the oatmeal/peanut butter will help hold it together.. and this bar was to be put in the fridge to cool.. not baked, i may try baking it with this for a bit.. might become more hard and less brittle

Any idea how to combine the ingredients? I'd end up with a gooey glob of oatmeal with whey in it.

put it in a pan and spread it out.. and shape it into like a huge rectangle..

OH! and you have to mix with water! but it doesnt need much water, slowly add water and stir it alot.. till you get the goo factor you want

That would make quite a few bars. I think I'll get a margarine tray and try it with that some time. Until I see how it turns out, there's not much of a point in making a ton of them.

Do these need to be refrigerated? What type of protein powder should be used, whey or something else? Will any type of whey protein work?
