View Full Version : Which is better?
fcompton Tue, June 14th, 2005, 10:57 PM Due to a reduced caloric input fpr the last two days, I found that I had to drop my bench press weight by 20 lbs. Being so, which is better on those days?
1) keep the weight and sets and drop the reps or..

Thats strange, 2 days shouldn't have an effect on your strength, maybe your energy levels.
Sure you weren't just having an off day?

Yes, if you can stay with same weight is better.
Banditfist Wed, June 15th, 2005, 08:27 AM Increase the weight and stopping thinking about it. Sounds more like a mental block that you are having than physical.
Reno_1ted Wed, June 15th, 2005, 08:45 AM You wont have lost strength in 2 days. Only lower energy as previously stated.
Drop the reps, and then build back up to where you were.

That said, I'd go for a middle ground. I'm mostly stubborn and don't like to drop weights. As long as I've been consistently training I will generally just watch my reps lower a bit and keep the weight close to the same. However, if I was previously strong and going with a heavy weight and low reps--let's say I did 4 reps on something, balls out, then there's no point in doing only 2, so in such a case I'd have to lower the weight to bring reps back up.

Yeah-this surprises me a lot too. I'm thinking an off day. But for an extended cut, I think that heavy weights in lower rep ranges (at least as one component of training) are best for maintaining strength and size. Drop the sets if you need too. Excessive volume while cutting can be too taxing.

Thanks for the advise. If it happens again, I'll keep the weight and drop the reps.
