View Full Version : a reminder on cardio
mereduke Fri, June 10th, 2005, 01:47 AM I know cardio is third on the list on weight loss effectivenss, but don't forget the cardiovascular benefits of it. Don't slack on getting the ticker pumping because without it we are screwed. I don't rely on my cardio routines to drop the pounds off, but I feel better physically and mentally afterwards, and it's benefits for long term health should not be forgotten. Just want us all to live long happy lives!! :tu:

No kidding, it seems like a lot of people think cardio is only useful to burn fat, which isn't true at all. Don't avoid it because you don't like it, it has too many benefits.
mereduke Fri, June 10th, 2005, 12:26 PM Too bad am I vegetarian or I would try this. I love morningstart black bean and soy burgers on two pieces of whole wheat bread with cottage cheese instead of mayo, must, etc. :tu:

mastover Fri, June 10th, 2005, 01:05 PM I don't believe in cardio for fat loss or cardiovascular conditioning. If you are carrying a ton of bodyfat, cardio will then kick start the fat burning process, but you will lose some muscle as well. People abuse cardio and don't put much effort into resistance training. Unless you're an athlete who needs extra conditioning to excel in your chosen sport, the diet will do a far better job of burning the fat while preserving all the muscle necessary to keep your metabolism racing.
Cardiovascular conditioning?Try 4-6 sets of hard and heavy squats followed by 3-5 sets of clean and presses or Romanian deadlifts, you'll be huffing and puffing like you just finished running a marathon. Now that's what I call constructive "cardio".

Of course. Proper weight training is cardio. But foolish to think that muscle can't be maintained with wind sprints, intervals, or some moderate intensity cardio if weight training and diet is in line. People at all levels do it all the time. But you're probably not saying that. You seem to be just talking about ineffective weight-training and over-reliance on cardio for fat loss.
