So today after a 50 min session of good cardio, I noticed a little warmth sensation in my left knee and its still there hours later. My knee doesnt look swollen and its not painful or anything just more or less annoying. Any one else experienced this after cardio? (cardio consists of the elliptical trainer)

I have a bad knee from high school wrestling many years ago that is recently flaring up a bit. I have found that the elliptical trainers are too hard on my knees because your knees are constantly bent and flexing while on an elliptical machine. This is the whole reason I prefer the treadmill on an incline for my cardio - I find it causes little to no stress on the knee. Though the treadmill is not conducive to HIIT if that's the form of cardio you choose to utilize.

Another alternative is an over-the-counter knee brace to support the knee while doing your cardio. Even just an ace bandage wrap to help support the soft tissue in your knee may help. You should also ice the knee down following cardio to aid in recovery.

If it's anything more than a very mild nagging pain, you may want to consult a doctor. Knees are not a joint to take lightly as their health is paramount to your ability to continue your journey to physical fitness. Please do not neglect them! The price you'll pay is far worse than backing off at the gym for a while or the inconvenience of seeing your doctor. I can't stress enough lately how important joint health is...

I appreciate the info. I just started feeling this right after my session yesterday at about 1pm. its 8:00am now and it feels a little better. I dont have any previous knee injury at all, so I know that its not a reaggravation. Unfortunately the Gym at my school (Sam Houston State University) does not have a single treadmill in there! :( So thats pretty much out of the question.

I'm going to ice it once I get out of class and if the problem persists I'll take it real easy on the cardio today, if it worsens afterwards, I just might quit the cardio for a couple days until I feel better. Thanks again for the info.

You can try glucosamine (1500 mg/day) w/ chondroitin. A lot of people are using this and it's supposed to do wonders for the knee. I've been taking it myself for two months and my recent fairly large amount of running has impacted my knee much less than ever before. It's so hard to say if that's the reason, or because I'm lighter or whatever, but it's worth a shot. A month supply from walmart costs $10-15.

Agreed. This is a very good supplement and has alleviated many of my joint woes. I'm taking it religiously now, 750-mg's twice a day, and my joints are less achy than they have been in many years. I'm sure the weight loss has some bearing on that, but my joints creaked a great deal after I'd lost weight. Glucosamine has made a difference for me. I buy bulk sized bottles from the local health food store, and the large bottle will last my wife and I about two months for around $30 a bottle. You can find it a little cheaper on line, but by the time you factor in shipping, the cost of buying it locally is about the same.

Glucosamine chondroiton is a great supplement. But what were you doing for cardio previously? If the answer is nothing, you shouldn't jump in by going for 50 minutes. Ease into it. Start with shorter cardio sessions. I know you said you wanted to 6 days a week in your previous post, but less frequent to would be beneficial until you start getting used to it.

I was doing 30-40 min sessions 3-4 days a week.. now I just upped it to 50 mins, with not as near intensity as 3-4 days a week.. I'm not a beginner so to speak as I've been doing cardio session several times before the summer.. :D

Update: currently icing my knee with a wrap and ice pack. hopefully it will feel really good when i hit the gym..

Not such a jump, then. Well, things just sometimes flare up. Pay attention to it. Ice, elevate. Don't overdo it. Feel better.

If i were you dude coming for someone who has a messed up knee i would be VERY cautious. If it acts up next workout don't do anthing for a week besides wieght training.

YEAh hes right, what i did when my sjhins acted up , was to lower the intensity of your work out and cut how many time u do it in a week in half, then slowly build bck up, then my friend your knees will be stronger.

goodluck

I'm not too keen on excessive running either.
I dont know how the marathon runners and such fare later in life, but my friend did cross country in highschool plus wrestling and his knees still give him trouble years later.
Supplements would probably help though.

Ditto on the ellipticals--- I hate those things.

My knees started to ache after about a week of running 3 days a week on a treadmill, for about a month's time. Once I cut back to 2 days it felt much better. Cant say if it would have gotten better or not since I didnt stick with it long enough.
