View Full Version : Body Types -> Genetics
reanimated838uk Wed, June 8th, 2005, 07:22 AM Is the body type you have all down to inherited genes from your parents?
I would have thought any sons/daughters would be of one body type. But in my family, its not the case. My oldest brother is on the endomorph scale, im on the meso-scale, and my second youngest brother is a ectomorph.
wh0rume Wed, June 8th, 2005, 08:00 AM i'm no scientist, but i think bodytypes are just like haircolor or noses.
sometimes you can have your mother's features, sometimes your father's.
my brother is a pure meso - he's ripped (muscular, small frame, low bf%) and he eats potatoe chips and drinks mountain dew all day. but if he starts lifting, his muscles grow almost instantly. gets it from my dad.
me on the other hand - im a small framed endo. i have small wrists, but if i eat a cookie, i gain 10 lbs. i get it from my mother.
Cziffra Wed, June 8th, 2005, 08:27 AM Your body type I believe is genetic. But I don't think it comes straight from your parents. It might come from further generations: grands, greatgreat parents (is that the name in english?), some ecto bloke from the end of the XV century... But it's written in your genes.
That said, regardless your body type, you can get cut as hell.
In my case, for example, my father is an endo, my mother I don't know, because I never got to know her for long enough, my grands are all endos, everything is endo in my family.
But not me. I'm not endo. I'm an ultraendo. I'd be happy to be a plain endo. :(
reanimated838uk Wed, June 8th, 2005, 08:31 AM Is there such a thing as a small framed endo?? I thought endos had large frames to them...
Its hard to tell what my folks bodytypes are (past photos would suggest that dad is ecto/meso and mum is a bit of ecto/meso/endo). If anything, i think i get my type from my mum, and my second youngest bro from my dad.

I would have thought you and wh0 are both ectos.
wh0rume Wed, June 8th, 2005, 09:02 AM yes, there are small framed endos. trust me - i'm a perfect example.
frame size doesnt determine what type you are, even though it will in most cases.
Cziffra Wed, June 8th, 2005, 09:04 AM I would have thought you and wh0 are both ectos.
Nop. Not me. ectos are hard gainers. They eat all the crap in the world and still manage to lose 2 lbs. a week. They have very tough bulks. Ask Anthony Ellis. On the other hand, I can put on fat by just thinking. So I'm a ultraendo. I can overlap my fingers around my wrist, so , yeah, I'm a small frame endo.
My bulks should be easy, though, although I never tried to bulk. I did it, over the last couple of months, I've gained 10 lbs and I'm back to ~13% as before, but that bulk was not planned. Just fell off wagon.
rockenmama Wed, June 8th, 2005, 11:12 AM Well mine certainly didn't come from my mother, father or siblings ( at least that I can tell). As for my own children, I believe I passed on my body type to one of my 4 son's, and my strength to my dd.

Skoorb Wed, June 8th, 2005, 12:01 PM My two brothers have the same build as I do, though our heights vary from 5,9 to about 6,1. We all have skinny legs (thanks, mom) with a propensity to weight gain (thanks, dad and mom!). My dad has cannonballs for calves (and it's not only from carrying around weight).
I've overcome this appearance with weights, but my calves are still a total joke. However, my brothers who don't workout look much worse :D
I'm hoping skoorbaby inherits more from her mother.
jsbrook Wed, June 8th, 2005, 03:05 PM That's her in the avatar? She's adorable!

Andrew Wed, June 8th, 2005, 07:56 PM Is there such a thing as a small framed endo?? I thought endos had large frames to them...
You wouldn't think so, but then what would you classify him as? I think that the way the body reacts to things is inherited genetically, but not every child from the same parents gets exactly the same genes, similar to other traits like hair color. I think that the current system of classifying everyone into one of 3 body types is far too simplistic, and people can easily be mislabeled. For example, say a person is born, and with a "normal" diet and lifestyle would have been considered an "ectomorph", whatever that means. But, say that person chooses to eat 5,000 calories a day at McDonald's (extreme, but possible). This person, who normally would have a tendency to be small and skinny, and would have a hard time gaining muscle, is now a 400 lb. morbidly obese person, who will certainly be classified as an endomorph, which is the opposite side of the spectrum from where they should be looking at their genes.
P.S. - I know this is extreme, but think of how many people have trouble deciding which body type they have. Many people just decide they are a "combination", and then go further by saying they might even have characteristics of the third body type. I sure don't know what body type I have.

Exactly. And it really doesn't matter. People would quite succesfully figure out the right amount of calories to meet their goals (fat loss or muscle gain) and an effective training program if no one had ever fashioned these categories.
don_1987 Wed, June 8th, 2005, 08:57 PM If I were to categozied myself, I would categorize myself as an ecto-endo! Weird combination huh :lol: I don't really know, because I'm fairly thin, but I can gain weight if I wanted to and even though I'm thin, I still store some amount of fat in the abdomen and it was there as long as I can remember :o Anyway, I agree with Jsbrook;

By making these cateories, it's as if people were doom just because they are endo, which shouldn't be the case if they knew how to eat and exercise correctly :tu:
