I would just like to lose fat & tone up. Good point. Not about the scale numbers. I'm so glad you recognize that while you're still young. Keep that perspective! Generally speaking, diet is the biggest key to losing fat. Diet, not exercise. However, since you are still a teenager, I would not want to guess what your body needs nutritionally. I don't know -- I'm not a nutritionist or any sort of medical person at all. If we're not going to play around with the diet much, then to lose fat, we need to raise the metabolism. Metabolism refers to the amount of calories you burn just by being alive. Some people burn lots, some burn a little even at the same weight and activity level. Let's raise your metabolism. How? The easiest and best way to raise your metabolism is through weight training. Stronger, bigger muscles will burn more calories just by existing. Think of your fat as a huge pile of firewood. Your metabolism is a small fire in a fire pit outside in the back yard. If you build stronger muscles, you are making making that fire pit bigger, meaning that you can burn more wood at a time 24-hours a day. That will help you reduce your wood pile quickly. Cardio is like putting an extra log on the fire for 30 minutes. It will help, but very slowly, and only while you are actually doing the exercise. Some girls are concerned about weight lifting. They are afraid to get "bulky" or look like a body builder, they don't want to be "angular." Believe me -- that is very, very, very hard to do. Muscles are very dense. Many people dedicate their lives to body building, they use steroids and still have a hard time looking bulky. You can ask the women on this forum -- look at their pictures, see their programs. You won't get bulky, I promise. Weight lifting can only help. No gym access? You can do pushups, pullups, crunches, squats, lunges, etc. Lots of options. Just do a search. Cardio -- do it! Excellent for your health, and burns some calories, too. I love to run. You might look into running a 5k road race. That was very motivational for me when I was your age. Lots of fun to train for a race -- and you feel like an olympic runner when you pin your numbers on your shirt. Welcome to the forums. Glad you're here. Hope this helps.
