I really don' t know how to tell if I' m working hard enough when cycling. What indicator should I be using and how much:
1. speed?
2. calories burned? (usually 300 per session)
3. heart rate? (don't know how to tell what it is though)
Gotta do it everyday for 20-30 min.

How do you feel after 20-30 minutes?
IF you're doing a light work out, you should feel like you could go more.
If you feel like you're going to puke, you probably worked it too hard.
If you feel in between, that's probably a really good workout.
It's all about how you feel. Speed, intensity, "calories burned" (it's never really an accurate measure), are all somewhat relative terms. Heart rate, though, is a pretty good indicator.
To tell your HR, get an HR monitor. Putting your hands on the HR monitors on the bike only give rough estimates.

The calorie counters on those machiens are very inaccurate.
I like to use the talking/singing barometer.
Can you sing while you are cardio? Not hard enough.
Can you keep a good long conversation with your friend? Still not.
Can you talk in sentences but not quite conversation? Pretty good.
Having a hard time talking? That's high intensity.
