View Full Version : stop the chocolate obssession part deux
supermanwannabe May 22nd, 2005, 05:18 PM I realized I was too late to join the earlier challenge so I propose a new chocolate-dump challenge; however, I propose it goes for three months from June 1st until September 1st with updates on everyone's progress at least once a week to keep us responsible to each other.
This sounds a little insane to me but I figuare after three weeks of abstinence we should be fine.

supermanwannabe May 23rd, 2005, 04:09 PM Great! Just to inform you and anyone else who joins I consider chocolate to be candy bars, ice cream, cakes, etc. and will let chocolate-flavored whey and the occasional chocolate chips found in my clif builder bars slide. This is just my personal preference and will aid me to overcome. To each his own but whatever each person plans, let us know so we can hold you responsible!
To replace chocolate I was planning on having fruit smoothies and the ocassional low-fat vanilla as the cravings for those flavors is minimal but satisfactory. One day down, around 100 to go.
Gila Monster May 24th, 2005, 02:06 AM To me chocolate is anything that contains chocolate - as you said - bars, candy, icecream... The whole lot.
If I used the whey supliment I'd probably be banning the chocolate flavor too! :D
I will try not to replace chocolate with anything, because my goal is to end this addiction and not replace it (as stated by one forum member).
However should I feel that the cravings are killing me I'll try to eat 1-2 energy bars instead. That or Verters candy
'Nuff said, good luck to all!
Gila.
supermanwannabe May 24th, 2005, 02:01 PM I'm feeling good today. No real cravings. It'll just take time to get the sugar cravings to go. Yeah, I"m going to start eating a Clif Peanut Butter Builder's bar every day prior to working out for the needed sugar for energy but that'll be it. Good luck!
never2old May 24th, 2005, 09:26 PM You guys are BRAVE!! :claphigh: This, I gotta watch... Wishing all joiners total success! :tu:
But NO WAY am I joining! :D -Martin
supermanwannabe May 27th, 2005, 03:35 PM 3 down...no cravings: yet.
don_1987 May 28th, 2005, 01:41 AM Just a quick question here guys and gals... How come you people are so obsessed with chocolate? Personally, I know chocolate tastes great, but thankfully I'm not a chocoholic. But the question is, "What makes people addicted to chocolate?" There are more than a million of food to enjoy (and overeat  ), but why chocolate?

That's a great question!
I'd say that it's the combination of fats and sweet carbohydrites (both flavors are very appealing to the human taste buds for biological reasons).
But recent studies have shown that "Substances found in chocolate, such as phenylethylamine, theobromine, anandamide and tryptophan trigger mood enhancing chemicals and neurotransmitters to be released in the brain. Phenylethylamine is a chemical found in the body that is similar to amphetamine. It helps mediate feelings of giddiness, attraction, euphoria and excitement. Researchers believe phenylethylamine causes the brain to release mesolimbic dopamine in the pleasure centers of the brain, which peaks during an orgasm. This may be why women report to prefer chocolate to sex. However, tests have shown that most of the phenylethylamine in chocolate is broken down before it reaches the brain. So, the amount of phenylethylamine that actually reaches the brain is unknown"

So here ya go! ;)
Edit: Some more interesting info
"The love of chocolate dates back two thousand years or so to the Aztecs and the Mayans of Central and South America who originally cultivated cocoa. In these societies, the cocoa bean was valued as a stimulant, a source of energy, and an aphrodisiac. It was also used as money (4 beans for a large pumpkin or a turkey and 10 beans for a night with a prostitute). And champion chocoholic of all time may have been Aztec Emperor Montezuma II. He consumed fifty glasses of a honey sweetened chocolate drink each day and an extra goblet or two before sex, so they say.
Today, chocolate is the most commonly craved substance in the United States and Europe, according to a study published this year in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. This hunger apparently has a strong physiological basis. Chocolate contains its own cannabinoid--a compound that resembles the euphoria inducing ingredient in marijuana -- as well as related chemicals that can prolong any pleasurable sensation. Also, of course, there is the psychological side. Chocolate's smooth texture, luxurious melt-in-your-mouth quality, sweet taste and wonderful aroma surely add to its allure. "

supermanwannabe May 28th, 2005, 07:03 PM The sugar gets me. Besides that I don't know. What Gila said makes sense to me.

Personally, I prefer a good lover to eat chocolate with  ... (well he has to love chocolate too...) Fortunately, my SO (significant other) (who will probably read this on the sly) absolutely qualifies :D
Gila Monster May 31st, 2005, 02:02 PM Well, thats it folks! Bckle up, it's gonna be a bumpy ride tomorrow! :d_tongue:

Gila Monster June 3rd, 2005, 09:57 AM No chocolate so far! :gl:
Gila Monster June 4th, 2005, 03:45 AM NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
I had 1 square of chocolate... BUT IT WAS AN ACCIDENT!!!
Yesterday (Friday night) some friends and I went to a pub. Since I didn't want to drink any alcohol I went to a coffee shop and ordered a cup of coffee to go.
I don't know why the bartender did that, maybe he wanted to compensate for messing up my order at first (what's so bloody difficult abput a stupid cup of plain coffee??!), but the stupid idiot put 1 chocolate square in my cappuccino, and I didn't realise before it was too late!!!!
AAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
But the good part of this miserable faliur is that I didn't feel any forgotten longings for that chocolate. As if... I was indifferent to it.
I think my chocoholism is getting better!
Gila Monster June 8th, 2005, 01:34 AM No chocolate so far, yay! :tucool:
Gila Monster June 9th, 2005, 07:14 AM Well, no chocolate so far, but today my SO and I are going to a wedding. With all the chocolate hazzards there I'm afraid I won't pull it through... Perhaps I should feed before I go, but then I won't be able to suck in my stomach too much...
Tough call!
Oh well, wish me luck! :tucool:
---
Edit: I ate absolutely no desert in the wedding! Amazing! I never thought I could pull it through... Of course, I did eat a small meal before the wedding, so that probably helped.
Gila Monster June 12th, 2005, 04:14 PM Well, I had no chocolate at all so far, but seeing that I'm the only one posting on this challenge I'll robably drop it too.
