View Full Version : is whey part of the dairy family?
Ayanik7 Thu, May 19th, 2005, 02:54 PM hey guys,
My doctor prescribed me some medicine and i cant eat any dairy products within 2-3 hours of taking the medicine. I need to take the medicine before bed and thats the time i usually have my shake. Its a whey blend shake with no ceasein(sp).
I know milk has whey in it. So thats why i was curious if whey is party of the dairy family.
Thanks!

Do you know why you can't have dairy? If it's because of the lactose, I don't think whey has lactose in it, but I'm not 100% sure. It'd be worth looking up.

Agree :tu:
Andrew Sun, May 22nd, 2005, 01:01 PM Why don't you ask your doctor? He probably won't know, but he might.
Maybe dairy products have whey...but what types of protein to other foods have? Because if other foods with protein have whey protein in them, well then you could use the same logic to say that they are all dairy products.. :d_confuse
I always thought dairy meant milk and milk products, and I'm pretty sure you don't get whey protein (the powder stuff) from cows...
Laura Sun, May 22nd, 2005, 01:42 PM Yes, it is. I would listen to the others that suggested that you ask your doctor. The reason may be one that would not one that would preclude you from taking whey protein.

JabbaTheGutt Sun, May 22nd, 2005, 01:54 PM I don't eat Whey Protein (Vegan Diet) but I could recommend Soy Protein for your shakes as a temporary solution until your done your medicine...
Good luck,

We know it's DERIVED from milk, but that doesn't necessarily make it a dairy product, it's just made up of something found in a dairy product. The whey in dairy products might not be the reason he can't eat them, which is why he should ask his doctor. But, if avoiding it's not a big deal, then you don't NEED to ask.

What are you talking about? How exactly do you define a "dairy" product?
