View Full Version : why is dextrose better than fuit after work out? This particular info comes from Dr. J. Berardi, but I have seen many similar studies and evidence: "Maltodextrin is a glucose polymer (a string of glucose units put together, similar to the protein peptide). It is therefore, by definition, a complex carbohydrate. However it's more complex nature does NOT slow digestion. Therefore, the GI and II remain high. Maltodextrin is the absolute best carbohydrate to consume during exercise for rapidly delivering blood glucose and for muscle glycogen recovery. It's also best for fluid uptake. Dextrose (glucose) is a simple carbohydrate unit (similar to the amino acid). While it's good for exercise situations (malto is better), you're probably better off adding some dextrose to your maltodextrin formula. A little bit of dextrose may enhance the already excellent fluid uptake that occurs with maltodextrin during exercise. Based on the three studies I reviewed (Blom et al 1987, ven Den Burgh et al 1996, Piehl et al 2000), it appears that dextrose is 72% faster than fructose for muscle glycogen resynthesis . As a result, at the end of 8 hours, muscle glycogen was 30% higher with dextrose ingestion. However, in another study, at the end of 4 hours, muscle glycogen was 15% higher with maltodextrin ingestion vs. dextrose. So dextrose kicks fructose's butt although malto beats up on dextrose." As a practical matter, I definitely noticed improved recovery and lifting performance when I switched from fruit to dextrose PWO. I now use a malto/dex blend and recover excellently. The studies (above) indicate this is best. I couldn't determine for myself as I changed many factors in my program the same time as changing from dex/whey PWO to malto/dex/whey PWO. Cziffra Wed, May 18th, 2005, 07:30 PM One month ago I stopped having dextrose and I'm having oats instead PWO. I haven't notice any difference in recovery. Oats (or fruit) are just as fine. As an endo I think dextrose is not very beneficial to me. I prefer to have insulin under control EVEN PWO. JeremyWildcat Thu, May 19th, 2005, 12:48 PM Might be all in my head but it seems like I've seen greater gains since adding dex to my PWO shake a few weeks ago. I used to eat a banana with it most of the time, when I had them around. Just seems easier to add the dex while making it too, plus it's very cheap. Makes my shake way too sweet, but I can handle it. wh0rume Thu, May 19th, 2005, 01:24 PM Makes my shake way too sweet, but I can handle it. Add some kent glutamine peptide powder and see what you say then! that stuff could choke a moose! I'm just wondering b/c it seems like the fruit would be a better alternative after your work out b/c it's all natural. you know... some people would consider snake-venom "all natural" too... too high in fat for my tastes though.. i think dex might be natural, but that's irrelivant. the stuff does exactly what you want it to do - insulin spike. how much of it is debated, and i dont think anyone knows for sure. i wish swolecat still posted here. |
