View Full Version : Sushi
PaulWade Fri, May 13th, 2005, 06:19 PM I love sushi. I miss sushi. I would marry sushi, but she's a filthy...nevermind.
So anyway, is sushi good or bad? My own deductions thus far in my vast (2 week) experience with eating clean is that the fish parts are good, any rice parts are bad. However, just having sashimi, while quite yummy, is rather boring. I don't particularly like the plain old fish on a ball of rice sushi (nigiri), but I do like rolls, hand and otherwise.
So, is that correct? Also, which cuts are better? I'm guessing salmon is good, maybe yellow tail also, but any others?
I'm jonesing big time for some sushi. Just want to know how far off my diet I'd be going to get some. I'd keep the rolls to a minimum, so maybe not too far?
Too bad I don't know any place that makes rolls with brown rice instead of white.
What does everyone else think? By everyone, I mean people who like sushi. If you don't like sushi, that's cool too, but I'm guessing sushi lovers would like this topic more.
I'll shut up now. :claplow:

I love sushi. I don't know of any place that would make it with brown rice. I don't know if brown rice taste good with sushi. But here are the directions for it.
Ingredients for StickyRice to make approximately 4 rolls
2 cups Raw Rice (short or med grain)
2 cups + 2 tbsp Water
4 tbsp Rice Vinegar
2 tbsp + 1 tsp Sugar
1 tsp Salt
The Reaver of Darkness Fri, May 13th, 2005, 06:32 PM I like Sushi. Actually I think the main reason for that is that I've always liked raw meat and sea meats were generally preferrable to me over land meats. I don't know the nutritional value of the rice, but considering it took me several months and plenty of sushi rolls to even be sure it really was rice, there might be something up with it. Personally I like just the plain fish, I was always irritated by how much rice and seaweed there was and how little fish was in it. (I like seaweed but when it's dry it doesn't make a great meal) I guess the neat thing about seaweed is it's a source of raw meat I can get and people won't say I'm strange for eating it, and also it's supposed to be safe because it comes from the ocean.

Reaver, you are seriously...um...weird. But in a good way. :p
don_1987 Fri, May 13th, 2005, 09:30 PM Who said rice is bad? :( Well, maybe brown rice is better than white rice but still, I wouldn't consider rice as a "bad" food. Just eat them in moderatiion, of course ;)
Sushi... well you can't go wrong with sashimi. It's mostly protein (if you pick tuna), but if you pick salmon or other fatty fish, then you better watch out for the fat content also
Sushi... if you pick the one with rice (I think it's called "norimaki"), I think a meal would consist 6 rolls. That's approximately 300-400 kcal. And I believe it's a healthy meal too (good balanced in term of carb/protein/fat) :tu:
Chris Fri, May 13th, 2005, 11:39 PM I'd kill for some Eel avocado rolls right about now :eat: but anyway, sushi is fine as long as you don't overdo it, which isn't easy considering how expensive it can get...
glenn_001 Sat, May 14th, 2005, 07:51 AM I eat it all the time.
George Sat, May 14th, 2005, 10:40 AM I eat it about once a week and don't count it as a cheat meal. Around here we have a roll called the "Michigan Roll". The amount of tuna in these is huge.
Stecman Sat, May 14th, 2005, 01:14 PM Tuna is so yummy. :eat:
don_1987 Sat, May 14th, 2005, 09:08 PM Tuna is so yummy. :eat:
And I just knew that there where many types of tuna. Damn, here in the Philippines they call it with different names like tulingan = frigate tuna. Geez, it's so damn hard to calculate calories correctly, especially if you don't know what fish it is. But you know it's healthy :( So I'll eat it anyway :eat:
Zerebus Sat, May 14th, 2005, 10:28 PM Too bad I don't know any place that makes rolls with brown rice instead of white.
Interestingly enough, the Whole Foods supermarket near me sells some sushi rolls with brown rice, and judging from the look of the sushi counter, you could probably request anything you'd like from them and they can make it with brown rice (honestly, though, I've only purchased rolls that were already prepared and packaged in those little cartons).
I think the brown rice sushi rolls I've eaten so far have been excellent.
Speaking of brown rice, regarding white rice vs. brown rice. My nutritionist lectured me on this one, and she informed me that in the net total calories you aren't gaining any advantage by eating brown rice instead of white rice. Furthermore, the rates at which the two rice types are digested has little or no bearing on how much weight you gain (which is a total calories in/total calories out thing). So if that's the only reason why you want brown rice instead of white rice, then maybe you should be a little more lenient with yourself.
Though yeah, nutrient/fiber wise, brown rice beats white rice, but that doesn't mean white rice is especially bad for you (unless you're on one of those fad diets).
Now then, you'll want to get an idea of what's in what sushi roll:

I love eel. And looking at the fat content of unagi/eel, I can see why! ....I gotta find me a tempura eel roll... kinda like fried fish lard...
Ahem. Sorry, slipped for a moment there. Given the numbers, if you can budget it into your diet, then you can eat it, right?
Robbyrh10 Tue, May 17th, 2005, 01:44 PM Sushi is one of my favorite foods. Gotta love those Rainbow Rolls, just wish they had a little more fish and less rice. You wanna avoid the crunchy shrimp, eel, and rolls made with mayo. Most "cheap" sushi joints use mayo and other junk to add flavor. Eat it n moderation and enjoy;)
Zerebus Tue, May 17th, 2005, 08:10 PM Incidentally, I've heard that fried mayonaise is all the rage in Japan...
Yeah, moderation is definately in order. I once did some real damage to myself not being careful what I ate at a sushi restaurant. My story of food poisoning via raw mackeral aside, I learned that you can gain a lot of weight by eating tempura-anything rolls. Best to stick to the true sushi.

Yeah, I knew to avoid the tempura stuff. In advertently got a roll with some tempura shrimp and yellow tail in it...I just picked off as much of the tempura as I could.
It was good to look at some of the numbers though. It means as long as I don't go hog wild I can have sushi regularly and not have to call it a cheat. Serve it up! :eat:
Kampai! :tu:

Speaking of which, watch that Kirin Beer intake... ;)
