I hate jogging. I've played video games/watched tv when on the bicycle, but that's getting old. It's still a little early for swimming season here in Indiana (I love to swim).

I do play basketball a few times a week, usually 1.5-2 hours at a time, but that includes waiting for games, picking teams up, and other "downtime". Can I count this as cardio? I probably get 30-45 minutes of actual activity, but obviously is mixed in with a lot of time my heartrate would drop.

Can I drop the jogging on those days, or should I just continue to grind through it? I'd drop it and see, but I'd be hard pressed to start back up probably once I quit on those days.

looking at what you said, i'd consider the basketball playing as uncontrolled HIIT. theres alot of sprinting in basketball, and alot of waiting around. - so that should be fine for your cardio.

but is it working for you? I'm assuming you're cutting? if your progress has stalled, then you should add more cardio. you might hate jogging, but try grabbing a walkman/ipod and go fast-walking outside.

or - if you do weight training, look into HIT (see rtestes' links in his signature). there is less rest time inbetween excersizes, so your heartrate will stay elevated.

i used to hate jogging until i did it with an ipod. now im hooked.

i dread the days i cant go jogging because i have to rest. this coming from dreading the days when i had to wake up to go jogging.

Jogging those extra few days is unnecessary, maybe even counter-productive. Playing ball for a few hours is certainly enough exercise to account for cardio for the day.

I am cutting. Well, technically I'm a newb so I'm trying to cut fat and gain muscle, which sees to be working for right now. :) I'm enjoying those days until it stops, which I'm sure will be soon.

I've got an mp3 player, and it helped some but was still a drag. I even dumped all the metal I usually listened to and tried a bunch of comedy songs to keep me in a good mood.

I'm sure that even if I was doing nothing (I'm probably a good 30% bf right now) I'd lose, as my diet has gotten better, so it's hard to judge how much the cardio/lack of cardio would effect things right now. I'll just stop the running on bball days until I plateau. That might make the days I do end up running not so bad, who knows? Plus by then I can probably start hitting the pool anyway.

Thanks for the advice!

Do you like doing cardio? Then do it. Don't worry too much about overdoing it- sports teams, like football, do double sessions (2-3hrs 2x/day), and they don't seem to care if that's too much exercise. And I don't think those guys worry about getting too skinny, losing muscle, or overtraining (well, maybe overtraining...).

Honestly, if you're around 30%bf, you could stand to drop that weight fairly quickly, and in a healthy way if you were running everyday and eating well. Not only will you be losing fat, but you'll get in great shape too.

Sounds good. Bbal should be enough cardio for the day. You don't want to overdo it.

Another thought is, if you hate jogging, find something else you like. Hiking, tennis, rowing, biking, racquetball.....
