View Full Version : Please critque my diet
BigL Thu, May 12th, 2005, 10:27 AM Hey guys, I've been using this diet for almost a year now and I was wondering if its safe and healthy for me. I've lost 60 pounds doing it but Im not sure if I lost a lot of body fat. My waistline did decrease dramamtically so I guess I did. sO i was wondering if you guys can critique my diet and see what I should possibly add to it.
Meal #1 7am: 2 egg whites and one, thin slice of a whole wheat pancake. I used to drink coffee with that meal, but now i've switched to decaffinated green tea.
Meal #2 12pm: Grilled chicken with portobello mushrooms, red peppers, and a little balsalmic dressing on a spinach wrap. I only eat half the wrap and save the other half for later.
Meal #3: 3pm: I eat the other half of the wrap, but just the inside, I throw away the wrap.
Meal #4: 7pm or 8:30'ish on days I go to the gym: I eat either a steak, chicken, or hamburger patties (no bun) on the BBQ.
THats basically it. I think I should be trying to eat alittle more veggies and there is a little bit of a long time gap between certain meals, but with work and all its so hard to eat every 2 to 3 hours.
I also give myself one "treat" meal every saturday and sunday night.
I do cardio 3 times a week first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
I also drink 3 cups of green tea a day.
Thats basically it. What do you guys think?
OoOGazOoO Thu, May 12th, 2005, 10:40 AM Fair bit of protein in there mate, not much carbs, do you get on ok energy wise with that little carbs? ? ?
The time between your first 2 meals is abit too long really, its 5 hours. If you could maybe just eat something again and about 9.30am that would be better.
BigL Thu, May 12th, 2005, 12:54 PM I feel fine energy wise. I eat little carbs because like I said I have treat meals once a day on saturday and sunday and I think that offsets everything. BUt I never feel weak.
I will start eating something inbetween that time gap you mentioned.
Thanks.
wh0rume Thu, May 12th, 2005, 03:10 PM throw 2 whole meals in there. you should be eating 6 meals a day. the 6 number isnt as important as eating MORE. if you counted the calories for that, you'd come up low.
For days you lift: you need to eat simple carbs + protien right after lifting (within the hour). after lifting, you need an insulin spike. dextrose (a simple sugar) is great for this, but any simple carb (HIGH GI) will work, and in combination with a good portion of protien. you're pwo meal should be at least 400 calories worth of carbs/protien.
how much do you weigh? bf%?

I weigh 225. Im not sur eof my bf%, i use that caliper thing and it says 14-16% of body fat but im not sure how accurate it is.
Eating carbs after working out will not prevent me from losing weight, right?

it will help things. all the carbs eaten PWO will go to your muscles. (assuming you're not eating a candybar or cookies)
slush_puppy Fri, May 13th, 2005, 10:30 AM Hey guys, I've been using this diet for almost a year now and I was wondering if its safe and healthy for me.You're wondering a year later if your diet is safe? I think it's safe, but it could be improved some. wh0areume has the right idea, you should figure out all the stats on your diet... total calories, how much protein, carbs and fat you're eating, things like that. That's the best way to analyze your diet.
Also, like wh0areume said, you should check into a PWO shake. Search on "PWO" (no quotes of course) and you'll find lots of info. The carbs in a PWO shake are essential for recovering your muscles after a lifting workout. Don't have a PWO shake after your cardio, though, just after lifting. Because you are eating so few carbs, the PWO shake is that much more important. You'll see a difference in both recovery and growth from it.
The one thing I notice about your diet is that it doesn't look like you get too much healthy fat, or fat at all for that matter. The only fat I could find was from the balsalmic dressing on half your wrap and the meat you cook, which is probably very lean already. Think about adding some nuts, peanut butter or flax oil into your diet to bring the amount of fat up. These fats are good for digestion, joints and overall health.
To be honest, you've lost 60 pounds using that diet, so it must be working for you. Keep up the good work, 60 pounds is awesome! :tucool:
Oldboy Fri, May 13th, 2005, 02:57 PM anyone know if a PBJ with whole wheat, natty pb and natural grape jelly is bad? ONly thing I am worried about is the jelly, but it says its just sugar from the fruit

Thanks for your advice. I used to eat walnuts a lot, i will get back to doing that.

Cool, walnuts are excellent!
BigL Fri, May 13th, 2005, 03:49 PM Hey slush, I did a search on PWO and I didnt get many useful results. I went to GNC.com, did a search and I got no results. WHAT Does PW0 stand for? Where can I buy it?
Thanks
Oldboy Fri, May 13th, 2005, 05:23 PM you spelled it wrong on the second word. it stands for Post Workout, typically a shake, usually high in carbohydrates, that you take within 15 minutes of lifting, because thats when your muscles absorb the most

Buy a 10 pound bag of dextrose from Kent Nutrition (see banner ad up top). Take your scoop that you use for your whey protein and put 1.5 scoops of whey into a blender. Now, using the same scoop, take 1.5 scoops of dextrose and put it in the blender. Mix it up with about 16 oz water and that's a great post-workout (PWO) shake. Doing that gives you a 2:1 carb to protein ratio which works very well after lifting.
BigL Mon, May 16th, 2005, 01:35 PM Hey Slush, how many walnuts should I eat? This morning I ate 10 of them (i only had the ones in the shell.) Is that too much or too little?
Also, just to make sure, the PWO shake wont prevent you from losing weight, right?
