Anyone willing to see if we can go 30 days without chocolate? I have done it before when I went from 205 to 165...but I have seemed to work my way back up to 205. My biggest weakness is chocolate. I crave it like crazy. Anybody up for it?

Oh man, this is tempting! Let me think about it at least one day. I do need to prove that I can hold that kind of power over the stuff...just don't suggest the same challenge with PIZZA!!!

I reach for chocolate-flavored things so impulsively, perfection for 30 days might be unrealistic. Plus, I just bought some special ice cream that's my favorite. It has chocolate in it, and I don't want it to sit in the freezer untouched for a whole month. It's enough of a victory just to dip into it for a cup or so ONLY twice a week!

At the moment, I'm leaning toward doing this 30-day "fast" sometime, just not right away. Maybe, since my birthday is in late August, I could manage better with a 30-day stretch sometime after June. Then, celebrate with a chocolate splurge on the b-day...

I have no problems with chocolate or other sweets. No problem at all.

Sit in frount of me with pizza - My mouth is going like pavlovs dogs. ALL OF THEM!

I'd join you ... but I can't for the life of me think of why I would want to give up chocolate! I am a chocolate fanatic myself, but because I allow myself to have chocolate (I put cocoa in my coffee, have dark chocolate pieces here and there, etc) I don't have to break down. In fact, last photo shoot at 7% I was eating little pieces of chocolate right up to the end ... it's not the chocolate that is bad, it's the calories, so I kept the chocolate, controlled the calories.

Good luck! Sometimes it takes ultimate discipline and sacrifice to learn moderation and control. I had to give up alcohol for a long time before I could learn to enjoy it in moderation.

Im with jeremy on this

Your vices arent the problem, its moderating them

anything done in moderation isnt all that bad

LCJ
May 8th, 2005, 02:08 PM
I realize it's the moderation, but if I can kick it for 30 days then I can start back with moderation. ;)

Let's give the rest of the day to see if anyone else wants to join before we set up rules.

No chocolate - day 1.

Twas somewhat difficult because I went grocery shopping today, and there they were... so shining and tempting chocolate bars...
I shot one glance at them and all of a sudden they were illuminated with bright light and heavenly music started to play...

But I gathered my sences and moved on.
As the saying goes, far from sight - far from heart (or somethign like that). It wasn't so hard to get over the craving once I moved on to the veggie section. :d_tongue:

Good luck over here. :) I'm doing something similar over in the Progress and Perfection challenge thread--no candy (including the chocolate kind) at all from May 1-July 1. I don't crave candy, but I will eat it if it's around unless I set a limit on myself like this. And why waste the calories on something I don't actually dream about?

Luckily, chocolate flavored protein powder, protein cake, protein bars, etc. don't count as candy. Heh.

Aah, no biggie LCJ! After all, this is the point of this challenge, nay? :)

Yesterday was a too busy day for me to even start the computer, but it went quite fine. I didn't eat any chocolate, however I did get the craving for sweets  so I ate a few pieces of Vanilla Soy beans and 2 Verters.
But no chocolate! :tu:

1-2...and it was tough...my wife (God love her) made my favorite chocolate chip cookies, even though I have asked her not to because I can't resist them. I resisted them. My cravings are really bad after lunch, when I get home from work, and about 9:00 at night. I know why people smoke, I want chocolate (sugar) so bad it's clawing at me.

Hey that is really Excellent if you resisted HOME BAKED CHOC CHIP COOKIES. It is one thing to have the chocolate in there, but it's another thing to talk about FRESHLY BAKED cookies, with that fresh, sweet, delicious, moist, tender, orgasmic cookie dough to boot. Freshly made cookies just melt in your mouth (especially choc chip). I know when they are made, I have gone in for 10-20 cookies the size of your fist.

Just had to tip my hat off to you for resisting those. Try chewing gum when you come home at night, that may really help, and it's probably only 5-10 calories for the chewy gum

Just to let you brave challenge-takers know: what you are doing, MATTERS. Just as a salute to you guys, yesterday, I completely avoided anything chocolate flavored. Keep it up - even we who aren't "in" need to witness your success, for our inspiration!

Yay - I resisted yet another going to the grocery store! :claphigh:

AND I found the cover of my ultimately favorite chocolate bar in the garbage can today!!!

Wow, that sounds BAD! Let me rephrase it - I wanted to throw some egg shells in the garbage, and when I removed the trash can cover I saw the covers laying there in peace...
My boyfriend has been secretly eating my most favorite chocolate bars! The bars with the ultimate power to destroy any man's healthy diet!!!

I guess I should be happy that he didn't tell me anything and thus helped me to keep my diet clean, but I can't help but feel emptiness and longing... :d_rolleye

My cheat "meal" was several spoonfulls of honey! I ate so much sweetness that I think I'll skip it fo the next week!

Funny, to me - trying to quit eating chocolate is like giving up on an addiction... Well, perhaps (surely) this is what it was - an addiction! I'm really glad I started this challenge - I feel clean of the effects and I don't think I'll get back to chocolate again. It's just too addictive for me.

I think I'll add chocolate to the list of things I gave up on completely and entirely:

Anything fried
Any soda
Hamburgers
And now chocolate!

I am terribly addicted to chocolate, but I wouldn't want to try to give it up because I'm sure I'd just replace it with a worse evil. Several times, I've tried to cut back on diet Coke, and I end up eating brownies instead.

I do believe chocolate has more health benefits than honey.

On my personal "forbidden" list are french fries and hot dogs. The only ones I forbid are ones that I'm not crazy about. Donuts and alcohol are partially forbidden because I do enjoy them once in a while.

Oh yeah, french fries are the ultimate evil!!! It's carbohydrits fried in recicled fats... BRRRR!!! :d_confuse

The important thing, In my opinion, is to get to know your body! If you know that by giving up on something you'll end up eating something worse, then it's great - you've discovered your limits and now you know how to manipulate around them to achieve maximum results :)

Ad I haven't given up on pizza myself. I mean, I haven't eaten it in quite a while, but I haven't given up on in mentaly.

I try to convince myself though :D

The "transference" phenomenon is real, I can testify. Be careful y'all, about avoiding chocolate but meanwhile "compensating" by transferring cravings to other things like honey.

I thought I'd lose weight, back in July '04 when I quit full-sugar soft drinks for good. But I GAINED, up until New Year's weekend of '05. I shifted my craving to other sugary foods, but did not kill the craving.

Then I just shifted, period. And "killed." Now 5 months later, I weigh 40 lbs less.

KEEP GOING Y'ALL! YOU CAN DO IT! PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT! SO DON'T SWEAT THE "FALLS!" -Martin

For some reason, chocolate never appealed hugely to me. Id like it if i ate a little, but then it would be too much for me. By the way, I have not had ANY chocolate (except 2 pieces of sugar free chocolate on one night, and the corner of a brownie the other night) in 6 months. Thats when I started my program =P
Ice cream/pizza was much harder to give up. I still have these on occasion.
I never really drank much regular colas before, either. Ive only had diet sodas/lemonade/water for the 6 months as well.

That is quite true!

For me, I can say that I didn't trade chocolate obsession for something else (I can hardly call my honey loving an addiction - I can't swallow more than 3-4 spoons. This is just waaaaaaaay too sweet! ;) ).
I'm quite proud of my current eatin habbits - they are a great improvement over what I used to eat like a year ago!

Way to go, Giliba! :tu: Like I was taught in church, "Temptation is not sin." It's the giving in to temptation that's the "fall." You're gaining in resistance to temptation, so you're on the right track.

I wrote a heap today in my journal ("never2old's ever4ward journey") about abrupt changes, including changes in eating. You might be amused to read another's story - about how I ate baby food, and only baby food, until I was 4 yrs old! My intended main point is, with the right conditioning of your mind, you can make amazing (and amazingly abrupt) changes for the better!

Stay strong in control of chocolate - you just might inspire me (or someone) to suggest a constructive "cookie abstinence challenge" in these forums soon! -Martin

Yesterday was really tough! Up untill yesterday I was going just fine through this challenge, but yesterday the cravings struck me! I just imagined the wonderful, creamy flavor of a certain chocolate bar and I felt I was going to die if I didn't have it right there right then! (Luckaly we don't have any sweets nad snacks at our place, so I all I did was crave :D )

As a matter of fact, 30 minutes later I forgot about that chocolate whatsoever and the cravings were gone, but I still bought some healthy snacks in the store and treated myself with a couple - just to calm myself and make sure my mind was happy.

Today my boyfriend and myself have finished the remaining bars so there will bo no such hazzards in the neartime. Plus the way I feel my body I can say I won't be craving for any chocolate in the near future.

Anyway, the day's over, no chocolates today! Though my diet wasn't the greatest, and I ate several health bars too many (I really should get my meals more planned!) but on the brigt side I can say that I learned my lessons and I will try my best to treat my body better. :D

A female friend bought me a triple chocolate cookie, I've seldom eaten something so delicious, but I knew then and know now I won't have any trouble not eating it.
Cold turkey is very bad imho, you're only making the chocolate a forbidden fruit. Make sure that when you eat chocolate it's conscious decision, instead of giving in to temptation or not eating because you have a challenge.
Make sure you eat enough, if you're hungry AND you're near chocolate, you're setting yourself up for trouble. :)

I guess it all deends on the person - some feel more comfortable minimising the chocolate intakes, knowing that they have it under control, and others prefer to exclude it entirely.
My reasons, BTW are not entirely based on my desire to loose fat, I just consider chocolate not so healthy and prefer not to eat it all.

As for the thread - No chocolate so far! Yay!

NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

:d_frown: :d_frown: :d_frown:

I had 1 square of chocolate... BUT IT WAS AN ACCIDENT!!!

Yesterday (Friday night) some friends and I went to a pub. Since I didn't want to drink any alcohol I went to a coffee shop and ordered a cup of coffee to go.
I don't know why the bartender did that, maybe he wanted to compensate for messing up my order at first (what's so bloody difficult abput a stupid cup of plain coffee??!), but stupid idiot the put 1 chocolate square in my cappuccino, and I didn't realise before it was too late!!!!

AAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

But the good part of this miserable faliure is that I didn't feel any forgotten longings for that chocolate. As if... I was indifferent to it.
I think my chocoholism is getting better! :D

Monday!!!

Woohoo - 30 days!!!

OK, let's summarise:
* 30 days without chocolate.
* craving days - very few.
* Giving in to temptation days - none.
* How do I feel about chocolate now - indifferent as long as I don't eat it (should I start eating it, I'd probably come back to my old cycle of craving -> eating chocolate -> more craving)

* Buttom line - success! :D

Just checking in...had lost track of the time...wow, those 30 days went fast, it seems, even for us non-abstainers from chocolate! :D

Way to go Gila Monster!!!! I'm sorry for answering late, I noticed just now you had asked me about Oreos a week or so ago...

NO OREOS! NOT ONE! (Now, to be fair, of course I have eaten other cookies and sweets - but nothing resembling an Oreo!)

The harder decision is going to be down the line, at some point, about alcoholic drinks. I might have to quit them for life, too. But not right now.

LCJ, sorry to read of your carpal tunnel problem - hope it'll heal. I know what you mean about chocolate pies - had one in the house just a day or so ago. It went fast, but I still ate two pieces (about 25%) of it.

Well y'all, on to the next challenge - be seein' ya around the campus!

Hey Martin,
Thanks for the congratulations!

It's really great how you didn't eat oreos! Even if you did eat other cookies - the important thing was to quit that particular food! And once the cravings are gone or weakened you'd slow down on the other cookies as well!

Good luck with quiting alcohol! I think it's great! Alcohol is evil! ;)

LCJ, I hope you're doing OK - when you first wrote about the problem you had, I though you ment you have a problem with your computer, not knowing what a carpal tunnel problem is... :o
So I hope you're doing OK, and consider this challenge successfull!

Cheers,
Gila.

I didn't realize that you didn't know what carpal tunnel syndrome is ;) . Let me assure you...it sucks! Sorry I haven't been around, we spent the last week in humid St. Louis.

I consider the challenge a success as I no longer get the cold sweats around chocolate anymore and I can resist the intense craving. :D
