There seems to be quite a bit of conflicting advice on these forums as to the best time of the day to take in carbs.

Some people advocate getting plenty of low GI carbs early in the day and prior to working out, the argument being that doing so tops off muscle glycogen levels and allows for a more intense workout. They also suggest scaling back carb intake later in the day (PWO?).

On the other hand, I have also seen advocates of diets in which most of the day's meals consist of only protein and fat, restricting carb intake until after the workout (dextrose in a PWO shake, for instance).

What's the consensus here?

You need to get in most of your carbs around your workout (weights). Before and after your workout is when you should get in most of your daily carbs. I'm not saying this is the only time to eat carbs, just dont overdo it during your other meals and keep it lower (high GI post workout, low GI throughout the rest of the day).

After workout should be the dex/protien. Post workout is not when you need to replenish the carbs lost. CARBS are the most important thing after a workout, not protien. Get in some protien, but the carbs is what needs replenishing. Protien will be needed later on to build back up your muscle, but make sure to get in those carbs post workout. And dextrose is not the only thing that could be taken. Add a banana (yellow, not brown or green) to your shake, or even some oats, or both depending on how intense your workout was.

Complex carbs before lifting.
Simple carbs immediately after.
Complex carbs 60-90 mins after that.

Make sure to have carbs then. Other than that, eat carbs when you wish depending how they effect you personally. Noone can tell you when it's best for you to eat carbs. I eat them in almost every meal and never have a problem.

Me too, I eat carb in every meal, even dinner. As long as you're digesting complex carb it wouldn't hurt you, unless of course you have other cases like insulin resistant etc... But other than that, you'll be fine. But PWO is another thing, during this time, you'll need simple carb. And I believe it's the only time you really need a simple carb :)
