Hi! Lately I've been doing the Couch to 5K program (walk/jog program - walk 2 min/run 1.5 min for 40 minutes) and I've noticed that my HR skyrockets on the jogs and I'm not even going that fast (about 5 miles per hour for 1.5 minutes) My resting HR is around 90-100 and on the run part my HR gets to 170-180. Should I continue? Are there any breathing techniques that will help? Also, I have heard that you can lose muscle if you HR gets too high...true? Thanks!

I think a resting heart rate above 80 is considered quite high. Is your resting hr really 90-100? That's measured first thing in the morning as you wake up (no alarm). I should say that I'm not too familiar with people's resting heart rate being that high.

I would suggest that 170-180 is probably pretty high, even for someone pretty young, like you, especially if you are still pretty new to running. That's ok, I would suggest starting slower. Work your way up to that speed. Soon, you'll be able to go that speed without your heart rate getting so high because you muscles (especially your heart) will be more efficient.

Hope this helps.

I was also wondering about this...my resting heart rate is pretty normal (75 I think), but when I'm doing cardio it goes up to 185 when I'm even working that hard. I've been doing this for a few months now, does anyone know how long it takes for my heart to get better at this? I haven't noticed any change, despite doing cardio 4 times a week for the past 4 months. Any suggestions?

If your resting heart rate is THAT high I would get yourself to the Dr and get evaluated. It's worth getting it checked out, without a doubt.

Ok, I just took it again and it was at 78. Is this high for resting? I took it on and off throughout the day yesterday...maybe my heart was just beating faster than normal yesterday? I don't know. I do notice that sometimes, even if I'm just sitting still, my heart will speed up for no reason :d_confuse

The normal resting HR is anywhere from 60-100. A rate of 90-100 is NOT a cause for alarm.
