View Full Version : The New Superman
Arwes April 22nd, 2005, 02:06 PM Check it out, here's the first pic of relatively unknown actor Brandon Routh as Superman:

Looks like he's got some killer quads, calves, forearms & deltoids. Bulking really paid off for him! The comic book fanboys are livid because of the costume changes, but this suit screams classic Superman to me. Reminds me quite a bit of the Superman from the old Max Fleischer cartoons. At any rate, Joe Q. Public hasn't seen a Superman movie in nearly 20 years so the suit will be close enough for your average movie goer. Thoughts?
Bluestreak April 22nd, 2005, 02:14 PM Thoughts? Superman is in desperate need of an updated look. The carbon-fiber texture gives the suit somewhat of an edgier look, but ... it's still a dude in a skin tight get-up. Heeeeello!! I'm sure the rainbow coalition will be out in force to catch this flick. The updated look Hollywood gave to the X-Men and Batman is more along the lines of the look that appeals to me for a live-action comic book flick.
Great physique on him.

Yep, Superman is one of the hardest characters to update since it has so much prior film history. Some people still gripe about the Batman suit being black or even dark gray. Tim Burton's Superman movie would've had Nic Cage in a black rubber Superman suit. Now that would've taken some getting used to!
Arwes April 22nd, 2005, 02:25 PM BTW, here's the official synopsis of the movie:
Following a mysterious absence of several years, the Man of Steel comes back to Earth in the epic action-adventure Superman Returns, a soaring new chapter in the saga of one of the world's most beloved superheroes. While an old enemy plots to render him powerless once and for all, Superman faces the heartbreaking realization that the woman he loves, Lois Lane, has moved on with her life. Or has she? Superman's bittersweet return challenges him to bridge the distance between them while finding a place in a society that has learned to survive without him. In an attempt to protect the world he loves from cataclysmic destruction, Superman embarks on an epic journey of redemption that takes him from the depths of the ocean to the far reaches of outer space.
Directed by Bryan Singer (X2: X-Men United, X-Men, "The Usual Suspects"), Superman Returns stars Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth ("Beyond the Sea," "Blue Crush"), James Marsden (X2: X-Men United, "The Notebook"), Frank Langella (HBO's "Unscripted"), Academy Award-winner Eva Marie Saint ("North By Northwest"), Parker Posey ("Best in Show"), Kal Penn ("Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle"), Sam Huntington ("Detroit Rock City") and Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey ("Beyond the Sea," "American Beauty," "The Usual Suspects").
Superman Returns will be released on June 30, 2006 by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
Remember Superman III with Richard Pryor, and Superman IV with that stupid nuclear guy? Forget em. This is a sequel to Superman II, in that it uses the Richard Donner films as a 'vague history'. Not sure how this is gonna fly over with the general public.

Of course you do. Chicks everywhere will swoon over a dude built like that in tights.
I'd take Nic Cage in the rubber suit. Burton had the right idea, if'n you ask me. The suit was outdated and effeminate when Reeve donned it in 1978. Of course, back then they wore long collars, drenched suede shirts in paisleys, and wore pastel colored polyester pants.
My personal take is that Hollywood should suck it up and be different with a new generation of Superman movies. Leave the old franchises behind (it wasn't that good in the first place!). They're dated. From the looks of the picture you posted, my instant and overly judgmental senses tell me it'll probably be a slightly updated version of where Reeve left off. They'll probably oversaturate the picture with CGI enhancements a la "Incredible Hulk" - and "Hulk" was possibly a bigger disappointment to me than the first Punisher was. Hell, at least Dolph Lundgren looked the part of his character even if he couldn't act his way out of a paper bag.
I don't want to judge the film from just a picture, or before I even see the trailer, but I'd betcha this is a wait-for-DVD movie for me. Few movies capture my interest anymore because directors overuse computer animation to the point where it aggrevates me. Sometimes I long for the days when bluescreen technology wasn't available... at least then, I felt like I was getting my money's worth instead of feeling like I'm seeing a slightly more realistic animated film on the big screen.

He's trying to minimize the amount of CGI where possible though. They have a flying rig that can span the length of three football fields, and from what I've heard it'll get you up to around 100mph. Sounds like a fun ride! :)
I know where you're coming from though about the costume. There's really not much you can do to something that was designed in 1938. It's kind of entrenched in people's minds, almost like Santa Claus. I actually thought it was kinda cool when he turned into the pure electricity Superman in the comics, but I knew it wouldn't last long.
PeteBDawg April 22nd, 2005, 03:12 PM Two things
1. I like Ang Lee's Hulk a lot. It's silly to argue about the merits of these movies, but I really enjoyed it; I've seen it four times.
2. Sure, Superman looks ridiculous, but I always thought that was part of the point, you know? Superman is invulnerable, so if anybody can pull off that ridiculous getup, it's going to be him.
It makes sense for Batman to get a chic, trendy costume update - Batman is tremendously insecure. It makes sense for the X-men to update their wardrobe - they're already outcasts enough as it is, their uniform is supposed to make them feel less so.
But this is Superman; when he's in the cape, he's the most justifiably confident dude around. If I could fly, shoot lasers out of my eyes, lift up mountains, and bounce bullets off my chest, and I wanted to go around in pantaloons for sentimental reasons, I'd go around in pantaloons and it would look good, because I'm frickin' Superman.
I think "updating" Superman's look is just showing a lack of confidence in your project. Superman's tremendously popular, famous, and beloved, he's not an unkown quantity- don't be afraid of portraying him as Superman instead of as the next big thing.
supaspic April 22nd, 2005, 03:23 PM I have to agree with Bluestreak. I wasnt looking for black leather, or any different colrs besides the original, but this new Supes look is kinda disappointing. I mean sure, its the clasiic look and thier tring to respect the Reeves look, but very blah. I mean I guess its hard to make red underwear and a blue body suit look good since its 2 contrasting colors, but I think they could have tried better. Oh well, I guess its not the suit as it is if he fills the shoes for good ol' Mild-Mannered Clark Kent, and makes Superman look good.
Supa
Bluestreak April 22nd, 2005, 03:40 PM Superman is as iconic as any superhero ever will be to the movie going public; no arguing that at all, Pete.
To me, maintaining Supe's outfit is upholding a tradition simply for the sake of its age. People cried foul when Batman took on the "Goth" look in '89. Good 'ol Adam West went ballistic that the image he created in the 60's was being abandoned. That movie went on to break records when it opened and is, in my opinion, one of the greatest live-action superhero films ever made. Why? It took something old and made it new in what was at the time a daring way.
1938 was 1938. 1978 was 1978. Reeve last put the suit on in 1987, and gladly so as that movie was a bomb to end them all. That was then... this is now. If something's dated, I have no qualms with tossing the old and giving the new a try.
Eh. We'll see. A certain somebody can probably bribe me to take her so she can ogle whassisface in his pansy blue tights. Maybe I'm wrong and they'll do it justice. I'm just reacting to a gut feeling from what I saw in a single photo. Makes for good discussion.

wh0rume April 22nd, 2005, 04:13 PM man... where's Dean Cain when you need him? IMO he was the ultimate superman.
This kid looks too young.

Wasn't Dean Cain's last big thing when he played the murderer Scott Peterson in a made for TV movie?

What's funny is that he's the same age that Christopher Reeve was when he first started filming in 1977 (25 years old). Poor Dean Cain had the worst costume IMO...that \S/ nearly covered his entire torso...waay too huge. Oh well, TV budgets..
Monkey April 22nd, 2005, 04:33 PM I'm thinking that MIGHT not be just a skin tight suit. I'm thinking that maybe those aren't his shoulders and maybe not even his forearms. We assume too much on this. Maybe it is him though. Who knows. I know that the Spiderman suit had a little "extra" added to it for the second movie. Maybe Supe's does too.

I thought that too, and even heard early on in preproduction that they might do that. Then I read this quote on ThisisLondon:
Muscled Routh does not need any fake padding to fill out his skin-tight costume.
Here's a link to said story. (http://www.thisislondon.com/insiders/guides/articles/18106085?source=Evening%20Standard)
Guess we'll find out for sure on the DVD extras. :D
don_1987 April 23rd, 2005, 07:08 AM The material used to make this superman costume looks similiar to the material used to make spiderman's newest costume. But it looks great. From the waist up, he looks good (especially the face), looks similar to the previous superman. But I'm not too crazy about the belt and the boots. To be honest, I think the boots kinda sucks... :d_redface
Totally out of the topic, but what does "IMO" means?
dczoner April 23rd, 2005, 07:25 AM 1) The suit sucks.
2) The guy in the suit - in my mind - ought to be the pinnacle of proper human form. This guy looks good, but could be better.
3) IMO = In My Opinion.
4) Hollywood needs to stop making comic book movies and perhaps make something, oh, i dunno, original for a change.
5) blah blah blah blah blah.
Dave (wanted to end on a solid 5)
Caruthias April 23rd, 2005, 11:14 AM I think what they should have done with the suit is used very subtle airbrushing. Not to add muscles... but to highlight the muscles already there.
The red is too dark.
The S is too small.
However, I'm fine with these things. My main gripe is the pictures of him as Clark Kent. He looks like Michael Jackson in those pictures! Or maybe a clothes Mannequin - it's hard to tell. Either way, it creeps me out.

Part of me wants the suit to look more like the Reeve suit, but that just seems kind of weird to me. Kinda hard to fill his shoes, so I imagine that's why they went a bit different with it. From what I've heard this is one of two or more suits he'll wear in the movie so who knows if this is THE suit?
The Clark Kent pics are hardly official...so the makeup he's wearing is going to look pretty weird. From what I've seen, the guy has a perpetual 5 o'clock shadow on his lip and they tried covering it with makeup. In the set pics, it looks like he has a milk moustache. I'm sure it'll look fine on film.
Word is, they're working on a teaser trailer to attach to Batman Begins this June with about 10 FX shots in it. I'm seeing Batman Begins anyways, so if there's a teaser for Superman then that's just icing on the cake.
