I thnk it would be better to do your low intensity cardio first for two reasons. As a warmup it gets your blood flowing so your less likely to injure yourself and it gets you heart rate up. It is easy to maintain your heart rate once you elevate it so by workouting out at you can keep your heart rate a little higher for a little longer techincally increasing the length of you cardio session an extra twenty minutes or so depending on the intensity of you workout.

I only do that on days that I cannot fit both in with at least a 4-8 hour gap in between. I don't like doing it because I have read in many different places that cardio immediately after lifting negates some of the lifting results/ muscle growth.

Ironically I did exactly this yesterday (bi's/ tri's then 4 miles on the treadmill) for the first time in a long time.

The best results I ever got were when I did my lifting routine and then 25 minutes of cardio following it. I had done some research and talked to a bodybuilder friend of mine who said if you lift first it depletes all the glycogen in the muscles which puts you in a great state for cardio. However, do not do the full 45 minutes, do about 20-25 to keep from losing muscle or hindering growth. Scientifically I cannot explain it any more than that, but I know it worked really well for me.

I've never done a lift session then had a "massive PWO shake" and then done cardio right after.......if it were me I'd save the shake till I was totally done. Just drink water during session. :jumping:

I have done this several times.. however.. I take a book with me... I do my workout and drink my PWO shake and then I sit for 20 - 30 minutes and read my book... letting the PWO shake fuel my muscles and work through my system some... that way I know I'm not just working the PWO shake off AND I know I'm not going to give myself a belly ache / side split because I have food in my tummy when I hit the cardio ;)

That PWO shake makes your supposed fat-loss cardio session all for naught. Since it's filled with lots of simple, fast-acting carbs, some will be used to replenish glycogen stores, and some will be used for quick energy. You are spiking insulin as well.

When you do cardio, you need to *deplete* glycogen stores first before lypolysis can take place. The only benefit you are getting from your cardio session is cardiovascular health, which, in and of itself, is clearly beneficial.

I do cardio after lifting, and I haven't experienced muscle loss during cutting. A lot of people, due to time restraints, do this.

Well what i have been doing is kinda simple.

I would do 50 min morning fasted cardio (no FOOD, only water) pretty high intensity, but not enough to get me to feel dizzy or light headed, but enough to get me to build up a sweat.

Then i go to work, and at about 7pm, id hit the weights first for about 25-30 min depending on what muscle groups ill be working on, and 2-3 min after that id do a 21 min HIIT Session on the Bike following 9 min of super low intensity cool down.

This has worked very very well for me for the last 3 weeks, and i am in no way put off by the amount of exercise i do in a given day. Truthfuly i love it :)

The HIIT and Weights i only do Monday, Thursday and Sunday. Morning fasted cardio i do every day, 7 days a week.

All in all, there is nothing wrong with following some weight lifting with cardio. At least i havent noticed any disadvantages.

I do the same thing we did in high school when training on the weightlifting team and football practice. I do 20-30 min of pretty high intensity cardio (w/sprints very similar to HIIT) then hit the weights. The only day I hold it down on the cardio is legs day (FRI for me), then I go only 15 min or so. I've already had good success with it for many years.

well.. you know what they say about opinions... so I won't repeat it :p however... I have seen very good results with this method... I DID say I wait half an hour before I hit the cardio... don't knock things before you try them... most of that sugar in the PWO shake is used in that half hour to transport the protien to the muscles I just worked, and whatever remaining amount in my system has not hurt my cardio or fat loss efforts in the least, I have been on cuts before and can tell you that my results are just as good if not better doing what I am now... I'm maintaining more muscle than I did before too.

I basically do a Max OT workout for 30 minutes and then do between 30 and 45 minutes of low intensity cardio... all in a semifasted state. (protein no carbs/glycogen) It has worked well for me. I know it is not ideal for muscle building but muscle building is not my goal. (though I have built muscle most likely by having a protein shake before it all)

yo Ryanator!

does one handle this the same as after fasted cardio... in terms of what you eat when you eat. im thinking one hits the pwo shake right after cardio (cardio done after lifting that is). so if this is the case then the cardio done right after lifting is only to use the fat as energy during that time when one is doing cardio... and not after that cardio session.... thats my guess. am i correct? anyone?
