View Full Version : Anyone familiar with Isagenics?
Bustmybutt April 10th, 2005, 09:25 PM A friend of mine swears on this stuff, and wants me to try it. It is a detox kit that lasts for nine days. The first two you eat nothing, the next five, you have one meal, and the provided meal replacements, and the last two, no food again. For the first and last two days, you drink cleansing drinks, so you are not starving so to speak. It is pretty costly, but my friend gets gets a huge discount on it. She dropped a ton of weight on it in two cleanses and has kept it off easily.
I was offered the kit for free, and do not have to pay if I am not happy with the results. AT least this way, I am not really losing. I will be doing it this week, when the kit is delivered to my door. I know nothing about it, but I am getting married next month in Vegas, and would like to drop a few pounds for that. I just came off of an 11 day Master Cleanse, and survuved that just fine. I feel great and thought the fasting was not that bad, so this will be a breeze.
I, of course and a skeptic, but was wondering if anyone else knows about this product or how it works. I will let you know what I think, but I doubt much will happen. I am a good sport and will humor the distributor and try the stuff to prove him wrong.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
slush_puppy April 10th, 2005, 09:37 PM I don't know a damn thing about what you're talking about, but it's great to see you posting again! Welcome back! :tucool:
Bustmybutt April 10th, 2005, 10:40 PM I have been so busy. I am glad you remember me. I am still keeping up with the fitness and health thing. I did my spring Master Cleanse and feel great because of it.
Hope all is well with you.
betastas April 10th, 2005, 11:08 PM Well, during the 4 days of fasting and drinking the "cleansing" drink, you will undoubtably catabolize a fair amount of LBM for the Basal Metabolic Functions. Your weight will go down, and your body will hold onto the fat for when the anticipated (but never arriving) real starving begins to happen. The same will go with the one meal a day thing. My question is: What are you cleansing? It seems that most people who develop toxic buildups in the body do so from malnutrition and improper eating - not from regular, clean eating, plenty of water, and proper exercise.
I have never been a fan of fastings, since many of the reasons for fasting stem from ancient religious beliefs, along with ancient economic planning to reduce food demand by convincing people to fast or abstain from certain foods (see not eating meat on fridays). Famine and starvation was common in those times, and usually fasting for a day would allow food to last longer.
I'm against all forms of fasting. I know some people here believe it is healthy and beneficial. We have differing oppinions. that I can safely say you CAN lose weight on fasting, but much of it will be LBM and not fat.
Regarding your friend having dropped the weight and kept it off - Your stomach contracts when you don't eat. When you begin to eat again, it gets full on less, and you eat less. Your metabolism will have also slowed, therefore demanding less food. It probably changed the her appetite patterns, and she ate less food to suit her lesser mass. Add to that any exercise she performed, and there is a huge caloric deficit.
Personally, I wouldn't touch those kits with a 10 foot pole, and I wouldn't fast for anything.
However, seeing as you mentioned you fasted before, and you're aware of the possible muscular loss, you aren't going to be in for anything new. What makes me skeptical about it's effectiveness is the lack of information you receive regarding the "cleansing" drinks. I could see them being a pile of electrolytes in a liquid solution, and nothing more. Many of these expensive gimmick kits contain little more than a vitamin solution, some information on what to eat, and the notion of fasting.
The Isagenix 9-Day Cleanse For Life Program
On the 9-Day Program the average weight loss is 7 pounds. The first 48 hours on the 9-Day Cleanse are very exciting! During this time you will experience a reduction in cravings while your body will be cleansing. Toxins that accumulate in your body cause premature aging and make it difficult to lose weight. Cleansing helps your body to burn fat. It also allows your body to absorb vitamins and minerals more effectively to keep you young and healthy. Cleansing is key to optimal digestion, weight loss and efficient metabolism. The 9-Day Program includes:
* 2 Bottles of Fast Start Mineral Drink (Berry or Tropical)
* 1 Bottle Isagenix Accelerator Capsules
* 1 Bottle Isagenix Snacks (Chocolate or Vanilla)
* 1 Canister (14 Meals) IsaLean Shakes (Chocolate or Vanilla)
* 1 Measuring Tape
* CD and Program Instructions.
Essentially vitamin/mineral drinks, Meal Replacement Shakes, and lipotropic herb capsules.
Net Loss: Water Weight, LBM.

Bustmybutt April 11th, 2005, 12:47 AM betastas, good work! Yes fasting does utilize some muscle mass, but I did not lose much in 11 days, if any at all. Yes, I lost weight, and have been able to maintain it and still drop a couple of pounds.
I do eat right and live a healthy life, however, I did not always do so. I have done auto body work with no respirator, among some of the dumbass things I have done.
ANy sort of calorie restirction will cause muscle loss. I have been training for a long time, and have ample muscle mass, and am not worried about losing some of it. I am a woman that can build muscel very easily. I know for men, they do not want to sacrifice muscle mass for anything. My husband to be is a body builder and I know all about it. I used to bodybuild myself and know how it all works. I want a softer look for this year, and even with the fast, I did not get it. I look even more ripped and the muscle definition is showing.
I know this Isagenix kit is not what all people want to do, but I am willing to give it a try, since it is free. It beats the fast I completed by far. I learned what true hinger is about, and I had all sorts of nasty stuff coming out of me during the fast. I would do it again, if I did not have this kit coming to try out. I like experimenting, for the betterment of myself.
My girlfriend eats like a pig and drinks like a sailor, and she maintained her weight. It should be easy for me, since I practice proper eating and I do not drink or eat any junk at all. She does not exercise either, and it blows my mind this product works for her. She is also not flabby and looks great. Everything I have done was with my body kicking and screaming all the way.
I know many people do not like the idea of fasting. I did not either. However, now that I tried it, it really was beneficial to me. I feel much better and look much better to boot. It was hard as hell to not eat, especially when I still cooked for hubby to be.
Thanks for the info. I will keep you posted about the progress. I would never expect anyone to buy it, that it for sure. However, I am curious by nature, and am willing to try it since it is free.
betastas April 11th, 2005, 12:59 AM Excellent. Looks like I was tooting my horn for naught. Your friend sounds genetically gifted. Ectomorph perhaps? It's good that you know your stuff, you sound like you've got it going for you. Let us know how it works for you, and if it's recommended for others who would want to try a fast.
Bustmybutt April 12th, 2005, 01:36 AM Well I received my kit today. I am LMAO. What a friggen joke. This is the dumbest thing I have ever seen, and I am so damned glad I did not pay for this. I will do the stupid thing for the nine days, and see what transpires. I can't believe this company can make so much money. I guess this is a good product for people with food addictions and such. However, I am very disciplined with diet when the need is there, and I feel no need for stuff like this.
My friend actually did have a weight problem prior to this product and she lost 32 pounds using it, and will never be without it. However, everyone is different, and I can't see this doing anything for me. I am not allowed to weight train during the nine days on this product, but I might just do it anyways.
If this knocks ten pounds off, and I can maintain it (which I know I can), I am laughing. I am not a big food person, and even after I came off of an 11 day fast, I still still eat small amounts, and have not gained. I actually lost a couple of pounds since stopping.
I will keep you posted, I start tomorrow morning, and it will be a breeze. I love the fact that I get to be a critic of this product, since I say things how they are.
vatechguy April 12th, 2005, 08:18 AM ISOGenics is a kit with a ridiculous negative failure routine that no normal person in their right mind could have ever followed. It was however, fun to read. It used to come with a whole 'kit' of supplements from GNC that included an EC stack, some whey MRPs and a little tiny workout book with the directions.
Just sounded like they may be from same company?
Bustmybutt April 12th, 2005, 11:14 PM I did not know GNC sold the same sort of stuff. I have to say the cleansing drink tastes like ass (well, what I think ass would taste like). I started it today, and it is not big deal. I did an 11 day master cleanse, which is not eating a thing. I can do this standing on my head easily.
I am committed now, but my hubby to be and I laughed our guts out over the whole thing. I am sure glad I did not pay for it, that's for sure. It is pretty difficult for some people, I know that, however, I won't have a problem, and have nothing to lose.

JeremyLikness April 13th, 2005, 12:21 AM I do not know the Isagenix products specifically. The company that I partner with has a cleanse kit. It was developed not from voo-doo mumbo jumbo, but by scientists and doctors with extensive experience.
For example, Dr. Ray Strand, who was my wife's physician, has been a physician for decades and specializes in working with people who have developed insulin resistance through becoming overweight and obese. He has programs that I have referred people to myself because they last several years and help people lose hundreds of pounds of weight. They are not designed to turn people into bodybuilders or grow huge muscles, but to have an enjoyable lifestyle that allows them to lose weight and live healthy.
I understand the concern with muscle mass and fasting. However, almost all of the arguments use the logic ... you will lose muscle mass ... your metabolism will slow ... etc. This backs into the assumption that it is better to have more muscle, and better to have a faster metaoblism. I'm not sure I agree. I enjoy eating a lower calorie diet that is rich with fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc. I might not be reaching my muscle maximum potential, but if I am healthy and have strong joints (I believe strength and flexibility to be far more important than sheer mass) then I am satisfied. I read constantly about people who survive hardships due to having a slow metabolism, so again, I think the notion of a faster metabolism being healthier is more a byproduct of our consumptive society "Hey build muscle and you can eat more."
So, I am a fan of fasting. I have fasted on nothing but water, juice fasted, and done other things as well. I do not believe these necessarily purge physical gunk out of my body, but I do believe they purge a lot of cravings and urges and help me reset my focus. My faith is what has led me where I am both in fitness and in my business, so I tend to have a view of looking beyond the calories and metabolic rate into the deeper, underlying reasons and issues.
But all of that aside, I have used the cleanse as an effective tool. I don't need opinions about them, because I've witnessed them work so obviously they serve a benefit to certain people. I have used them myself. I don't approach the cleanse as a method of removing physical junk, but as a means to stabilize blood sugar and insulin response. Getting back to the doctors/scientists who developed this ... the whole idea is based upon a clinic they established that focuses on alternative methods to address sickness and ailments. There are many people who spend quite a bit of money to go to this clinic to be treated for cancer, leukemia, and other illnesses. It is outside the scope of this discussion, but if you want to learn more about the clinic, which is in Mexico, you can go here:
www.sanoviv.com
The idea is to provide a balance of protein, healthy fats, fiber, and carbs that maintains blood sugar and stops the roller coaster most people experience. For example, I had a client who just could not control her cravings. She'd try to eat balanced and just kept breaking down. After doing a 5-day cleanse, she benefitted not from the weight loss, which is mainly water weight, but from the fact that after the cleanse was over, she no longer had the cravings. She was able to move to the nutrition plan she was trying to stick with, and went on to lose another 56 pounds at last count.
So, this is not to market the cleanse I have, because I have worked with many different types of cleanses (I enjoy ours because many cleanses are restrictive - i.e. juice fast, etc, whereas ares is balanced with protein, carbs, fat, and fiber, and encourages those on it to eat more if they are hungry, so it is not focused on starvation) ... and the key here is not to look at it as flushing out toxins, at least in my opinion, but rather a method to break free from a cycle.
There are of course those who say, "so eat clean." I agree ... if you can make that decision, do it. They will say, "People are too weak-willed." Perhaps. But to see a woman after having three children over three years in tears of frustration after trying to lose weight and not being able to stick with, suddenly go through a phase that empowered her to finally get it right, I would feel ashamed for anyone to want to take that away from her.
So, it will be interesting to hear your experience with this, but I have had several clients who have reported tremendous benefits from doing a cleanse ... and understand this is not always a cleanse with products. I've had some work with raw foods or juice fasts and others work with simply eliminated processed carbs from their diet for a period of time, etc. The idea is to get out of the carbohydrate/fat/sugar addiction so they can focus on the long term benefits of a healthier nutrition program.

Bustmybutt April 13th, 2005, 02:31 AM Hey Jeremy, glad to see somoene else fasts. The Master cleanse was my first fast, and although it was hard, I made it. I feel so much better, and cannot believe the stuff that was coming out of my body. The end results are, I lost a few pounds, and I have really hard muscles. I also was getting ill after eating, no matter what it was, or how light it was to eat. Anything bloated me and made me feel lethargic. I still did not eat much after the cleanse, since I really do not want anything to do with meat for the time ceing. I just love my soups and salads for now.
The Isagenics program was invented by doctors as well. I am just a skeptic since it is a product of a multi level marketing company. I am resentful of things like personally. It is also very costly for the average person. However, the distributor believes so strongly in the product, he paid for it. If I like the results, I pay for it afterwards. It was an offer I could not refuse. I loved the results of the master cleanse, so I wanted to try this as well.
I will always fast at least twice a year now with the master cleanse. It did amazing things for me, inside and out. I don't get much support from people, since not eating is supposed to be a bad thing. I noticed I had plenty of energy on the master cleanse, and really had no problems, aside of cooking meals for hubby to be. He would never do this, since he worries about muscle mass being lost. For me, muscle mass, as miniscule as it is, is a fair trade off for the end results.
I am hoping the Isagenics product is a good one. However, we all know how flooded the market is with miracle products. This might just be yet another gimmick, like all the rest of them. I will keep you posted of my progress.
JeremyLikness April 13th, 2005, 11:55 AM I'm always curious why people are so slow to accept multi-level marketing as a mainstream business practice ... did you have a bad experience?
It's very interesting to see the public backlash on pyramids and scams.
It is interesting to me because those people buy goods and services from companies like AT&T, Sprint, Whirlpool, and other companies that use multi-level marketing as a distribution model.
In fact, if you are leery of products because they are distributed by multi-level marketing, then you must draw into question all of these:
Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, RCA, JVC, Sharp, Emerson, Champion, Adidas, Sprint, AT&T, Whirlpool, OfficeMax, and more ...
... because they all use it as a distribution model!
It's also interesting because I've had people go from slamming multi-level marketing to talking about the stock market and investments. I know several MLM companies that have been publicly traded for years and are having phenomenal success with their stocks.
This is probably hijacking the thread, so I'll cut it short, but franchising was almost outlawed by the government because it was seen as an illegal scam because it was "too easy" for someone to put up a business. There are obviously right ways and wrong ways to do business. It is my opinion that MLM gets a bad wrap not because the distribution model is wrong, but because it is too easy to get started. At least with franchises, you have to invest several thousand up to millions. With an MLM, you can get started for less than $100 with some companies, so probably too many people commit looking to get rich quick and then give up without trying how to learn to run a real business, and resort to under the table tactics like promising the world to recruit ... then bad mouth the industry when it doesn't work for them.
That's just my take, but I'm biased because I am successful with MLM and have a satisfied, successful team. (I laugh about the pyramid thing, though - people say the people at the top make all of the money, when in fact what they are really describing is a corporation ... in a corporation, it's worse, because to climb the corporate pyramid, you have to oust someone from the position above you .... in MLM, I consistently out-earn people who started before or "above" me, because it is the opposite of a pyramid and pays what value YOU provide, rather than in a job where you are paid the value of the job.
... but back to the cleanse ... I look forward to seeing your progress!

jbob April 13th, 2005, 06:46 PM I skipped through all these replies, so I hope im not making a tard of myself, oops, too late.
I did this "diet" cleans crap.
I was a mess afterwords, and the worse part of it is that I spent 100.00 on that damn kit.
I do use the natural accellerators and have a shake every so often.
My advice is to stay away from that 9 day fast crap.
Bustmybutt April 14th, 2005, 12:29 AM Thanks for the insight jbob. It is too late, and I started, so I am going to finish it. I am skeptical, but you never know, since every person is different.
What happened to you?
jbob April 14th, 2005, 02:39 AM Thanks for the insight jbob. It is too late, and I started, so I am going to finish it. I am skeptical, but you never know, since every person is different.
What happened to you?
What happens when you deprive your system of real food for 9 days?
No energy, lathargic, and nothing to show for it other than a metabolism that was slowed down drastically becuase my body was in starvation mode. after I finished the 9 day program, I ended up gaining 10 pounds in about 30 days with NO CHANGE from my previous diet.
I know the stuff is good, but that nine day program blows.
Bustmybutt April 14th, 2005, 12:27 PM I am not experiencing any lethargy or anything. I did a 11 day Master cleanse and finshed it over a week ago. I ate absolutely nothing, and felt pretty darned good.
I am on my third day of Isagenix, and am doing fine. Today I get one meal and two meal replacements. I am not very impressed with this program, but I will finish it, since I started it. Well I guess I should not say I am unimpressed, but the meal replacements shakes can be bought any where, and for less money. My hubby to be has better meal replacements that taste better! I do think the cleansing drinks are good for you, since they are PACKED with nutrients. However, I really do not know how good they are. Of course you will drop weight in the first couple of days. I now stalled, but expected it. I am hoping to drop five pounds in the week I have left. I have my doubts, but you never know.
I don't know what the acelerator capsules are all about, but I feel nothing from them. I guess that might be a good thing.
Sorry you have bad luck with the stuff.
