View Full Version : Hair Loss and Diet correlation
super_supreme_please April 10th, 2005, 07:09 AM hi all
3 months ago i've started Atkins Diet and lost 20 kg.
I was 105.8 @ 4th of January
now I'm 85.5 and I'm planning to go down 75
my diet was pretty rough and altough I guess I have eating disorder , while i was dieting , there were days I was eating 2-3 apples or 100 grams of fish..(but mostly I ate like everyone else , only no bread or sugary things..)
anyway I look better now and so I don't care :)
BUT there's a problem which makes me very unhappy
for 3 weeks I've noticed that I'm losing hair very fast. I think it's because of diet
any men here , has ever noticed hair loss while / after diet?
if you have suggestions, that'd be appreciated
thanks
reanimated838uk April 10th, 2005, 07:51 AM could it be attributed to the atkins?
Hort April 10th, 2005, 09:23 AM Here's what Atkins (http://atkins.com/helpatkins/newfaq/answers/IVeNoticedSomeHairLossWhileIVeBeenDoingAtkins.html ) says on the subject.
A quick google (http://www.low-carb-diet-recipes.com/phpBB2/post-566.html) found many people complaining about the same thing though.
bisous April 10th, 2005, 10:53 AM Yuor hair has three phases of growth - at the end of a final phase it will fall out (and hopefully be replaced by another new hair). There have been times in my life where I was literally too busy to eat or sleep much for a couple of months on end. At the end of those times, and for a few weeks after, I would end up with lots and lots of hair coming out. Never went bald or anything - just thinned out the crop. It happens to sick people when they are severely stressed, or when you have an extremely high fever. It's pretty clear in these situations that the stress of not enough calories/illness causes the hair to switch prematurely to the final stage of its growth cycle and then fall out.
super_supreme_please April 10th, 2005, 11:46 AM whoooooah!
from this moment atkins diet is over!
thanks for the link
jasoniscool April 11th, 2005, 01:46 AM if atkins causes hair loss, then id rather be fit and bald than fat and have hair
Mooshie April 11th, 2005, 01:54 AM if atkins causes hair loss, then id rather be fit and bald than fat and have hair
Man, I feel completely opposite. I have this overwhelming and complete fear of going bald. My father is bald and I know how it makes you look. The moment I started losing my hair I'd just go ahead and shave it all off.
reanimated838uk April 11th, 2005, 03:21 AM id rather stay on a balanced diet and keep my hair.
I'm with Mooshie on the losing hair bit. Growing mine long at the moment but as soon as I lose the rest of the fat, i'm shaving it all off.
Timbermiko April 11th, 2005, 03:29 AM I thought about this a year ago. Although i wasn't on atkins i was cutting good (or Bad). I noticed my hair looked thinner. I too got a little freaked. Anyway, i thought it may be the way my hair was cut.? :p
don_1987 April 11th, 2005, 07:52 AM I choose to be lean, fit, healthy and with a lot of hairs. Thick, if I may choose
No really, skip any fad/unbalanced diets and follow a healthy, nutritious and sensible diet plan you can live with the rest of your lives. It hopefully will give you a lean body and other healthy features as a bonus :tu:

How are your healthy fats? Nuts, olive oil, natty PB, avoacados are all good ways to boost calories a little. Avocados are supposed to be good for the hair too. Really, a healthy cutting diet filled with good lean protein, fruits and veggies, and healthy fats and a good multivitamin should not increase hair loss.
super_supreme_please April 11th, 2005, 05:11 PM "........Alternatively, you might be low in some specific nutrients that could affect your hair loss. You might try adding biotin, N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), glutathione and lecithin to your diet. If excessive hair loss occurs, see your doctor........."
atkins site says to add these to diet
lecithin is in Egg
but what about others
never heard about them
Quadzilla April 11th, 2005, 06:42 PM I find I lose hair in clumps during cutting. But it I take a lot of flaxseed oil or Omega-3 oil (e.g. Udo's) it stops it within a couple of days. I take the equivalent of 6 caps per day.
jsbrook April 13th, 2005, 06:18 PM i hate myself
i used to be fat
that problem fixed
now I'm going bald!
why can't I have O.K body!?????
fck... :(
i just itched my hair
and i've lost lotssssss of hair just with itching
i hate this!
????? Itching? What? Take it easy, and take a deep breath. First go off Atkins. There's plenty of healthy ways to lose fat and keep it off that will allow you to get the vitamins and minerals you need (for hair and otherwise). What multi do you take? Also, if it really bothers you that much, you might want to consider propecia.
EDIT-I see you've gone off Atkins. That's good.
