View Full Version : Skin problem (also IM NEW!)
guerrillaradio April 9th, 2005, 02:23 AM Hello! I’ve been reading a lot of stuff on the internet about healthy ways of living for a while. About 3 months ago I decided to change my lifestyle and lead a healthy life. A few days ago I came about this forum, and I have finally joined. I would like your help, with education, and motivation. Now to my story.
I was a skinny little kid up until age 11, where I discovered fast food (big no-no). I also was diagnosed with ADHD, so as usual I was put on medication to “slow me down”. I have a feeling that this really screwed up my metabolism, resulting in my weighing 220lbs by the age of 13. Somewhere between 14-15, I made the choice of taking myself off of the pills. I am newly 16, weighing in at 145-150. I have a dream of looking the best I possibly can, and I’ve gone through changes people never thought possible of me. I lost my fat, which is a good thing. But the downside of it all is that I have loose skin. I don’t think it went back to shape while I lost weight. My metabolism is sky high, so I can eat a crap load of food and, well you get the idea. I don’t have a gut, but instead I have a belly of loose skin hanging. Just to give you an idea, when I do push-ups, it hangs lower than my ding-a-ling. My inner arms are also stretched out. I can pull the skin from my armpit and actually lick it.
Height: 5’ 6
Weight: 150
My plan is to get lean and grow muscle and all of that jazz, but I need some one to help me out, there is no one here to look to. Blah… Does someone here care?
I love this smilie!! :jumping:
Mooshie April 9th, 2005, 02:51 AM You are very candid with your descriptions! Do you lick your armpit skin often?

With anything, I need help charting out a diet plan, and weight lifing plans and such. Just help me out a little, I'm willing to go the extra 5 miles, if not, 10.
Hort April 9th, 2005, 08:38 AM How fast and how recently did you lose the weight? Skin is pretty resilient- but it may take some time to recover.

I'm not sure. When I first noticed it, I'd say about 9 months?
I'm screwed

Have you tried the stretch mark cream? They have it in the preggo aisle or baby section in Walgreens etc. It help skin snap back into shape by giving more elasticity.

Eh I read about some, but I can't find any that you say, "giving more elasticity."

Looks good, but the others just gun it down... ehhh... :(
Could it go back to normal as I gain height? I'm only 16 after all...
vatechguy April 9th, 2005, 09:48 PM If you lost a bunch of weight in nine months just work out with the weights and give it some time.
My wife had three kids and she can vouch that those creams don't do squat. (And I've lost almost a hundred pounds - tried em too - dont work)
The only thing that works is your body realizing you dont need that skin anymore and it will pull it in slowly but surely. Keep working out and getting rid of the layer of fat that clings desperately to the underside of the skin - after another year you'll notice it pulling in.
Plus - like you said - you're only 16 - you still got some growin to do anyway. ;)

Yay! There is hope after all
I've been told that I'd have to get plastic surgery or something but now that I've heard this, I have 150% self-esteem :claplow:
suvgrrrl33va April 10th, 2005, 08:31 AM The amount of skin you have sounds extreme - but I would definately let your body do it's thing - follow a healthy diet and keep up the exercise - if my 30-something body can get rid of flapping skin - yours definately will!! And as for any doc that would do plastic surgery on your still adolescent body - I suggest you RUN not walk from their office - you can scream the whole way to for effect if you want but just get out! :gl:

The majority of people who say this kind of thing are simply not willing to do the work it takes to get rid of it. We live in a hurry-up society so everyone thinks stuff like this happens overnight.
I'll bet money you didn't gain all that weight (and the side effect of the extra skin to hold it all in) in nine months. SO when you drop the fat that fast - your body has to realize its gone "whoa! Why do I have all this excess skin?" As long as you keep the wieght off and keep working to rid whats left under there - eventually your body realizes its something it doesn't need and will essentially STOP replicating those extra skin cells. I still have some stretchy skin cells - but if my body wasn't pulling it in some I should have skin hanging down towards my knees - and I don't. (I also have quite a few pounds still clinging desperately to my midsection - but those will be gone too in time  )
My challenge for anyone who disagrees it to find me one of these alleged folks who simply had excess skin - show me a body fat test where they truely were under 10% for any lenght of time before having the surgery. No plastic surgeon who recommends this kind of thing can show me one either.
My favortie example of how sad we are as a society is the new Progressive Insurance commercial with the middle-aged guy in the gym who's weighing himself in the gym - then he bolts off the scale, runs around the gym one time and comes back and weighs himself again. The scale is the same and he gets all mad.
The sad thing is that even though progressive is doing it as a joke - walk through any magazine aisle in america and I bet you can count at least 10 different magazine about "health" that have something to the effect of "HOW TO GET ABS FAST" on the cover. And everyone here at JSF knows how 'fast' you can build up visible abs right?
Chameleon April 11th, 2005, 05:53 PM the best things to help reduce loose skin are:
excercise (as already said)
proper hydration - make sure your drinking enough water
lotion - ANY kind, although I prefer Palmers Cocoa Butter (the regular one)
and TIME (already said)
these are in no particular order.. although hydration is a big one... drink lots and lots of water ;)

For you, that "extra 10 miles" means patience. You may be surprised how difficult it is to exercise the amount of patience you will need to wait out your body's natural process of getting rid of that excess skin. It will not be overnight.
