I'm starting a bulk next Monday. I was planning to have a 300 calorie PWO shake of dex and whey, the same amount of calories as most of my other meals. But is their a benefit to having a larger PWO shake?

With only 300 calories per meal while bulking are you eating 10 times a day?

I recently started taking a weight gainer after my workouts, and so far it's worked very well.

It's 970 calories per serving, 50g of protein, 152g of carbs, and 18g of fat. I no longer feel tired after my workouts, and taking the gainer has increased my energy levels, where before all I wanted to do after my PWO shake was sleep.

It has also helped my up my calorie intake while bulking, and it tastes delicious. Throughout the day, I take protein isolate.

 some of the meals will be 400 calories. Not 10 times a day, but I'm planning to eat quite often. upping the number of meals from the 5-6 I'm eating now. chang, what's your calore total? how many meals?

I started off around 3000 calories, increased by about 200 calories each week. Right now I'm at 4000 calories per day, aiming for 40/40/20, and hitting it consistently. I eat anywhere from 6-8 meals per day, and I am never hungry. My gains are really good right now, I'm gaining about 2lbs per week, although they have slowed down a bit recently, that's why I started taking the gainer. I don't think I'll up my calories more than 4500. I think once the gains start slowing down, I'm going to have to switch something in my routine. I'm not doing any cardio at all right now, but I think once I hit around 175 or 180lbs(I'm at 170lbs right now, was 145lbs when I started 2 months ago) I'll probably start a maintenance phase.

I'm regretting not having started a journal, or even taking before and after pics. But beleive me, everybody around me is noticing my gains. I got one friend interested in bulking now, because he was so impressed by my gains.

I'm taking creatine as well, I did a loading phase. I did 20g/day for the first 5 days, broke up into 5g doses throughout the day. And right now I am just taking 5g/day, mixed in with my gainer PWO shake. I am also taking glutamine, I take 5g mixed in with my PWO shake, and 5g mixed with a protein isolate shake before bed. As far as the shakes go, I have around 3-4 protein isolate shakes/day, and 1 gainer shake a day. So, I get around 200g of my daily protein from shakes.

Edit: Oh, I also forgot to add, I'm following MAX-OT, 5 day split. I love it.

Chang,

I would take a look at this calculator (http://www.room42.com/nutrition/basal.shtml) , use it as a guide
I would think 3000 cals per day should be more than enough for your weight and age.
My current weight is 215 lbs and i continue to 'bulk' at less than 3000 cals per day.
Just a suggestion, i wouldn't want to see you put on fat ;)
Remember the best stimulation for growing muscle is the training not the eating.

Thanks for the input everyone. Yes-I want to start out with moderate calories and see how it goes before jumping too high. I'll gradually continue to add so long as the gains continue to be 90% muscle. I'm also planning a 5 day Max-OT split. Special Bear, I'm happy with the whey and dex combination. I wouldn't want to get rid of the dex. I like how fast acting it is for the insulin spike. I eat a meal 45 minutes later. I plan to leave the dex, but I'd consider adding in some oats to the shake though if there's a benefit. What does everyone think?

Thanks guys. I was planning to stick with dex and whey since I have a large amount of each right now. But I'll consider Surge and Mass Maker for the future. I had been planning to do 55g of dex and a scoop of whey. But maybe I'll bump up the portions on both of your suggestions. Kino, your sugestions would be a 600 calorie PWO instead of a 300. I do eat a whole foods meal 45 minutes later, but I guess I could still work this in and still meet my macro and calorie goals. Why do you prefer half maltodextrin rather than all dextrose?

I have all of the items I suggested in my closet. The Dex/Malt/Whey came from a Post W/O suggestion on ABC Bodybuilding (http://www.abcbodybuilding.com/windowofopportunity.php). I was just throwing you more ideas. I typically stick with SURGE, Mass Maker or Dext/Whey.
Sorry I didn't give you all the details. I've been kind of tired of typing in forums, and have been just reading more lately. I'll go back to sitting quietly on the sideline...

No problem. Thanks for the input. I ordered some malto. I'm gonna give the combo a try-at the very least, it's a change from just dextrose, and maybe it will yield superior results. I understand about getting a little tired of posting in the forums. I've posted a lot since I've joined. They are a great resource though. I've gotten several good pieces of advice since joining. (like this one). And I like helping others, especially the newbies. Don't stop posting completely. You have some good knowledge and tips!
