View Full Version : Does Whey Protein make you gain weight? please help, got question
robg March 28th, 2005, 12:42 PM I'm trying to lose 15 pounds in 14 weeks and was going to incorporate some ON whey protein (2 scoops in morning, 2 scoops after workout in afternoon) since I plan on lifting 3 days, and doing cardio for 4 days
2 scoops morning = 220 calories, 3g fat, 6g carbs, 46g protein
2 scoops post workout = 220 calories, 3g fat, 6g carbs, 46g protein
so altogether 440 calories, 6g fat, 12g carbs, 92g protein everyday
the bottom of the box says "NOTICE: USE THIS PRODUCT AS A FOOD SUPPLEMENT ONLY. DO NOT USE FOR WEIGHT REDUCTION".
does this mean if i take it i will gain weight? that's what one of my friends said to me. i will be lifting 3 days a week and cardio 4 days. i dont want to gain weight, so i hope you guys can help me :(

williamso March 28th, 2005, 01:44 PM Whey protein is just protein. It is a protein supplement. It is not magic powder, it is not muscle builder, it is not weird chemicals, it is just protein. The only nutritional difference between protein powder and tuna (or chicken, or [fill in the blank with other foods mostly protein]) is that protein powder will be digested quickly. Your stomach does not need to break it down, hell, it's already broken down, so it gets into your system fast -- that's why many use it right before, or after a workout.
If you need more protein in your diet than you can eat from tuna, chicken, nuts, beans, etc., then take some whey powder. It can be a healthy part of a good diet, but generally speaking, it will not do things that tuna won't do.

Methodx March 28th, 2005, 03:33 PM It will only make you fat if it is more calories than you need, just like carbs or fat or ice cream or granola or whatever.
Just make sure you don't eat too many calories (around 10 - 12 per pound if you are cutting) and try to do 40/40/20. If you do that (while doing cardio) you will lose weight.

If you want to incorporate 440 calories of protein powder into a weight loss diet, you must find a place to reduce your daily calories elsewhere by 440 calories. Some people would rather have a protein shake than a bowl of spaghetti, because they think the additional protein is beneficial. Personally, I feel that replacing the spaghetti or potatoes with tuna or turkey is more satisfying and filling.

why would 440 calories of protein make me gain weight? i added up all my calories from the protein and other foods and they are not enormous (around 1750). are you saying protein has something in it that magically makes you gain weight?

Of course not.
I'm saying if you ADD 440 calories to your diet, you'll gain weight. Doesn't matter if it's protein, carbs, fat, or alcohol.
If you want to ADD protein powder to your diet, you'll need to SUBTRACT the additional calories from another place in your diet if you want to lose weight.

um still dont know what you mean by this subtracting additional calories from another place. after i factor in the protein shake and regular meals i'm eating throughout the day, the TOTAL calories for the whole day comes out to 1700 calories (including the 440 from protein). are you trying to say i need to subtrade 440 from 1700? i dont understand. thats 1260 calories...

What is being said is...If you have a diet of 1700 calories planned out and then you add 440 more in whey protien then YES you will gain weight. So the suggestion is to remove 400 calories from the 1700 in food and replace it with the whey so you stay at 1700.

If you've already calculated that your total calories for the day are 1700 including the protein, and if you're reasonably sure that 1700 calories will put you at a caloric deficit, then the protein powder will NOT cause you to gain weight.
Protein powder doesn't make you gain or lose weight, just like tuna doesn't make you gain or lose weight.

I may be wrong here, but you're getting 24% of your calories from whey powder -- that's really high. The calorie numbers work out good, yes, but there is much more to nutrition than just calories. I would suggest reducing the whey powder intake -- not for weight gain or weight loss reasons, but for your other nutritional needs. Vitamins, Minerals, Fiber, etc.

well i'm eating green beans / green peppers / lettuce / cucumbers / tomatoes everyday as far as vegtables as well as taking one multivitamin.... i guess i can increase the amounts of those..

Oh -- that sounds good. I don't need to to beat up on you, just a recommendation to watch those non-calorie nutrients, too. So many people get caught up in the calories, and forget that the body needs more than just calories. Otherwise, we could all just take a pill every 2 hours that had all the calories in the right quantities.
