View Full Version : how many nuts is to many?
smellie Tue, March 15th, 2005, 12:56 PM When ever i get cravings during the day, I usually grab a hard boiled egg or stick of cheese to get me through it and on to my next meal. Sometimes though i use nuts to fill this void, and find myself eating more than i assume i should.
I typically stick with cooked almonds or walnuts, and find that i start to eat them and before i know it ive had a few handfulls
i guess what im asking is can eating to many nuts be a problem, and turn them into a bad food
krosspyder Tue, March 15th, 2005, 01:10 PM good question... i do the same thing.. though im guessing i dont grab as much as you... i also usually go to cottage cheese and start eating a little bit from that.
angel_slh07 Tue, March 15th, 2005, 01:22 PM Nuts are really really good for you...a mix of fiber, carb, protein and heart healthy fat. They are also VERY calorically dense. Personally, I measure out a serving (about 1/4 c.) to keep the portions in check. I, too, will consume them by the handful if I don't watch it. I'm not sure what your ideal calorie intake is during the day. They can be included in a clean and healthy diet, but try to be aware of how much you eat. On the upside, if you need a lot of calories during the day but find it hard to stomach lots of food, nuts are a great way to get lots of calories in without feeling stuffed. At one point in my life I was very underweight, and my nutritionist had me eating nuts and nutbutters like crazy to pack on some pounds. Moderation is key, depending on your goals!
smellie Tue, March 15th, 2005, 01:31 PM Im just starting to work out again, and have not set up a meal plan or program as of yet. Im going to start this week just getting used to eating better, smarter, and healthier, then next week I plan on starting my program to get into shape again.
thanks for the replies, I think I am going to have to start measuring out serving sizes and sticking to that as part of my deit, because if not then i dont know how many i have had by the end of my snack.
also though are there other nuts anybody would recomend, i know almonds and walnuts are good, and to stay away from penuts, but what about chewing on sunflower seeds? they are very small so i cant see them being a problem.
and one last thing, anybody tried almond butter as opposed to PB. I can get the natural stuff from smuckers at my local grocery store but they do not carry amlond butter and i was wondering if this was so much better that I should search it out
kmfisher Tue, March 15th, 2005, 01:38 PM 1 serving of almonds is 22 pieces or so and weighs in at 170 calories. When I'm bulking, I have 4 servings per day. When I'm cutting, I have 2.
ChipPan Tue, March 15th, 2005, 01:50 PM I get a bag of mixed nuts because I like to get a variety, i would prob have 20-30g at a time as part of a Protein + Fat meal when I'm cutting. This adds up to abt 130-195 cals (basically 65 per 10g).
They are a real staple in my diet but remember it has to all fit into your calorie intake & how much fat you are aiming for in your diet as they are pretty high on both.
Brian Golden Tue, March 15th, 2005, 02:19 PM You might want to try increasing the amount of water you drink.
Often times when you feel hungry, you're in fact dehydrated and don't realize it.
jchantelau Tue, March 15th, 2005, 02:55 PM I consume about 4 Tbsp of Natty PB a day and it has had no affect on my cutting so far.

there is nothing wrong with peanuts.. hell you'll see a ton of us on this board post that we eat natural peanut butter... it's a good nut... but just like with almonds, you need to watch how much you eat... moderation is the key ;)

Pellefant Tue, March 15th, 2005, 08:56 PM "how many nuts is to many?"
3648736483648 for sure. ;)
akm3 Tue, March 15th, 2005, 09:06 PM Suprised it hasn't been said. The correct answer is three nuts is too many. You should have two nuts.
/edit: You should have no MORE then two nuts. It is perfectly acceptable to have one if you ride a bike, or none if you have boobies.

don_1987 Wed, March 16th, 2005, 11:33 PM The ending of this threads really made me smile...
But anyway, the only thing that can hinder your progress is eating too much. Remember, you can still gain weight even though you're eating clean. So if you let yourself grab too many nuts, then eventually it'll hinder your cutting goal. For me personally, I eat 10 grams/0.35 oz of nuts per eating. How do I measure this? Simple, I buy nuts which is already packed, usually comes in sachet, plus I eat it slowly too, so I feel satisfied. I just let it sits in my mouth. especially when I'm doing nothing, it can take me 1/2 an hour to finish that sachet ;)
