View Full Version : Think you're eating better?
andi January 23rd, 2004, 03:45 PM So did I, till I sat down and actually figured out the nutritional value of my breakfast. Breakfast has always been a toughie for me, I'm an absolute creature of habit and my day just doesn't go right if I don't start with a bowl of cereal and a glass of chocolate milk. Even though I'm eating better, I haven't given up that breakfast yet. I've switched to healthier cereal and skim milk and added fruit to it, but even so these are the stats for this morning's meal:
Bowl of Multigrain Shredded Spoonfuls (Barbara's Bakery)
120 cal (15 from fat)
1.5g fat (0 sat)
0 Chol.
200mg sodium
24g carbs (4 dietary fiber, 1 soluble fiber, 3 insoluble, 5 sugar)
4g protein
(for comparison sake here are the stats on Optimum Slim, the other cereal I ate this week:
Calories: 180
Total Fat: 2.5g (0 sat)
0 Chol.
250mg sodium
38g Carbs (11 fiber, 10 sugar)
9g protein)
approx 20 oz. skim milk
200 cal (0 from fat)
0 fat
<5mg. chol.
120mg. sodium
12g carbs (11 sugar!)
8g protein
1 scoop Ovaltine
20 cal, 0 from fat
0 fat
0 chol.
140mg sodium
19g carbs (18 sugar)
<1g protein
1 banana
200 cal, 6 from fat
1g fat (0 sat)
0 chol.
2mg sodium
51g carbs (6 fiber, 28 sugar)
2g protein
That gives us a total of:
540 cal, 21 from fat
2.5g fat
<5mg. chol.
462mg sodium
106g carbs (14 fiber, 62 sugar)
14g protein
I have a lot of work to do. I think I'll go eat a chicken.
Jono January 23rd, 2004, 03:50 PM i dont know what your goals are, but nothing can beat this as a breakfast
1/2 cup oatmeal with 8 egg whites
andi January 23rd, 2004, 04:35 PM 1/2 cup oatmeal with 8 egg whites
What's the deal with egg whites anyway? What's wrong with yolks?
Jingo January 23rd, 2004, 04:51 PM the yolks are the high fat part, in terms of eggs and stuff, the yolk holds the stuff the little baby almost a chicken needs to grow into a big strong baby actually a chicken.
The whites really don't have much in them at all, but what is there is pretty good, hence people likethem a lot.
Personally i've yet to find egg white only products in the UK and i don't feel like messing around with a whole box of eggs just to get a little bit of white, i do still like whole ones tho :P
haven97 January 23rd, 2004, 04:53 PM Egg White is much healthier.... If you cant live with only whites try egg beaters they taste more like real eggs

PxT January 23rd, 2004, 07:22 PM What do you guys do with the egg whites? Can you cook them like a regular egg or what? Or do you just suck them down with a beer chaser? :)

I just scramble mine up, I'm not down with the whole "Rocky" thing!!
Collegefour January 23rd, 2004, 11:16 PM You should ALWAYS cook eggs (and egg whites)!! You are at risk for salmonella poisoning if you don't!
Mahdimael January 24th, 2004, 02:33 PM I would cook them too- the chance of salmonella is pretty small, the way that eggs are prepared to ship to stores, but it's a good idea not to take the chance anyways
Glamdring January 25th, 2004, 11:34 AM Okay, I'm going to take the plunge and ask the seemingly stupid question here.
I have enough trouble busting open an egg (see Hardee's commercial : 'Without us, some guys would starve) as it is. How does one actually get just an egg white and no yolk? :P Can you just pour it into something that separates the two?

You can do it by transferring the egg back and forth between the two shell halves, letting the whites "spill" out into the bowl below, but a much easier (and more nutritious) way to eat egg whites is to just pick up some Egg Beaters (http://www.eggbeaters.com/index.jsp). They rule. I eat them 7 days a week.
Oh, and Egg Beaters are pasteurized, so if eating eggs raw is your thing, then you don't have to worry about any health risks.
sharger January 25th, 2004, 05:12 PM Does anyone know if you can buy egg beaters in the UK?
Lindset January 25th, 2004, 05:36 PM I don't think we egg beaters (or similar products) in Norway :( Never seen 'em.. ah well..
harry.michaels February 24th, 2004, 08:38 AM Dammit! The reason I've stopped eating eggs in the morning is due to a lack of time. The thought of being able to pour egg whites out of a carton is almost heavenly and much more hygienic! Sometimes I hate the UK. :(

Honestly, that isn't really bad. There are a few improvements you could make. I would nix the Ovalitne - its all simple sugar and chemicals. And I would cut the milk down a bit - say to like 8oz only. If you haven't tried it, I might switch to soy milk (you can get it in a chocolate flavor I believe)
You could switch it up and throw in some oatmeal or meusli etc. But overall, you are looking pretty balanced.

I agree with that. That's what I eat. The oatmeal is a little bland, but it's no big deal :tucool:
mcpub February 24th, 2004, 12:04 PM The Yolk is the most nutritous part of the egg. But if you want a good tool for separating:

Bunko February 24th, 2004, 03:38 PM I just tried eggbeaters for the first time recently. The funny thing is I think they taste better than real eggs. :)
Eggs can have that strange "raw" taste sometime even after cooked. Eggbeters did not have any funny side- or aftertaste. And with that yellowish color (long live beta carotene  ) it even looks natural.
BillS February 24th, 2004, 06:31 PM At most stores here you can buy egg whites in the same type packaging (like a milk carton) as egg beaters. I'm wondering if those in UK and Europe might have better luck finding something like that instead of egg beaters..
taffer February 24th, 2004, 06:40 PM i've just recently added egg whites to my diet, i do what john said to do (transfering them between the shell halves, it works well, but can get a bit messy :)
1 question i do have about egg's, is it ok to eat them with whey protein, will it slow down the absorbtion of the whey?
cos right now i eat them pre-workout, but since im replacing 1/2scoop of whey with 4 egg whites(cos 1 scoop of whey makes me sick) i figured i should have them PWO (thats when i have my whey) but dont want to affect the effect of the whey!
i hope that makes sence !
