View Full Version : Try this sammich
Hort February 26th, 2005, 04:29 PM 2 slices Ezekial 9 grain bread or grain-laden whole grain sandwhich roll or bun.
4 oz quality lean, medium-rare roast beef (a better grade from the deli like Usingers, Baor's head, etc)
red onion, sliced thin
roasted red pepper (canned, like Mancini's for example) or roast your own.
1 T non or low-fat blue cheese dressing or if you prefer, 1 oz fresh blue cheese
Preheat oven to broil-
saute the red onion in a little olive oil until not quite carmelized; very soft.
Bread + meat + a couple strips of pepper + some onions + blue cheese
Broil open-faced just till browning or cheese melts... top with other slice/bun top...
It's really pretty simple and pretty healthy if you keep the portions reasonable.
Using the Ezekial 9 grain I can get here, the stats are about:
424 calories
42% protein, 38% carb 19% fat

Ovens have two settings, Bake and Broil. Baking something is usually slower and heats from the bottom of the oven. Broiling something is usually faster and heat it directed from the top. If you tried to Broil a cake it would burn the top and not be done in the middle. Make sense?

I think grilling is cooking on grill, but I have heard people say BBQ.
I think BBQ is a sauce you use when grilling..... Weird huh? :confused:

btimby March 1st, 2005, 05:08 PM Grilling means to use a grill, the heat comes from charcoal or propane from BENEATH the food. To me, BBQ is a subset of grilling in which you use a particular type of sauce. Of course, you don't always have to grill to make BBQ, sometimes you cook on the stove, or smoke as someone pointed out. Broiling is different altogether. The heat comes from the TOP, it is good for sandwiches, or something with cheese on top.
Broiling also usually just heats the ouside, and does not bake something. Alot of foods, I will bake first (to thoroughly cook) and then broil (to put the finishing touches on it). If you grilled a sandwich, you would just burn the bread! If you BBQ'd a sandwich, you would have a savory, sauce covered, burned sandwich! Broiling affects the inside of the sandwich (provided it is open) and directs alot of heat at it to get it ready quick. A broiled sandwich is a wonderful thing.
And Hort, I will try your sandwich, it sounds awesome!
Hort March 1st, 2005, 11:13 PM Just made it again tonight and I'd recommend two alterations: when you've almost finished carmelizing the onions, add in a little balsamic vinegar. Serve with a whole grain mustard (left the peppers out this time).

btimby March 6th, 2005, 04:32 PM Excellent! I got to the store today, and made your sammich. I did the balsamic vinegar, no roasted red peppers version. It was quite tasty.
I could not find fat free or low fat bleu cheese (which I prefer to dressing), but the regular kind was very tasty :-).

In my neck of the woods (the south) we usually do say BBQ to mean grill :D

And, yeah... red peppers are just capsicum.

Not in this case. I meant red BELL peppers, roasted, skins removed. It's easier to buy them in a jar. Very tasty.

Technically but capsicum (two type) refers to the general family of all peppers. I shouldn't have said "not in this case" but rather: "specifically bell peppers".
Wouldn't want somebody using habenero when I meant Bell. :drool:
