For complete success your need to incorporate "smart" weight training, cardio and most importantly a sound diet. Without these three components your not going to get the most out of your quest for fitness. Combine these three principals, be consistant and dedicated and you'll surely have sucess!

I would try to get at the very least, 3 sessions of 45 minute cardio at 60% - 70% MHR (maximum heart rate). If you can, purchase a heart monitor. These have shown to be accurate and will aid you in keeping your heart rate in the target zone. I know you said your strapped for cash, but you can pick one of these up at a reasonable price if you shop around. It doesn't have to be anything fancy.

Most importantly, to be sure that you get the most out of your gym membership........be sure to use it. A lot of people have good intentions and a plan but don't have the drive or desire to make it to the gym everyday. You'll only get out of it what you put into it....so go for it! If you truly have the desire you will succeed!

Yes, do 5-6 cardio on empty stomach, also lift weights to tone up your muscles.
if you do this and follow a STRICT diet (make sure you know how many calories you must eat depending on your goals, ie. cutting or bulking etc..).
when i started i made the mistake of only doing 3 days of cardio and not worrying too much on my diet. big mistake.
