View Full Version : Which running shoes do you use?
Pellefant Wed, February 9th, 2005, 08:56 AM Hello! :)
Which running shoes do you use? (Brand and model)
How do you like them?
How much did you pay for them ?
Bluestreak Wed, February 9th, 2005, 08:58 AM Nikes, the cheaper ones (can you call a $60 pair of shoes "cheap"?), with Spenco orthotic inserts. I've worn Nikes exclusively since... jeez, before high school.

Gamecock Wed, February 9th, 2005, 09:12 AM Currently - New Balance 991 -- $115. Great cushioning, but a little heavy. Probably won't buy them again.
My favorite pair of running shoes were an older model Asics Tiger Paw $65, they are more of a race or X/C flat but they were great -- then Asics changed the design and have never been the same since.
My next pair will probably be some Nike Shox $95+ -- I have a narrow foot so Nikes, Asics and a few New Balance models fit well.
williamso Wed, February 9th, 2005, 12:32 PM New Balance, 406. $45. http://www.famousfootwear.com/product.asp?p=1006144~Athletics%7CMens&sc=ATHLETICSM&variant_id=24525
I like them, I got them mostly for the value. You can't go wrong with New Balance quality, but that's about the lowest price you'll find for a good shoe. I'm happy. I'm sure a $90 or $100 shoe would be more comfortable, but I'm still young (30 yrs old) and my joints aren't too bad yet, so it works for me.
SlowBurn Wed, February 9th, 2005, 12:52 PM I use the Brooks Adrenaline model (http://www.varunner.com/cgi-local/shop/search.cgi?keywords=on&f=result_search.html&b=a&perpage=10&sortby=none&k=adrenaline+gts). It was about $90. I bought it on a recommendation from my friend, who is an athletic trainer. He took me to a running specialty store called Virginia Runner in Fredericksburg, VA (http://www.varunner.com/). They had me run on a treadmill to see what kind of running style I have and gave me a shoe to support the way I run and the shape of my foot. It was pretty cool actually and having the right shoe can make a world of difference.
Maladroit1 Wed, February 9th, 2005, 01:37 PM New Balance, 406. $45. http://www.famousfootwear.com/product.asp?p=1006144~Athletics%7CMens&sc=ATHLETICSM&variant_id=24525

I agree with williamso. I have been wearing New Balance for years and have never had a bad pair. The important thing though is to make sure you get the right kind of shoe for you. I had a pair of Nikes once that always seemed to give me Shin Splints when I played basketball. I swithed back to New Balance and it went away.
tponti Wed, February 9th, 2005, 02:24 PM Saucony 3D Grid Triumph 2 - about $100 or so.
My feet are wide - I find this brand to be comfortable in that regard (wide enough at bottom, so doesn't pull too tight across the top where the laces are) And, I find this brand to have a nice wide sole - helps me to have a steady strike. And, they are very light.
Cziffra Wed, February 9th, 2005, 02:36 PM Agree with NB. I use 1023 which cost around 50 GBP ($75 or so). I always buy that same model, and have no intentions to change. At all.
causticmuse Wed, February 9th, 2005, 03:40 PM Mizuno Wave Mercury (http://www.roadrunnersports.com/cgi-bin/rrs/rrs/ProductPg.jsp?baseProdKey=RRMIZ299&catOID=-1073854760&BV_SessionID=@@@@1129019685.1107977554@@@@&BV_EngineID=jaddcjlhgfijbekgcgecfeedgg.0&fromClearance=true), a cushioned shoe with a bit of stability built into it. I got mine for around $60 after using a coupon code. I also have a back up pair of Mizuno Wave Precision (http://www.roadrunnersports.com/cgi-bin/rrs/rrs/ProductPg.jsp?baseProdKey=RRMIZ367&catOID=-1073854760&BV_SessionID=@@@@1129019685.1107977554@@@@&BV_EngineID=jaddcjlhgfijbekgcgecfeedgg.0&fromClearance=true) shoes that are also very nice--lighter and faster for neutral runners. RRS (http://www.roadrunnersports.com) usually has a bunch of last year's model shoes on clearance and 10%-15% off codes can be found pretty easily.
I've run in Nike, New Balance, and Asics (Gel Kayanos and Gel Nimbus), and Mizuno beats them all. I don't even need to pop in my Sorbothane insoles...the factory insoles are actually cushy enough as is. I have wider feet, medium arches, and a neutral gait with a very small amount of underpronation.

krosspyder Wed, February 9th, 2005, 03:47 PM New Balance 587.... made for flat feet. I have never had a shoe work for me till i got these shoes. At the time i was looking for shoes for people with flat feet i couldnt find any but new balance.
sox311 Wed, February 9th, 2005, 07:39 PM Asics 2090 & Nike Air Diffuse.
For about 5 years, I have been an Asics only man, until I just got the Nike's about two weeks ago. Nothing molds to your foot like the 2000 series Asics. The 1000 series are okay, but a little blocky. The 2090's I just got on sale for 80 bucks becasue the 2100's just came out.
I couldn't pass up the Nike Air Diffuse(in black, not the shown blue) when I saw them on sale for 22 dollars!! They are mesh on the outside and are very cool to run in. In fact, they are almost too cold to wear outside at this time of year when not running.
zkat Wed, February 9th, 2005, 07:45 PM Mizuno Wave Alchemy. I paid $90.00 for them and they are worth it. I always wore New Balance in the past, and never had a problem with them. I had planned on doing a lot of road running in these, so I switched it.
I have a super narrow foot and fairly high arches and these give the best support.
Ta2d Thu, February 10th, 2005, 12:11 PM Nike "Shox".
sox311 Thu, February 10th, 2005, 02:26 PM ta2d, how do you like your shox?
I tried on a pair of them once, and I didn't like the way they felt on my feet. But after wearing these Air Diffuses, I may start to give Nike shoes another try instead of only going with Asics.

New Balance M765
I didn't know i had flat-ish feet till i visited a running specialist store
Hort Fri, February 11th, 2005, 08:07 AM Heh- I have two of the pairs pictured above. I first got the New Balance M765's and like them; then a sales person turned me on to the Asics 2090's: LOVE THEM. I have narrow feet and they fit well- they are also great for my high arches. Now the New Balance feel unsupportive by comparison.
Ta2d Fri, February 11th, 2005, 06:41 PM ta2d, how do you like your shox?

I like the shox alot. Very comfortable for me while doing 60 minute cardio sessions!
SWAT Sun, February 13th, 2005, 12:26 PM Was sticking with nikes for awhile, now im running in a pair of Asics Gel-Creed's, the number on the back of the tongue is TN327 if that means anything. I love these shoes, light, comfortable, better than anything nike ive worn...
JohnHand Wed, February 16th, 2005, 02:42 AM I never knew much about shoes so I went to a running speacialty store. They looked at and measured my feet and arches, watched me run and walk on a treadmill, and looked at my current shoes to see where I was wearing down the tread. I ended up with a pair of Mizuno Wave Riders and they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned.
paranouei Wed, February 16th, 2005, 05:34 AM I've got the Asics Gel Kayano (http://www.roadrunnersports.com/cgi-bin/rrs/rrs/ProductPg.jsp?baseProdKey=RRASC840&catOID=-8890&BV_SessionID=@@@@1778363421.1108545610@@@@&BV_EngineID=jaddckdjlkmmbekgcgecfeedgg.0), at first they were very tight for me, but in a week they adapted to my feet, and felt great. Anyway next time I'll try Mizuno they seem to be very good.

zkat Sat, February 19th, 2005, 09:53 AM http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_1/a-running-shoe-guide-for-.shtml
This is a good 4 part article on how to choose running shoes. :tucool:
CHUCKLES25 Sat, February 19th, 2005, 12:49 PM I have a high arch and I underpronate. I agree with JohnHand - I LOVE my Mizuno Wave Riders
In this month's Runners World there is a review of the new spring running shoes...check it out, there is a thorough discussion of weight (yours and the shoe's), pronation, arch support, terrain, etc.
sox311 Wed, February 23rd, 2005, 03:52 PM Just bought these bad boys for 40 dollars.... Heck of a deal, and that makes 3 new pairs of running/athletic shoes ins 2005 alone.... Hmm, this is becoming an unhealthy addiction!!!
NIKE SHOX NZ OLYMPIC RUNNERS size 11.5
They may be sort of gaudy looking, but they are comfy as can be. It is a sock like fit, very snug.
jtchen22 Thu, March 3rd, 2005, 01:38 PM i can't believe you guys just have one pair of running shoes ;p just kidding!
as a runner, i have 6 pairs of running shoes i alternate with everyday.
but honestly, i'm not even going to list them because it's more for MY foot type and walking stance, etc.
if i were you, i'd go to a running/walk shop, talk to a trained sales rep, and have them examine your walk w/o socks/shoes and step in the mold to determine what shoes best fit your needs.
it's only then can u truely determine what kind of shoes you need. but that's just for me.
they don't seem to need special shoes in kenya!!!!
He-Man Wed, March 9th, 2005, 10:34 AM I wear ADIDAS ClimaCool, reasonably priced (i got them in the sale!)
Just a comment on Nike Shox...Dont get me worng as I own a pair myself, but I was once told when I worked @ Footlocker UK, that Shox are probably the worst trainer to wair for cardio activities due to the "shox" system, it seems to have long term affects on the knees (in terms of injuries)...my thoughts anyway!
sox311 Wed, March 9th, 2005, 03:48 PM That is interesting He-Man.
I really don't like to wear my Shox while doing Cardio.
They are wider than my Asics or my other Nikes(diffuse) so they don't fit in perfectly with the way I run on my Eliptical machine every morning.
I usually just wear them when I am lifting or out and about I have designated the Asics and Diffuses for running.
yogro Thu, March 10th, 2005, 11:12 AM i had problems on the elliptical with getting numb feet (check out the thread on that), in an effort to change that i bought the Asics Gel Kayano XI, they are brand new just released shoe. although very unlike me i spent a crazy, rediculous $250AUD ($195USD) on them...but as luck has it i never used them yet because the day i got them i busted my back jet boating and havnt been able to run or go to the gym at all yet...http://www.asics.com.au/ ...my pair before these are Nike Air Max which served me very well jsut now are struggling a bit with the amount of wear they are getting, but they will still be there as back up...
EDIT: just found online now a sport store that sells then for $229AUD and i get 5% off with my gym membership so ill be return the other ones and buying them here...

AndrewB Sun, March 13th, 2005, 03:09 PM I would also recommend visiting a specialty running shop in your area and having your feet and stride properly measured. Each running shoe is designed to have certain features and to support people's feet differently. In addition to proper fit (many people dont know what correct fit really means) you need to how much support you need, and whether you have a tendancy to overpronate, supinate, or have neutral stride.
This is the only way to really find the shoe that fits you best. Having the proper shoe can make all the difference when it comes to comfort, performance and preventing injury.
Runner's world has some good articles explaining all of this and links to running shops in your area.
