Guys can you tell me which one of the statements below is better.

1. Go on the rowing machine and take a nice steady pace for 10 mins and go around 2000m, my rate rate is between 70% for the whole 10 mins.

2. Go on the rowing machine and instead of going against time set it to distance and put in 2000 m and go like hell till i reach it, i estamte my heart rate to go up to 85% to 90%.

which do you think is the better way of doing it?

Option 2 will do you better, if you're only doing a short cardio session. Shoot for about 15 minutes of that, no more than 25 minutes.

Option 1 won't have nearly enough time with only 10 minutes... you won't be doing it long enough to effectively get burning fat. You'll need to row at 70% MHR for at least 45 minutes to have an effective cardio workout.

my cardio work out are around 50 minutes long, during the 50 minutes my heart rate never drops below 70%, for 15 mins of the session (on the stair climber) my heart rate goes between 80% and 90%.

Depends on your goals. I use 2000m as a guide to my own performance, and as a warmup. I effectively 'race' myself each day (you can actually race yourself if you are using a C2 model D), and strive to be just thet little bit quicker each time. If you are using an erg for your cardio exclusively, then 2000m isn't far enough. However, if it is just a segment of a larger cardio plan, then probably your second option is better. Use it as an interval. Either that, or do interval training on the erg.

Plenty of rowing ideas and schedules here.
