Although rare in normal individuals, it can sometimes cause hyponatremia.

Quick summary: drinking too much water can overwhelm the body's normal regulatory mechanisms and dilute the electrolytes in your blood causing problems. In normal, healthy individuals, this is most likely to occur during prolonged exercise by replacing fluid with just water instead of a water/electrolyte drink. For hyponatremia to occur under normal conditions (non exercise), you would really have to drink enormous amounts of water in a short period of time.

For a healthy average individual, the amount your kidneys can cope with in a day is somewhere around 25 litres.
You'd have to be going some to get to that much.

For disease states (left heart failure in particular) 800ml of water can be the upper limit set for daily fluids.

Isn't hyponatremia a more common cause of marathon runner deaths than dehydration itself? maybe OD'ing on water is easier than drying out. BEWARE!

Hmmm interesting question - never heard of any of this!

I myself am on week 5 of my healthy lifestyle changes, and something WEIRD has happened to me! When I wake up in the morning, the very first thing I think of is a tall glass of ice water! I am finding myself toting water by my side everywhere I go!

I had a boss once that constantly had a huge jug thing of water with her and she would be filling it up and drinking it all day long.

So I would think that what you're drinking is okay. Especially if you're not feeling badly or noticing any fatigue or anything. Interesting topic! :)

Would worry about it, anyone should be able to drink 1.5 gallons and never be a problem. I think a gallon a day is a good goal, while cutting. Try to get your water drinking in by 7-8 PM for a good night's sleep without getting up.

Last fall, I was averaging about 160oz water / day (1.25 gallons).
I was running to the bathroom to pee very frequently; the real problem, however, was that I was getting up 3-4 times / night to pee.
Obviously, this was not allowing me to get quality sleep, which in turn made me tired, which in turn affected my motivation and workouts. Over a period of a couple months, I became absolutely exhausted.

So, in that sense, yes I think you can consume too much water.

Now I'm taking in about 80-100oz / day and don't seem to be having any problems.

*Edited to add: these amounts include water consumed in food, as calculated by DietPower.

Just a reminder that a lot of your water intake a day will come from food. Some people get as much if not more than 20% to 30% of their water from food sources like fruits and vegetables. While water is needed to flush toxins from the body, excessive water consumption can also flush the body of vital minerals which is counterproductive when trying to stay healthy. With everything there is balance and moderation and water is no exception. My point is, if you are getting up to go to the restroom every 20 minutes and you don't have bladder issues, or diabetes then you are probably drinking too much water. With that being said, hyponatremia is very rare, but is possible. Be sensible.
