[wh0areume vs Lucky13MN for now]

My goal is to wake up every morning and go running outside for 5 miles, 6 days a week, until March 1st hits. I haven’t had motivation to wake up for this lately, so hopefully this challenge will make me do it.

So for me, starting tues 1/25 going until tues 3/1 - there are 31 cardio sessions. Every day I will post to this challenge, and say.. "1/1" or "2/3" and maybe say something else too. Who ever has a greater % at the end of March 1 will... win a dollar from the other person? hah. something like that anyway.

Lucky13MN plans to get a treadmill this weekend, and he will start from then doing cardio tues/thurs of every week.

Hopefully I can get my bf% down to 8% in the next few months so I can buy a weight setup like John Stone for my bulking. (cuz you know that looks good)

Jan - Sox won
Feb - Sox won
March - Sox won
April - Stecman won

I'm in. I'm not very scheduled becuse I have 2 kids and don't use an alarm to get up - I just want it bad enough that if I go to bed saying 'I want to wake up at 5:30-6am', I tend to. If I wake up before 6:15 I always get on the treadmil (or go out riding in the summer).

I'm probably good through Feb as well..

Check-in tomorrow morning with your 5 mile time and I'll post my distance and time!

Goodluck!

Oh, and I'll send you a buck if you make more than 20 out of 31! :tu:

I'm in!!

I do cardio on Monday, Wednesday, & Fridays. That makes 15 days until March 1st for me. Just to let you know, I haven't missed a day since I started on the 3rd of January. Don't plan to now, either. Better bring your A-Game! :tu:

I am in.

I have a whacked out schedule right now, so I am not sure how many days I have available to do it from now until March 1st. But if I would have started today I would be 0/1, I hit my snooze at 6AM and I guess I turned it off because I ended up being 20 minutes late for work.

I try to do morning cardio on days that I have not lifted the night before. Will not be lifting tonight, I have a city rec hoops game. So tomorrow will be 1/1. Sure better be.

I will look at my schedule and try to figure how many days I can put it into my schedule.

I would like to get in on this also.
I will be following wh0areume’s schedule for 31 cardio sessions until 3/1. I will be hitting the treadmill in the mornings for 5 miles. Don’t know what me bf% is but I know it is too high. This will be great motivation!

Well, I only have to make sure I get up 2 days out of the week for my cardio, but man if I miss one morning it's really going to hurt my percentage!

LOL

Anyway, as of right now we're going to be picking up the treadmill on Saturday, so I should be ready to rock next week! :tucool:

Count me in as well. Aiming for 45 mins on the elliptical 5 mornings a week.

Just to keep myself more honest, I want to do Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri and Sat until March 1st.

Since you almost made an excuse, I'll chime in - my eldest got me up twice during the night, but I managed to wake up for 5 miles in 45 mins on the treadmill. The fact that I have to stay home this morning to look after him meant I had the extra time to do the 5 miles!

Well done ecollins, seeya tomorrow!

It was tough to get up after not being able to sleep after the late hoops game last night, but I made it happen. I have another game tonight at 7:45 PM, so tomorrow morning is another cardio morning.

When I do get up an do my cardio it makes a better start. I usually make it to work earlier than on non-cardio days.

Do you really want it bad enough?? If you don't, tell us now and be happy with your slightly flabby 12% BF. Else get up and start running!

I busted my balls to get up this morning to start this thing rolling when I probably should have taken a rest day.

First thing in the morning is best becuse you can nearly always find the time. During the day there are too many excuses at work for most people and at night you are probably tired.

Come, on. 20 days out of 31 for a buck! If you do 5 days/week for the next 4 weeks you will have made it with a whole week to spare.

How about doing situps, pushups, jumping jacks etc.. for 30-40 mins?

Can I play too?

I have a very hard time getting going in the a.m.

My goals are: cardio x 3 days (Tu,Th,Sa), weights x 3 days (M,W,F)

My problem is that I allow myself to sleep in THEN go to the gym (most days) THEN get to work late (flex schedule) but still have to put in my time THEN get home late from work THEN stay up late trying to get everything done in the evening which causes me to be tired in the a.m.

If I could just get up when I'm supposed to, everything would fall into place.

So, that puts me at 16 cardio sessions starting today (which I did this a.m.) and 15 weight sessions until 3/1.

Now if I can get my eating under control...... is there a challenge for that anywhere?

Yes, any1 can I guess... although the "challenge" itself kinda loses effectivness with the more people you add.

i guess we have like 20 people in this thing some how when it was originally going to be me vs. lucky.

Just set a goal for yourself... (you would probably have 16 cardio sessions before march 1. at the end who ever has the highest % sessions complete vs the goal they set wins.

ok, i just took an 1.5 hrs off of work, went home, and went for a 4 mile jog, took a shower, etc.

This is the first time i did any cardio excersize in about... 2 months almost! It was very difficult, i was very out of shape. I may have even over-did it because i had kind of a headach when i got home.

Since i didnt do it after an 8 hour fast - im counting this cardio session as 0.5 instead of 1.

0.5/1 - 50% for me.

its 26 degrees out, which is pretty warm for wisconsin. running should be fine. I also think im going to go running all 7 days of this week to catch up for yesterday's morning laziness.

Just wanted to add that in addition to my normal 30 minutes of cardio at the gym, when I got home a little bit ago, I immediately grabbed a sweatshirt, and headed outside to do some running of my own.

I've never been a big fan of running, anyway, so for me to go out and run 1 mile in 29 degree temperatures is really saying something. My time was 8:55, but some of that time was spent waiting for traffic at intersections. I would say that waiting accounted for approximately :30 to :45, seconds. So I still haven't broken 8:00, and I am still a long way from my goal of 6:00. But, hey, at least I got my butt out there, and as long as it stays around this temperature, I will be out there 3-4 times every week! :tu:

2/2,

Let me know if you want to trim down the amount of participants in this challange, I can bow out.

I could have been overdoing the cardio the past two weeks becasue of my inability to lift. I have done double duty on four of the last 7 days becasue of morning cardio and basketball games I have had the past four weeknights.

But I was able to get up at first crack today and hammer out 45 minutes on the eliptical. I am lucky being that I have an eliptical about 20 feet from where I sleep.

Tonight I will lift for the first time in 16 days, THANK GOD! I had an a-typical "mole" removed from my left shoulder and was under orders not to lift becasue it could tear out the stiches, it is a nasty scar already. So there will be no morning Cardio tomorrow needed.

I am going to try to get my measurments and bf% this weekend and then start a journal in the other section as well.

But help me out, am I correct to say that I shouldn't do AM cardio on a day that just the night before I lifted?

I lifted Thursday @ 4:30 PM. And for a few more weeks I will have to lift at 7:00 PM. Should I do AM Cardio following these days? I am under the impression that I shouldn't. But hey, if it won't be bad for my gains, I will be more than willing to do AM cardio.

Let me know what you think, I will read this tomorrow right when I wake up. I get to sleep in!!! I have to burn some vacation time I never took last year. Thanks

i think 8 hrs is plenty of time to spread cardio from lifting, viseversa. plus after a good night of sleep your body is more rested (duh) from the lifting than if you waited 8hrs during the day (for example).

So doing cardio the next morning is fine with those gaps.

That isn't true. I could flame out, who knows.... I don't think so, but I am sure I will want to sleep in more than once over the next month.

Yea, that blister is for sure from two long runs in two days. I just bought a new pair of Asics2900's(the year old ones, but they get cheaper when the new ones come out) about a month ago and they gave me a blister on of the first times I ran in them.

So, being that I just got new shoes, I really don't need another pair. But yesterday I couldn't pass up a new pair. I got a pair of Nike Air Diffuses at Dillards for 22 dollars!!! These are great shoes. And for 22 dollars I couldn't say no. They were regularly 65 or so, marked down to 35 then 30% off of that. They are very light, and are made of a mesh material so they breath better than any shoe I have ever worn.

And my goal is to get down to 8% as well. I have yet to get it checked, but I figure I am at 14% or so now. I am 5'11" 171 as of this morning. How far do you have to go until 8%?

5/5, I don't think my eliptical machine counts distance, I wish it did. That would be nice to have a little challenge to myself to go further each day.

And I sure am glad I only have to roll out of bed and walk to the machine instead of heading to the gym too.

Here is the kicker, I have had to use two days of vacation time last Friday and today, so I have had no problem waking up and doing it the past 4 days, I have been sleeping in.

Tomorrow it is back to having to wake up to an alarm, get my butt out of bed and hop on.

So tomorrow will be my 2nd tough day to get up and do it.

well.. it's been a few day's since I logged on and posted my progress, so here goes... I did get up on Friday (and weights & extra cardio in the evening) and Saturday for cardio, I missed Sunday all together and although I didn't get into the gym EARLY (5:30 am) I did get weights and cardio in this morning (just before noon). so I guess that makes me 5.5/7 (since I missed Sunday and got there late today) ;-)

oh and I finally got my body fat measured... I'm at 27%, 142 lbs (I'm 5' 2 1/2"). I want to get down to 18% body fat... so I better get my fat butt up tomorrow for my cardio ;-)~

Correct me if I'm wrong here...

But this IS morning cardio challenge, correct?

Meaning 1 point if you make it, 0 if you don't... since you did not get up in the morning as the challenge states.

It's not a cardio challenge, rather a challenge to make you want to get out of bed in the morning and do cardio.

With that said, I don't see any reason for half points... it's all or nothing because either you did it or you didn't, otherwise what's the motivation for getting out of bed?

Agreed?

wh0rume
January 31st, 2005, 05:09 PM
interesting yet obvious observation...

i think i am, too, guilty of the halfpoint crime... after re-computing my score (by removing 2 halfpoints) i'm at 3/5.

I guess i felt as if i was "special" because of the extreme distances i was running outside and how it'd have a greater effect on my fatloss whether i do it when i wake up, or do it a couple hours after breakfast - but this isn't a fatloss challenge. 3 divided by 5 is... 60%

BAH!

LOL, ok back on track :D

Just wanted to make sure I wasn't misunderstanding the 'Morning Cardio Challenge to get out of bed'.

wh0rume
January 31st, 2005, 05:29 PM
Actually - no where does it say the cardio has to be done right out of bed - just as long as it takes place in the morning. it was just IMPLIED that it was to be done out of bed.

but it is now a law of the challenge that the cardio session as to be done in a fasted state within 29 minutes after waking up, in the AM

:D

So I did it this morning --

5 miles outside in the cold - but i brought gloves this time
Took me 52 minutes.

2/2

I forgot to mention that yesterday when I went on my morning run, -- I always do it at the abandoned track about 5 min drive away from home. Anyways, 8-9 mins in I had to take a dump... bad.

So I weighed the options in my head. I could either go home and give up my workout -- even if I did that I wasn't sure I could make it. Or I could just go, Dumb and Dumber style.

What did I pick? The third option. I ran into the woods and took a nice, big, steamy(really!) dump. Then I finished my run, came home, took a shower.

Now that's dedication.

Funny what that reminded me of.

An ex-girlfriend told me what her brother got her for her birthday once.

It was a fanny pack with a walkman, water bottle and some TP in it.

I asked her, I don't know why, and she told me about that she had been out running before and gotten the same urge you had.

At that point, I broke up with her on the spot....

Well maybe not, but I wondered if we were at that point in the relationship where we could share that type of information, I guess we were.

I think it's funny how new couples that are ready or think they're ready for sex aren't even ready to 'pass gas' in front of each other.

I guess it makes sense cuz when ur trying to get sex, gas isnt helping the cause.

4/4 for me.

Got up at 5:30, and went to the gym and hit the pool. I had forgotten how hard it truly is to swim laps. While it may not provide optimal fat burning, it sure does do a lot to get your heart pumping, and the lungs going. When I got done with that, I came home, got the wife, and we headed back in (she likes to sleep longer than I do. hehe). Then I did 20 minutes on the stairmaster, and 15 minutes on the elliptical. Apparently the hardest I've worked since I started because I have never had sweat running off of me like I did earlier today.

I lifted instead of running today. my legs need a rest, and im gunna give it to em!
I'm concidering ducking out of this challenge, just because 6/7 days a week running 6 miles outside when i wake up is nearly impossible - or at least not healthy. if it was 4/7 days that'd be fine.
Running outside as compared to a treadmill seems to put more stress on the body - especially my legs, so i need to put a break day in there.

what do you guys think?

i dont know what happened - but it was strange.

I got outside, started running like i normally do. after about a half mile, my left hamstring started having sharp pain. i stopped, stretched for a little bit, started going again. at the time - it seemed to have helped it. got to about 2 miles into the run - OUCH! WTF! hamstring starts stinging, plus my calves feel like they'r swollen as if i just worked them out to failure! then i started thinking... OH YEA - i had just worked my calves earlier this morning. And i think i pulled my hamstring.

I then walked 2 miles back home. i shoudlnt have rushed it. i shouldv gone with my gut feel and let my leg muscles heal.

I'm no longer going to keep track of my cardio - i feel i don't need to. Running is a hobby again for me - that was my intention of creating this challenge. my 3/10/05 8% bf goal is still on schedule, but i feel that doing cardio in the morning isnt nessesary to reach the goal with running the distances i run.

My legs are like rocks, which are burning more calories at rest than im burning calories while running.

FOCK! MY LEG IS KILLING ME! :'(

9/9 45 mins.... Tough waking up after not being able to sleep last night becaue I had a hoops game at 9:00PM.

Hey Lucky, I haven't posted anything about this yet, but I just quit chewing 2 days ago....... So we are sort of in the same boat.... I was going to post this on my journal, but I didn't know if I wanted to becasue, who knows if I will be able to quit.

I had my last chew a little less than 48 hours ago, and had one before that about 18 hours earlier.

I started chewing in High School, baseball, junior year. I chewed all through college and the years since then, so about 9 years. 2 years ago I started chewing the bandits or pouches so it would be easier for me to quit when I did. So now I am going to do it for good! I said I was going to quit after this past baseball season, when the sox were done with the season and that worked out well for them. But I never really quit chewing, I slowed down, but I always had a can around. I am doing it cold turkey now, I haven't bought a can in a week.

How are you going to do it? I think cold turkey is the only way to go.

I'm going cold turkey, don't laugh but that's how I quit before and it lasted 2 years until I got a divorce and stress settled in.

well... I made it in today... however... I think I need to outline my challenge goals... doing fasted cardio 7 day's a week is just not reasonable for me... I make it to the gym twice a day during the week (Mon - Fri) so it's easy to get my fasted cardio in... but on the weekends I don't want to have to go to the gym twice a day so I usually have a small meal (lean protien only) and do my weight training first and then cardio... so my new goal is to just drag my lazy but out of bed for cardio during the week... which is what I need help with usually :p although it made it much easier with Bluestreak getting up at the same time this morning....

well.. on the old 7 day's a week way.. my score would now be 10/14

so i only did 2 miles (20 minutes - it was more like a walk than a run). i felt like i was going to die, almost as if i was out of shape! could have been multiple reasons:

a) hadnt ran since thursday night

b) saturday night i ate 1 package of domino's buffolo wings, and 1 package of cheese bread, and then went to bed. <---peer pressure. once your friends order that shit, you need to join in. I shouldv just stuck with the buffolo wings only.

c) i started a new diet yesterday, and theres not alot of carbs in it. its like.. 40f/ 20c/ 40p (%). so maybe my body is getting used to it, or maybe the lack of carbs in my system yields less energy for running. i dont know - im not a scientist people.

enough babble - im 14% bf today, 183 lbs. i have no clue how this happened. im very depressed. not really, because my cockyness overflows depression like an ocean on a campfire - but its time for my oatmeal. i can't believe im almost 30. life moves by so fast, yet if i could do it all over again, i wouldnt know what else to do, except maybe break up with that one chick before college instead of letting her fock me up inside 2 yrs ago, or maybe not let my mom give me moutain dew ever since the age of 8, or maybe not eat 5000 calories a day of pure SH1T for an entire summer and put on 50 lbs, etc.

Did my first day of fasted cardio today. Felt pretty good because I didnt work out on sunday so I really needed some cardio. My diet really needs some work, I've been eating waaay too much the past month, I'm at about 172 right now need to get down to 160 to be lean and mean.

5 miles in 38:30 I don't have a heart rate monitor but I'm guessing about 85% the whole time because thats about what I run at on a treadmill.

I really need to run longer but I can't run outside because of the weather and I hate running on treadmills and the track is really boring even with music.

12/12 50 mins on the eliptical . So I did cheat yesterday, but when I woke up this morning I weighed 173 today, one pound less than I did yesterday morning. So not even any water weight. Odd.

i can't believe im almost 30.

What? doesn't your info say you are 23? Your not even close...

I am 25 and I sure as hell won't say I am close to 30 yet. I am closer to 30 than I am to 20, but so what. These are the best years of our lives.

You like Larry David, you will love this guy. Aaron Karro is an observational comedian who writes a column twice a month and has written a book about college life, and has a book coming out about a twenty-something's life. http://aaronkaro.com/ Reading his column is like reading someone talking about my life.

Read all of his previouse articles and what not, there is the college stuff and the after college stuff. He and I are the same age, and I have been reading his stuff since I was in college and we both graduated the same year, and it is crazy how much it is like my life.

wh0rume
February 7th, 2005, 03:14 PM
cool. i read the first couple articals. theres alot of similarities to me in the fact that he's just random as hell. I'll probably end up reading all of them, just because im worried about what my life is going to be like after i graduate this month.

i.e. wake up, go running, go to work, come home, [.............], go to bed, repeat.

what im worried about is what im going to fill that gap with. i refuse to get married until im at LEAST 28. no sooner. so that leaves 5 years to find myself. i dont know, i guess i just wish life was longer. just twice as long. i don't have a problem with women except i think they'r just a waste of time for me. (relationships - not women specifically ;))

ok im rambling again. time for my second lunch. I think this topic is a good idea for an offtopic discussion.

Today was the toughest to get out of bed. I was laying there thinking how nice a whole extra hour would be of sleep.

Hey wh0areume, which model Polar did you get? I'm interested in buying a heart monitor and was looking at the Polars on-line but they have so many different models that do so many different things. Does the one you have have an alarm if you go over or under set heart rates?

wh0rume
February 10th, 2005, 11:43 AM
no, its verrrry basic. the watch has no buttons on it, it just shows either "OFF" or the heart rate. i just looked at their website, and everything on their product page is more advanced than the one i got - it must have been an older model. its exactly like this (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=1942948). no alarm, no nothing. but i must say - those other ones on polar's page are pretty neat. the only thing i wish it had was a clock so i can see how long iv been running.

anyway - went running this morning. i cant run at my usual pace because i've found it puts my hr at about 168, which is a little too high i think; so i slowed it down until my hr was at 155-160. only ran 4 miles because at the slower pace 4 miles took 45-50 minutes! i felt like i was walking.. but hey, nething to keep my hr good is all that matters.

i really suggest you guys go to the store and buy one of these hr monitors - just so you know what cardio pace is over doing it. you'd be surprised.

Yea, I would like to pick one up. Maybe in a few weeks, I have had some major bills pile up lately, hospital bills & car bills....... Sweet.

I gotta get my taxes in to get some extra cash!!!

So, I woke up 35 minutes late today.... I was going to say screw it and go back to sleep and wake up at 7:00 but I decided to get up and be about 15 minutes late to work and get my cardio in!! Not really a big deal, as long as I am in work by 8:30 then I am okay. I got to work by 8:10, I just hustled.

Actually - no where does it say the cardio has to be done right out of bed - just as long as it takes place in the morning. it was just IMPLIED that it was to be done out of bed.

but it is now a law of the challenge that the cardio session as to be done in a fasted state within 29 minutes after waking up, in the AM

not that it's a big deal or anything - but the whole purpose behind the challenge was to get myself the motivation to actually do it when i woke up. it was just so hard for me because when waking up, i would just want to go back to sleep right away, no matter how much motivation i'd have later on in the day.

Sorry the bike is such a pain in the nuts. Maybe when you get rid of it you can a treadmill or ski machine that doesn't require any sitting.

I'm starting to really enjoy running as well. I just don't know if I'd enjoy running with negative wind chills.

This thread, and others, have got me excited about HRMs now, also. I think I'll concentrate on my weight equipment needs first, but perhaps I can find someone willing to get me a HRM as a gift.

I don't see myself ever buying a peice of cardio equiptment, unless soemthing happens (car accident, cancer, etc) where i can't run and have to do a bike motion.

below zero windchills and temperatures only suck for the first 5 or 10 minutes. Then the body heats up nicely and you dont even notice. (assuming you have the propper attire)

Hey all...

It's been a while since I posted here so I figured it was time to say why now that I'm feeling a little better.

I had my appendix taken out... sucky deal that came on quickly. One day my fience' and I are looking at wedding bands and the next I'm in a hospital bed getting ready for surgery.

No cardio for me for a while, but you all give it an extra 30 seconds or a minute for me alright?

insane. so wait - are you claiming that you blacked out all of a sudden, and you woke up in the hospital bed?

the "apendex burst" is a mysterious event that i fear equally with death. how does it happen? most of all how do you KNOW it happened? (or maybe "about to burst" ) ????

After re-reading my post it did kind of sound that way, but no...

We got home and I began having stomach pains, real bad ones where I couldn't stand up straight. I started vomiting from the pain every 30 minutes to an hour and the pain gradually got worse throughout the night. The next morning she took me in to the hospital and that's when I found out.

I knew something was differerent, hard to explain really other than a burning pain in the midsection. It eventually becomes more prominent toward the right side where the appendix is located and pushing in that area caused additional pain. Coughing, sneezing, standing, etc all suck.

There have been some times I wish I would black out, but each day seems to get a little better with more movement and more upright walking as well. It's amazing how much you take for granted each day...

22/22. That is all but two days that I planned not to do AM cardio since we started this challenge.

I always said that there was no way "I" would be able to get up before work and do cardio.

But really, it is not tough after doing it for a short period of time.

And I'm going out drinking again tonight! And I will get up and do cardio tomorrow morning.

There I missed a day.... Not to upset though.....

Some friends crashed at my place last night and I had to drive them to their car at the bars in the morning, so we went and ate then.

First hang over? wow, your a late bloomer, if it weren't for alcohol, I wouldn't have to be cutting right now.

Blue feet? Did you get pimped by some friends or something? Pimped = shamed = marked on when you are passed out.

Usually when i drink i'm perfectly fine in the morning. Today was an exception.

The feet happened because i was walking around on some dirty ass floors. i had my socks on, so that explains how dirty it was.

Here is what i look like completly trashed.... I actually dont even remember who this girl was either. (the party had an 80s theme, which explains her hair. i dressed like don in miami vice with the white sport coat/pants, pink button up, etc)

Tell me about it? After how long what's it at? Mine takes about a half mile to crank up to 144, and then I have to gradually run slower to get keep my heart rate down.

For example: Here are some laps from my run (I run around a track so 1 lap = .25 miles)

Lap Avg HR Lap time
1 115 2:10
2 142 2:19
3 138 2:18
4 143 2:17
5 144 2:22

9 145 2:31
10 145 2:34

Last night was the first time I got drunk since I quit chewing. I thought that I would want a chew pretty bad... I didn't think of one all night.

Maybe you should take one of your workouts out on a track to really see what's going on. I'm sure your watch has a setting that you can push the button each quarter mile -- then we can figure out how fast your miles are.

And just go out and keep your heart rate at between 65 and 75% for one morning(in other words, 75%). Then post the results. It's hard to tell when you're just guessing the mileage.

Oh, and this week will be tough for me to post -- I've got a business trip Monday night - Thursday.. I'll post what I did when I get back.

Sounds tough. Obviously finals and graduation are more important than your cardio workout.

Getting that cardio done in the morning, may make you feel better as you study and take exams, though.

Good luck.
