For all the runners, at what outside temperature do you NOT go out running? Like how cold does it have to get before you refuse to go out or better yet does anyone know any data on how low the temp. is when it gets unhealthy to be out running?

Right now I just finished 4.3 miles in 13 degree weather, other than getting some extra leg protection i think i'd be fine next time.

thoughts?

I ran yesterday when it was 37 F out. My legs feel fine, and my upper body does fine with a sweatshirt, but I forgot my beanie and my ears were aching like crazy!

There was an article in Runner's World recently about cold running and its effects on the body. Basically as long as you wear the proper clothing, you should be fine. Your lungs can handle most anything down to about zero degrees (F) without any adverse effects. Below that you should wear some sort of mouth covering to help warm the air.

There are some great materials out these days made especially for cold running and other sports. I'm an avid runner but admittedly I give it up during the winter because I dont have the right clothes. I plan on buying some new gear and hitting the trails sometime soon. I miss it too much.

where you talking about that article? if anything the first part is pretty funny. Now I realize how ridiculous the "freezing lung" theory is.

Coldest I've ever been on a run was in great lakes during the winter. We had just jumped in the 30-40 degree lake rolled in the sand and then ran 5 miles in shorts and a t-shirt. Stupid yes, painful yes, why I did it I still don't know. Oh btw it was about 30-40 outside to :).

My father runs everyday at 4:00 AM no matter what the weather is like. (He even has a pair of shoes with screws put into soles so that he can run on ice.) He bundles up. Makes sure to cover his ears, and if it's *really* cold, he'll put Vaseline on his face to avoid windburn. I don't think there is a temperature that keeps him inside.

Now that is hardcore. He has my respect.

If there is snow/ice on the ground, I refuse to run outside and retreat to the tredmill at the gym. I trip over my feet at the best of times, ice just makes running that much more difficult.
