For the past 12 weeks I have been following this split: http://www.exrx.net/Workouts/Workout4PPTS.html

On certain days there are exercises that are repeated. Like on chest day they have you doing 2 sets of bench press and 1 or 2 sets of incline bench. Leg day has you doing 2 or 3 sets of quads and 2 or 3 sets of hams.

Am I understanding this correctly? I've been doing 3x8 then 3x8 again. Do they mean do 1x8 then another 1x8 and another 1x8?

The more I've been reading the more inclined I am to believe that the way I've been doing it isn't necessarily the most efficient since I want to lift heavy and lift to failure. I think I have a tendancy to save myself a bit for the next set, so I'm wondering if I should convert to heavier weights and follow the plan as if it were a 1x8 1x8 1x8.

Hopefully this makes sense ...
