View Full Version : Eating Out?
BiT February 16th, 2004, 10:57 AM How bad is eating out, even if you watch what you eat?
For example on Sunday, I had a fried halibut, greek salad, and some veggies. It seems pretty healthy but I kept on feeling guilty due to eating a sushi cheat meal on Friday.
Are there any safe bets with eating out?
As well, how healthy is Sashimi? I figure raw fish should be pretty good for you no?
Razor February 16th, 2004, 11:08 AM It all depends on where you go, what you get and how it's prepared. Eating out can be good and it can be bad. Look at what you're having, ask how it's prepared and go from there. I can't say much about how healthy raw fish is. I've had sushi plenty of times, but I've never looked at the nutritional info. It's never made me fat, though. I think it's alright.
brownguy February 16th, 2004, 11:41 AM It would depend on what you eat. I imagine the fried halibut would have some "bad" fats and quite a few carbs, and the greek salad might be heavy on the oils if you had a lot of dressing.
Sashimi, if prepared properly, is great. The only thing with sushi is the white rice it's served on.
Mahdimael February 16th, 2004, 12:33 PM Whenever I eat out, I always think "sodium". No matter what you get, it always seems to contain a ton of salt. Apart from that, you can certainly get good meals when you eat out- almost every place has a salad of some sort, if nothing else fits the bill

There's nothing really wrong with it, say once a week...as long as you're playing fair. My wife and I will go out once a week to a restaurant, but I don't go 'all out' for my cheat meal. They still have plenty of items on the menu that aren't too detrimental to your overall nutrition plan, so long as you don't make it a habit.
As far as I'm concerened, going out is for cheat meals only.

Anything I eat that I don't have nutritional information for is a cheat. It could be a cracker out of bag w/o info -- that's a cheat.
So eating out at a place that doesn't publish nutritional information I would consider a cheat. They only difference being sashimi. Since it's just fish (for the most part) you can look up the information on line. And how big of a variation is there in sushi rice? Just take a stab at it and find the information online.
Still, I'd consider it a cheat and move on.
BiT February 16th, 2004, 03:33 PM That's true... Hmm.. guess I'll look up the nutritional value of sashimi as it seems like that's the only thing I'll be eating when I'm out for a while
