View Full Version : Protein Needs?
richsuplita January 13th, 2005, 04:27 PM Hey folks! I'm new to this, so forgive me if this was a recent topic of discussion.
I'm doing a derivitive of the Max-OT program and am trying to keep my bodyfat steady (around 13%) while bringing up my bodyweight from current (202 lbs) to around 215.
I'm taking creatine and am using All the Whey as a supplement twice a day.
Here's my question: According to the Max-OT program, I should be consuming something like 350 to 400 grams of protein per day. Do I really need that much to make gains in lean muscle mass? I've done some supplemental reading, and the research (the stuff I've read at least) seems to indicate that consuming more than 1.4 grams per kilo bodyweight per day does not help athletes doing heavy resistance training to gain muscle mass. The 1.4 grams/kilo seems to be the plateau.
1.4 grams per kilo translates into something like 150 grams per day for me--much easier to acquire!
What have your personal experiences been? Personally, if the protein beyond 150 grams per day is not helping me, I would rather those calories come from (mostly) complex carbohydrates.
Thanks for any input/suggestions you all have!
txitalian January 13th, 2005, 04:42 PM 400g is way too much in my opinion. I personally have had the best results hitting around 1g per lb of body weight.

I come up with a little less than 130g/202 lbs.
Anyway, I think the 130-150g/day is much more reasonable than 400-500, ouch!

People that eat more than 1.4g/kg protein/day do so either becuase of a misguided belief or for some other reason. So, for instance, although I prefer to take in more like 3 g/kg, I would totally agree that you do not need this much to gain muscle so if you'd rather eat the rest in carbs, go for it!
warriorfiend January 14th, 2005, 06:54 PM I've been doing Max OT myself and tried to follow recommeneded eating up to 400 grams of protein. Just couldn't do it, for my body weight of 255, I'm staying between 250-300 grams per day. I just try to spread that protein intake between 6 meals. so no more than 50 grams per meal. Any more and I don't feel right. I'm also taking in 150-200 grams of Carbs and about 40-60 grams of Fat.
I'm having good results, losing weight and gaining muscle. I'm increasing the body parts I want and decreasing those hip and waist measurements. So I'm taking in between 2000-2500 Calories per day with a 55% Protein/35% Carbs/10% Fat split. This is pretty close to Max-OT without all the protein.
I have found that a Whey Protein Isolate that gives 50G Protein to 16 oz of water. This has helped get the protein without eating so much food.
warriorfiend January 14th, 2005, 06:57 PM Just an added note. If I was to do the 2grams per lb, I would be sitting at 510G of Protein (WAY TO MUCH!!!! :eat: ) but I am trying to get my weight down to 200-210lbs.

Natures Best Pefect Zero Carb ISOPURE
200 Calories
0g fat
0g Carb
50g protein
two coops with 12 oz water. I've also tried it with Milk. It came in a 3lb container. Lots of flavors.

I usually use ISOPURE in morning when I can blend with frozen fruit or banana/pineapple to give a little more flavor. I haven't tried their Chocolate or any other flavor than Vanilla. I also take AST VP2 Whey Protein Isolate. two servings give me 48 G Carbs. Tastes better than ISOPURE.
RM. Andersson January 15th, 2005, 05:22 AM I´m 200 LBS(10-11% BF) and I eat 100-150g protein/day with 3000 calories/day. I dont think there is any reason to eat 200-300 g protein/day like some people say I should. I need to eat more carbs instead to get more energy so that I can train harder and lift heavier weights.
I think it´s mostley companies that sell protein drinks that tell people they must eat that much protein.
Because if you dont have enough energy to do serious training and perform your best progress will be slow and you will not build much muscle.
Regards!

Excellent job on the weight loss. I used to only eat about 100-150G of protein in my diet while weight lifting. No other supplements. I read an article that said to increase protein to 1 - 1.5 times your body weight with at least 50-70% of protein coming from Whey. When I did my workouts were alot better, I increased my size and amount of weight very quickly. I still wasn't adding other supplements. My training partner and I were pretty even in size and strength, but when I increased protein and he didn't I was quickly leaving him behind. I did this for 4 weeks before he decided to increase his protein like I did, he quickly started increasing his strength as well.
I've never had a problem with eating carbs, I usually have more of a problem reducing them, mostly by cutting out sugar and soda's. I'm sure everyone is different and has different results for how much protein, but for me I know it helped alot. Currently, I never have any problems with energy, I hit muscle failure well before energy has left. I usually have more than enough energy to do a very good 30-45 min cardio after 45 mins of weight lifting.
aaaaaa1 January 16th, 2005, 06:13 AM 200 Calories
0g fat
0g Carb
50g protein
50g protein X 4 = 200 Calories,
which means it's 100% protein. Sounds like too good to be true, or is it?
