View Full Version : Snacking Throughout The Day?
tinman1412 January 13th, 2005, 12:11 PM Hi,
I snack throughout the day, like every hour or so at work. I owuld munch on peanuts or beef jerky. Is this counter productive?. I know you're supposed to have small meals throughout the day every 2-3 hours. Please shed light on this.
Thanks,
Lucky13MN January 13th, 2005, 12:14 PM The snacks you're having, though very tasty and a couple of my favorites, aren't the best to be snacking on.
Try veggies or fruit instead?
I love beef jerky... how bad IS beef jerky for you if you make it yourself?

If you are lucky, you are using the small bag of nuts, that is 150 calories of which 110 come from fat. If you got them out of a can or bowl, it is no telling how many calories you take in.
You said you snack every hour, I hope not. But lets say you ate four packs of peanuts that is 600 calories, 440 from fat. I will guess you need to eat 2400 calories, you are eating 25% of your total needs from four tiny bags of peanuts! What does that sound like to you?
I leave it to you to do the workup on jerky. After that, see if you are ready to change habits.
BTW: do you have a question on weight training for this forum?
tinman1412 January 13th, 2005, 12:54 PM The peanuts are 160 calories from fat 110. I guess I'm lucky. This is related to my bulking program, b/c I have to eat quite a bit. It's hard to get all those 4000 calories from my meals, so I'm getting some of that from peanuts. I thought peanuts have the good fats?. Also, I noticed that John ate a bag of beef jerky once a day for his source of protein. At the end of the day, I know what I need to consume as a whole, it's more of the timing that I'm asking about. Sorry for the confusion.
Novabound08 January 13th, 2005, 01:47 PM Could anyone list some of their favorite snacking foods?
Lucky13MN January 13th, 2005, 01:53 PM Celery with fat free Ranch dressing
Yogurt with grape nuts
Hmmm, that's all the farther I've ventured so far since I don't know what half the other stuff is some people talk about.

I didn't think anyone, anywhere was bulking. :)
I still don't think I would use either for a snack, just me. I might take 3 low carb shakes in cans to put in frig. 20 gms of protein for 170 calories. roast some walnuts in butter, put them in 3-4 sandwich bags about 1/2 cup for each. I think we might have taken care of 1200 of those 4000. :gl:
NEdge January 13th, 2005, 07:44 PM I wouldn't do this either - BUT as long as you are having good protein sources and carbs every 2-3 hours as well, and it's within the nutrient profile, and you are getting other fats, I don't see the problem.
The thing I would have against this is eating too much of the same thing over many weeks. Nuts are OK, but they are certainly not the best source of fats. Make sure you get enought omega-3s to ballance all the omega-6's you're eating.
The thing about fats is there are a lot of different types, with different functions and nuts tend to have very specific types, so you could be missing out on the others if you are not also eating flax, fish, olive oil etc..
kmfisher January 14th, 2005, 10:55 AM I eat unsalted peanuts and almonds as a snack. They are factored into the fat of my diet. Both are mostly good fats.
I also eat jerky occaisonally. It's pretty healthy, and the nutrition stats aren't bad (its mostly protein). Too bad the price is high. It is also factored into my diet.
I have no problem with snacking. You need to realize how big your snacks are. Eating 10 times a day is basically snacking 10 times a day. Snacking is simply very small meals.
Also, be careful with fat free dressings. They are often filled with crap to counter act the fat. Often times the fat is good fats that they cut out. If you are going to use dressing, olive oil based dressings (Italian) are better for you because of the good fats. Stay away from all the sugars (HFCS, etc), and trans-fat in some dressing.
