I haven't done lunges before but people keep telling me i should do them. Anyone have any success with them/any problems?
Anyone know how many reps/sets you should for them.
Anyone know how they compare to squats.

I believe they are more for hamstrings than quads. My opinion is that they do not even compare to squats. As a matter of fact I don't really think anything compares to squats. :)
Lunges are probably a decent exercise though I don't use them personally. For upper legs I only do squats, leg presses, and straight-leg deadlifts.

I used to do 500 yards of lunges in 100 yard sets every few weeks or so a while back.
My legs are already fairly big, but this toned them up quite well. The investment really paid off the effort when I went on a hike with some friends up a mountain and just steamed-rolled my way up the side. It felt great because usually a slow hiker, and snails used to beat me up hill.

I'll do lunges pre-contest instead of leg extentions. Otherwise I never do leg extentions anymore. Squats, front squats, and heavy leg presses.

I do both squats and walking lunges. I hate standing lunges but that is just personal preference :D .
I do 3 sets of 10 now. When I first introduced them I had read about doing them by time rather than sets, so I did about 4 minutes straight. Now I know people who have done them are all hitting the floor in hysterical laughter. I didn't have too much trouble until that last minute, and for about 4 days I walked like a penguin and much to my husband's amusement found trying to sit on the toliet a little...awkward. Thank god I did not do my original goal of 5 minutes or I would have been bedridden  . This was also at the beginning of my program so with better muscle mass to begin with they will probably not be such a shock.
3 sets of 8-10 should be fine.
