The real way to grow old is to pick your parents, well. the many, I have seen that made it over 85, were hard workers, never lazy and not much play. They didn't stress and knew how to smile. Each of them had parents who lived a long time if not taken by accident or war.

I don't buy it. The key to longevity is happiness, not laziness. And I've decided I'm going to live a long time.
:D :D :D

Our happiness depends on the habit of mind we cultivate. So practice happy thinking every day. Cultivate the merry heart, develop the happiness habit, and life will become a continual feast. ~Norman Vincent Peale

Agrees with rtestes -- seems even if you smoke, drink, and don't exercise, you will live long if your parents did.

The common thread amongst the 85+ aged people I know is stubbornness. My 89 year old granny is a cantankerous pain sometimes, and will always do things her own way; she still lives alone, and tidies up before her home-help comes. My wife's 94 year old granny still lives alone too, and still does things her way whether that's the easeist way or not.
Doing bad things to yourself will influence your lifespan, but you can't escape your genes (currently).

Andrew.

lol god i hope thats a joke.

There have been studies with rats showing reduced calorie, reduced exercise increases lifespan.

I think Jeremy commented recently on the reduced calorie part. There is definitely evidence that eating a quality low-calorie diet and not exercising much might be 'better' than what most of us are doing. But what fun is that?
