View Full Version : Neck Pain - anybody have some tips?
jayc January 9th, 2005, 04:29 PM Hi there,
I was on the inclined bench today and i felt a crackly feeling in my neck on my last set. It was like immediate pain. I know its not serious, because its just a muscle spasm. But it hurts like a bitch when i move my neck around. I've taken some pain killers, and its not doing too much. I know if i go to the doctor, he will just give me some stronger painkillers. Anyone got any idea's on how to help ease the pain for tempory relief until the pain goes down over the next couple days??
Thanks

For a number of years, I begin to have a sore neck that sometimes became very strong. about three years ago, I fell off my roof on to the patio, I got an Xray and doctor said "you know you have a spur on your neck vertebate?". Well long story short, it wasn't fall but genes or past. I have had steriod shots in my neck, on celebrex and vivox(still doing celebrex, lower dose). The doctors recommends no operation unless we run out of options.
Point: go to a doctor and find out what problem is or isn't. They cost money but who else has the equiptment and info. It might be a sore muscle.
A generalization: most exercises are safer for neck if you look up some, get a bead on something above head level and hold it in exercise. Relax your jaw and face.

800 mg of ibuprofen 3 times a day for a total of no more than 2400mg in a 24 hour period. 800mg is 4 over-the-counter pills at a time.
2 pills is ok for minor aches and pains, but you need 3 or 4 to relieve inflammation. Muscle spasms involving the spine have an inflammatory component.
Try that. If you are still in pain after 3 days of that, see a doc for sure. Also use heat for 20 min at a time to relax the muscles, as often as you like. Hot bath, heating pad, hot water bottle, whatever. Wet heat tends to be more soothing.

Woah woah woah, 800mg of ibprofen is WAY to much to take, especially 3 times a day! There won't be enough cytrochrome p450 to metabolize it, and it will stay as a hepatotoxin and damage your liver. At MOST, I'd suggest 600mg at a time; and that is if you are a bigger person. Also make sure to drink an entire glass of water with each dose.

Read directions:
Ibuprofen comes as a tablet and liquid to take by mouth. It usually is taken three or four times a day for arthritis or every 4-6 hours as needed for pain. Follow the directions on the package or prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take ibuprofen exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than directed by the package label or prescribed by your doctor. If you think that you need more medication to relieve your symptoms, call your doctor.
If you obtained ibuprofen without a prescription, do not take it for more than 3 days for fever or 10 days for pain without talking to a doctor.
If you are taking ibuprofen for pain and the painful area becomes red or swollen, call your doctor.
What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking ibuprofen,
tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to ibuprofen, aspirin or other medications for pain or arthritis, or any other drugs
tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially anticoagulants ('blood thinners') such as warfarin (Coumadin), aspirin, atenolol (Tenormin), carteolol (Cartrol), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), digoxin (Lanoxin), diuretics ('water pills'), labetalol (Normodyne, Trandate), lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid), medications for arthritis or diabetes, methotrexate, metoprolol (Lopressor), nadolol (Corgard), phenytoin (Dilantin), probenecid (Benemid), and vitamins. Do not take aspirin or acetaminophen when using ibuprofen unless directed to do so by your doctor.
tell your doctor if you have or have ever had liver, heart, or kidney disease; high blood pressure; any stomach problems; or any other gastrointestinal disease.
tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking ibuprofen, call your doctor.
if you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking ibuprofen.
you should know that this drug may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you.
if you drink 3 or more alcohol drinks every day, ask your doctor if you should take ibuprofen. You should not drink alcoholic beverages while taking ibuprofen.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Ibuprofen may cause an upset stomach. Take ibuprofen with food or milk.
What should I do if I forget a dose?
If your doctor prescribes ibuprofen on a regular basis, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Although side effects from ibuprofen are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
headache
dizziness
nervousness
upset stomach
stomach pain or cramps
vomiting
constipation
diarrhea
gas
If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
bloody vomit
bloody diarrhea or black, tarry stools
ringing in the ears
blurred vision
swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
skin rash
itching

So ask your doctor before taking more than directed. The stuff can be dangerous.
