View Full Version : Wow! I found *HEALTHY* bread!!! (5g protein even!)
akm3 January 4th, 2005, 10:06 AM After many years of trying to find a healthy bread, I think I may have got one.
I like in Spokane, and don't live near any giant supermarkets that cater to the frou-frou crowd, so a true "whole wheat" bread was the best I could do. It was much better then normal "wheat" bread, but still not something I would call diet food.
However, at Costco today I just bought a new bread that I truly think is diet-worthy: Healthy Way Sprouted Grain (Twenty Grain) bread.
It has lots of fiber, very low fat, and no cholesterol.
Here are the stats:
Calories 80
Calories from fat 5
Total Fat 0.5g
Sat. Fat 0
Cholesteral 0mg
Sodium 150mg
Total Carbohydrate 14g
Dietary Fiber 4g (!!!)
Sugars <1g
Protein 5g (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Net carbs of 10g (and these are complex carbs at that), 5g protein, only 80 Calories a slice.... DAYUM.
Tastes healthy, very "dense" but good flavor in my opinion. Kind of like Brown Rice has better flavor then white rice. This has better flavor then white bread. You can just 'taste' that it is more healthy. I really like it but I know some won't.
Anyway, just letting you know if you have a costo around to check the stuff out. It looks healthy to me.

smalltex January 4th, 2005, 10:35 AM I haven't tried that one--I'll look for it. I've also found another healthy bread that I think is pretty good. I find it at one of those large health food grocery stores.
French Meadow Bakery Men's Bread.
I know--goofy name but here's what is in a slice.

akm3 January 4th, 2005, 12:08 PM Those breads seem more 'low carby' but also seem healthy.
I have long desired to use my breads as a source of a healthy carbs (like oatmeal, for example) not as a way to eliminate carbs alltogether.
I'll have to try those too though, where do you get them?

smalltex January 4th, 2005, 12:19 PM I get my bread at Wild Oat's--not sure you have that up there in Wash.

Nature's Own makes a good bread. I buy their whole wheat bread, but haven't seen the wheat n' fiber model. I like that they don't add any HFCS which is rare for any bread.

Organically grown sprouted wheat berries, filtered water, organically grown grain mixture (consisting of millet, rye flakes, corn meal, rolled oats, barley flakes), pure honey, unsulphured molasses, lecithin, wheat gluten, sea salt, fresh yeast.

I wish places like Costco had it because it's around $5 a loaf at Whole Foods or the organic co-op. this Healthy Way Sprouted Grain sounds good so thanks for the Costco tip, akm.

Availability: Arizona, California (Southern), Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C., and more areas coming!
The company is based out of Tacoma, Washington, so maybe it will be in that area soon, if it isn't already.

Tell them to check calories 9+28+28 =65, or did I miss something?
featherz January 6th, 2005, 08:08 PM They didn't count the fiber. SO it's 20+28+9 = 57. Still a bit over but closer. :)
I always have ezekiel bread lately. Yummy!

this might not be available outside the upper-midwestern US. It's tasty and less dense than the French Meadow stuff. I went to Costco tonight but they didn't have the other Sprouted bread mentioned above (they were also out of fresh chicken breasts dammit).
