View Full Version : When to do HIIT?
Whoracle February 14th, 2004, 11:00 PM So I've read a lot about how you should do your cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, but I've read that you should eat something before doing HIIT, so I'm wondering do you do HIIT first thing in the morning or eat something first? Also, if you eat something first, about how much and how long do you wait until you do your HIIT if that is what's better? Maybe I'm missing it but I was looking at John's info on his site and didn't see when he was doing it.
Collegefour February 15th, 2004, 01:02 AM I do not eat prior to my HIIT workout in the morning, and I don't believe John did during his fat loss phase either. I did take his advice to cut back on the cardio to only 4 times a week vs. the 7 I was doing and that he did for his entire fat loss period.

karatetricker February 15th, 2004, 10:26 AM I do it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and then don't eat until 1 hour after.
TFXP-Zeke01 February 15th, 2004, 02:53 PM Unlike most people, I do all my weight training and cardio in the evening(5:00pm). I begin work at 6:30-7:00am, so that prevents me from morning workouts. Although, I'm not a morning person at all, so evenings have always been my choice. In relation to cardio, I really don't think 'time of doing the session' is all that important. I also don't believe in the "do cardio in the morning in a fasted state" that a lot support, but that's my opinion and quite a few others. As long as the body is in a caloric deficit and the cardio is done with intensity then fat will be burned whether it's in the morning or late in the evening.
ATXGFanatic February 15th, 2004, 03:42 PM I do my HIIT in the evening as well because i got school in the morning. I do HIIT, then lift or work on my abs.
marcus February 15th, 2004, 04:46 PM Depsite all the controversey I still do my HIIT and other cardio in the mornings on an empty stomach. If I did eat before I would definetely chuck it all up. :p

daveo February 16th, 2004, 01:08 AM Here's my schedule:
Monday evening: lifting
Tuesday evening: cardio
Wednesday evening: lifting
Thursday evening: cardio
Friday evening: lifting
Saturday morning: cardio before breakfast
Sunday morning: cardio before breakfast
Since my schedule kind of forces me to, 1/2 of my cardio is in the morning and half in the evening. Once school is out I'll do it all in the morning because of all the energy I get out of it! :jumping:
In the mean time, this seems to be working just fine.
I wouldn't sweat it too much if I were you :)

Heres a link Stanzo to give you some idea and there are threads about it all over the place.

brownguy February 16th, 2004, 11:32 AM I've experimented with cardio both ways. I found doing on an empty stomach works for me, but it's not the same for everyone. Try it one way for a couple of weeks, then the other for the next couple of weeks.
But there's no way I can do HIIT on an empty stomach without caffeine. I just can't seem to keep up the intensity unless I've had a strong cup of coffee or some Wake-Ups.
I think you the theory behind it about low glycogen levels means you either do it after fasting all night, or it doesn't matter, so if you eat, there's no best time to wait (but I could be wrong).
Stanzo February 16th, 2004, 12:25 PM Thanks Marcus and Jaz75 !
Thats been annoying me for ages !
