I love some diet sodas (Diet Vanilla Coke, Diet Dr. Pepper, Diet Sprite) and use them occasionally.
I have READ that some chemical in Diet Coke can stimulate more and stronger hunger pangs thus 'causing' people to cheat on their diets, and thus should be avoided for dieting. I don't know if this is bogus or not, but it hasn't happened to me.
*I* say go ahead, but others will say it is the devil. I honestly don't know the science either way.

i drink em...everynight i take a glass of DDP (diet Dr. Pepper) to bed with me, cause the carbonation is nice when i wake up mid-sleep to pee out some of that water i drink like a civ and my throat and mouth is all pasty from protien. water just doesnt cut it for me late night. its also nice to have some diet soda at parties, gatherings, etc. Someone ALWAYS brings at least one 2 litre of diet something to a party...and i'm usually the only one to drink it.
IMO, its just a way to kinda have soda, since lets face it, real soda IS the devil. I dont drink it like water, but with meals, at bedtime...why not? there's no sugar in it anyway..

An awesome alternative to your every day diet soda is Diet Rite. It has NO calories, NO caffeine and NO sodium. It's sweetened with Splenda, which I prefer over aspartame. I get the regular cola flavor in 2 liter bottles, and they also have cans of different flavors: tangerine, white grape, and raspberry. I've tried them all and they are so good! Tangerine is my favorite. Give it a try if you ever see it! :tu:

First of all GREAT job on cutting out the regular soda. So many empty calories and zero nutritional benefits. I cringe when I think that I used to drink SOOO much soda, and that stuff is used to clean off corroded car batterys. Disgusting.
Personally I drank Diet soda for a while. I did it for two reasons. Primarily for me it was a caffine delivery device. I have stopped drinking even diet sodas now, and for about a week I felt like absolute crap. I was withdrawing from the caffine. Just think of all the nasty chemicals in soda. Seriously, now it makes me sick to think about it. Picture how it is made in the factories, with the hazardous materials stickers everywhere (they DO have those all over the plants). If I have 5 diet sodas a week now I feel like I am cheating my body. I only drink them if *and only if* I am terribly tired and need some caffine. Other wise it is water 24/7.
The other reason I used to drink soda is because of the convenience. It is so easy to grab a can and toss it when you are done instead of taking a glass or cup (which might break) in your car. And in the car, the slots are perfectly suited to the cans. Cans get nice and really really cold. And then you have the marketers shouting at you from every which direction. I grew up watching tv assuming grabbing a Coke is the way which people hydrated themselvs. Seriously. For a few years I didn't drink more than two glasses of water a day... IF THAT. I just thought soda was the norm for everyone.
So that is my rant on soda. I say just drink water. :tu:

I don't have any research/studies to back this up but from my own personal experience it should be fine. I don't drink it every day but when I do it makes no difference as far as fat loss. Just make sure your not relying on soda 100% of the time. Drink plenty of water everyday and an occassional diet soda when you are craving a change. My boyfriend also drinks diet soda a few times a week. It hasn't held him back in the least bit either.
