View Full Version : Aww nuts...
Tanis6909 January 3rd, 2005, 04:46 PM I need some re-assurance here...nuts are good, right? Like cashews, peanuts...not fancy chocolate covered, sugar nuts, but real, Planter's cashews right out of the can...
they're good, arent they? the reason that I ask is that it just seems like such a convienent source of good fats, protien and calories that it just seems to be too good to be true.
I usually eat like 1-2 oz of cashews a day...at least i have been since i got that tub of em last week...someone please tell me this is ok...(even if it's not ok :p )
akm3 January 3rd, 2005, 04:55 PM Nuts *ARE* Healthy, but generally people recommend you avoid them while doing weight loss because they are so Calorically dense, it is very easy to eat too many Calories for weight loss when dealing with nuts.
A typ ical serving size of 1oz is almost impossible to 'stop' at when eating nuts.

Acliff January 3rd, 2005, 05:05 PM I have a serious addiction to cashew and macademia nuts.
I remember clearly a trip into london during which I managed to eat 500g (1.1 pounds!!!!) of cashew nuts....
I try and avoid nuts at the moment, as although the oils are good for me, it'll be yet another thing to test my restraint.
On my bulking phase however, I shall be consuming with gusto :)
Tanis6909 January 3rd, 2005, 05:05 PM right out of the can...yes, it can be hard to stop. but i have a little oz scale and i measure out 1 oz and take it with me along with a whey shake for my 3ish meal...this is especially nice on days where i cant get cardio done in the morning, cause it puts my last carb meal a good 5 hours before i hit the eliptical
so its ok to eat nuts like a gay sailor as long as i know how much i'm eating? thats quite awesome, if i do say so myself... :D
Volta January 3rd, 2005, 05:14 PM Cashews are the fattiest nut, you should watch out with them. One cup can contain roughly 62g of fat :(
Tanis6909 January 3rd, 2005, 05:27 PM im kind of a nut when it comes to portions...(pun very much intended) i'm got an oz scale from the post office the other day ($20 bucks...great for measuring chicken, nuts, anything you need to weigh really...its even digital) i always know what i'm eating, and almost always know the breakdown of P/F/C and cals...
so i guess a re-phrase to my questions would be: Can nuts be added on an almost daily basis to a healthy diet plan? sometimes i dont want a meal, and an oz of nutz and a shake feels more like a snack than a meal...plus its really easy to get them at pretty much any conveience store in case you need to eat on the run. also, my diet is just by nature low fat, and the fats in nuts are good, monounsaturated ones for the most part, so it serves as an excellent fat "supplement"
Tanis6909 January 3rd, 2005, 05:32 PM speaking of weighing chicken...does anyone else do this? i know your basic Wegmans 98% lean chicken breast is roughly 8oz...but i wanted to be a little more exact than roughly. anyone know if its better to weigh it before or after you cook it?
Ludvig78 January 3rd, 2005, 06:05 PM Hi!
Walnuts are best from health point of view. Loaded with omega 3. Hazel-nuts are very high on unstaturated fat. I tend to stay to these because of this.

Hort January 3rd, 2005, 06:44 PM I keep nuts as a source of good fats while cutting. Only one ounce a day usually, often mixed in with 1 cup cottage cheese (love this!). Usually walnuts or almonds, dry roasted or raw, no salt.
1oz almonds, by the way is about 21-22 almonds.

I recently read in Muscle&Fitness Hers that adding a few ounces of almonds into your snacking plan is very healthy. A study was done at Loma Linda University in California which evaluated the long-term impact of a diet supplemented with 1oz of almonds a day on men and women ranging in age from 25-70. After incorporating the almonds into their diets the subjects' intake of several important nutrients increased significantly, including monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat, dietary fiber, vegetable protein, vitamin E, magnesium and copper. :tu:
Also the participants' intake of trans fats, sodium, cholestorol and sugars decreased. The conclusion was that those who ate the almonds tended to naturally balance thier calorie intake.
Boxer-in-training January 15th, 2005, 08:23 PM The only nuts I really eat are whole almonds. And I only have 12 at a time- once a day. 12 almonds - 83 calories. As far as scales go, I have a small kitchen scale that measures oz. etc of food and I only paid $3.00 for it. They are cheap and you don't need a big fancy scale to do it for you. Just look in your local Walmart or something in the kitchen gadget aisle.
andreas January 15th, 2005, 09:29 PM How do dryroasted peanuts compare to say, almonds or walnuts? I have 25 g of dryroasted peanuts almost every day; not much, but enough to make me very happy.
